Default Hobby Master HA4503 McDonnell Douglas F-15D Eagle N897NA, NASA, 2011

just added this to my collection... not sure whether it's appropriate to include it since nobody has started a thread on this model and strictly speaking, it's not a military model.

I was really looking forward to this model but the off color blue camo just ruins it for me. I had contacted William on it but they had already popped it through production and it was too late to correct it.

Having seen this one in person and having been around this aircraft, a bit disappointing.

got any pics of the actual aircraft to share? it would be nice to see how the model should've looked like.

Wasn't that the scheme the aircraft was handed over in?

Colours don't look too far off to me.

I was just about to post that exact same pic. Yeah looks right to me.

Are you thinking of their earlier F-15Bs?

This is one of four aircraft handed over from Tyndall. They had an Air superiority Blue scheme originally but painted over with a grey scheme. The shots above are off in color, I cannot explain why. This hangar shot show the specific aircraft being painted with a layer of grey paint to cover the USAF liver scheme:

Re purposed NASA aircraft as of late have kept with the military grey schemes. Another example would be this Viking:

Sorry, I don't get to take pictures everywhere I go.

Colors seem quite close to the real deal. Definitely not as far off as I was expecting re earlier comments.

It's odd because the colors out in the open seem to be colored enhanced with the photos. You can see it as well in the colors of the buildings in the background, with the red striping. and carts. My guess is someone used the "Vivid" setting on the digital camera for color when taking those photos.
The hangar photo is the same exact aircraft getting the USAF painted over with the NASA livery scheme. Even the ladder pictured in the hangar is the same as the one shown in the outside photos. So I absolutely stand by my statement, the reference photos used are off and HM further blue tinted the model colors making it very off.

Totally agree. Judging by the comments, I thought the real thing would have this kind of scheme.

Just to note how far off this is, on the first photos above, the vector on that outside shot the vector on the back rudder is actually painted whitish grey.
The background makes it appear grey in color. Later it was painted black The bottom of the circular orbit changes colors in the reference photo above. The HM model missed that detailing, got the colors wrong there as well.
And again, the inside hangar shot shows many objects of differing colors to give you a idea of the tints on the aircraft.
Even with an enhanced outside picture, there are visual clues that the model's color scheme is off tint.

How far can a vivid color setting throw off a camera photo? Same aircraft:

I'm an air traffic controller, and my local air national guard unit here flew F-15s until last year. Having looked out at a ramp of F-15s daily, the color, even with the bluish tint to it, is accurate. It's all about how the light hits the aircraft/paint, it's not 'off'.

guess it's time for my eagle to spread its wings and have some fun in the sun this weekend. if i do find the time, i'll post pics of the model under different lighting conditions for some additional compare and contrast. we're talking about tropical sunlight, though (my photographs taken in europe seem to have cooler tones than the ones i take locally). anyway... until then, perhaps we'll just have to agree to disagree as to how accurate the colour (or color) rendition is.

Well, here, look at it this way. Same F-15, same day, same camera, same light, no manipulation of the image.

Looks pretty blue, right?

Now grey in the sun.

Appearance varies on the light, man.

I had talked to William and sent photos earlier. His response:

"We indeed try several times for the right color of the F-15. Our Japanese F-15J has the older scheme and the NASA is probably the new scheme.
We checked some photos and some seems deeper under the sun and some lighter (please see attached).
I think in the future we will tone down a bit on the bluish grey so as to achieve better realism.
I regret that it has been done so cannot make any changes by now.
Best regards,
William"

A bit blue on the tint for those who have been around up close to these aircraft, but if the hobbyist/collectors are happy with it, C'est La Vie.

No, the pics Jumper posted, the 84-017.

edit: actually, come to think of it, 79-0007, the NASA Eagle, is also a former Bitburger...

I've been looking for a jet from bitburg to add to the collection.

A cat with nine lives then, hey? So what's flying at Great Falls nowadays? I had a base tour there in 1995, I think they still flew F-16 ADFs back then. Amazing markings...

They converted to C-130Hs, full-up airlift wing although you can tell they still try to drive them like fighters. Fastest threshold landing speeds I've seen in Hercs...

They're still marked up nice

Wow, that Herc looks amazing! Not a fighter obviously, but I doubt you'll find nicer markings on a C-130.

Yeah they're a bit zippier than you'd expect a C-130 to be.

I learned to fly in the great lakes, good for IFR and gusty by the lakes. Tried to learn to pilot anything I could and admitting, as a bad habit, with the larger birds, come in faster than recommended. Most don't adjust quickly when adding power at the last moment and every 1 inch feels like 1 foot when you bounce some because you hit a good gusting headwind at final. So I can identify with those C-130 pilots coming in a bit hot.

Probably not that much faster over the threshold for those C-130s.

I have over 2,000 hours on Hercs in the RCAF, and believe me 155,000 pounds of momentum can be a hard thing to correct for if you're too fast.

On the other hand, Overhead Breaks to join the circuit at 250 Kts and then bleed off the speed with a 60 degrees of bank/ 2G turn (to join the downwind) leg was just plain fun!
