Diecasters - Consider Challenge Coins (metal) to display with your Models! Below is a Challenge Coin (both sides of the same coin) I obtain from the Marines booth at the F-35B static display at the 2014 Miramar Air Show recently.

The thought occurred to me that displaying squadron related challenge coins next to its associated aircraft model would be nice. Of course finding a coin for a squadron that has been disbanded would prove difficult if not impossible to find.

Below is a link to the history of the challenge coin as well as a link to an example google images page of assorted coins. By no means not at all, all of the coins that's available.

You may find a coin online or you may need to contact the PAO (Public Affairs Officer) of a particular Squadron through your search engine etc...in order to obtain the coin...of course these are NOT FREE...there are costs from approximately $10-30 USD not including shipping. You may want to buy two of the same coins only because both sides of a challenge coin are decorated and you might want to display both sides at the same time. Some online retails of coins will also sell small display stands for the coins...otherwise attempt to make one yourself. It's worth a try if your interested.

Cool idea! I've got a bunch in a box from my AF days. Only a couple of mine make sense with models though.

I'd suggest little single display cases for the coins so they can be propped up along side the model; something like this:

The military ones are harmless enough and nice collectibles. The law enforcement ones smell of petty corruption, either real or implied.

Here is just one example of an online store out there selling challenge coins...you don't have to be in the military or "prove membership" to get one even directly from squadrons themselves.

I have been looking forward to getting the Falcon NASA T-38 model as well the Hobby Master NASA F-15 model. Actually, more keen on seeing the HM F-15 NASA model with a down the road release of a HM F-18 NASA bird. In the mean time, I have been putting together a collection of NASA challenge coins to display with the models.
These are coins from Dryden Research, Armstrong Research, the Apollo missions, space shuttle missions, Mars Curiosity mission and the new Orion/Constellation mission. Each coin contains flown metal from each craft highlighted and in the case of the Mars coin, metal from the prototype.

They melted a part/piece of an X-15.
The coins I have are made with metals from the X-1, X-15, X-31, X-16XL, Shuttle Enterprise, Shuttle Atlantis, SCA, The NASA B-52, LLRV, Apollo command module 17, Apollo 12 metal on the moon, the Mars Curiosity prototype and Constellation test bed launch vehicle. Some of the coins are available to the public, some are exclusive to people working with NASA programs. The next coin coming out is from a piece of the Apollo 11 command module.

Models and coins look fine together. I do have them on display with other stuff from the good old days with the AF..
