Default Northrop P-61 Black Widow

Hi guys,

I find that the Northrop P-61 Black Widow is such a nice aircraft of WWII and I would love to own diecast models of this plane in 1/72 scale but I believe that sadly there is none for the moment. Anyone else likes this airplane or/and would be interested in model of this plane ?

I believe there are many collectors out there that wouldn't mind one (or a few) in their collection, I for one would like one.

Model Power make one but it's in an odd scale like 1:120, hopefully the likes of Falcon Models or Oxford do one, they seem to pick up the oddies other manufacturers won't touch.

The widow is a nice a/c, but given its size (essentially that of a B-25), the complexity of its twin boom layout and the amount of cockpit glazing, it’s only something that Corgi or perhaps HM would attempt in 1:72.

Corgi is busy milking its B-25 and Lancaster molds for maximum profitability, while HM, still smarting from the relative lack of popularity of its A-26 line, is busy producing A-20s and F86s. So unless Unimax or perhaps Oxford, as previously mentioned, step up, don’t hold your breath.

Although the idea of doing a 1:72nd scale P-61 was "floated" a number of years ago, it was soon abandoned as the existing business model required a fair number of schemes for the manufacturer to make a profit and this plane really has only a few---all-black and OD. As for FOV or Oxford doing one, this is a slim bet. Oxford's seemingly large line of low quality WW2 replicas was actually funded by the Atlas Editions subscription series. Oxford handled the production via a Chinese factory supplier and must have kept the rights to re-release the same models under its own name ( with new schemes ), once the Atlas deal had run its course. Oxford has added a few new planes on its own initiative, but these, like Oxford, itself, are mainly UK oriented. FOV is another story and at the rate it is turning out new toolings----very, very slowly----we will have a long wait before it even considers something as risky as the P-61, which would appeal almost exclusively to US buyers.

Very cool IF they can hide the screw holes and not put 1000 rivets all over her

The rivets are my one big worry too. Along with unnecessary moving parts and their associated gaps.

Not something that fits into my collecting themes, but nice to see another plane type being made. The only problems for me is that it's got fixed down undercarriage (so I'm led to believe) and the price. Non signature one is $90!

And visible philips head screws. Don't forget those screws.

lol I could maybe forgive the rivets but not screw holes

Actually there should be interchangeable landing gears, I've seem up and down diagrams from AF1

Also why is there different artwork for each edition ? Blue and red ladies ? Is this accurate or a gimmic to show the difference between editions ?

apparently there were 2 different versions of the artwork used on the real plane at different times- not red & blue versions but WHITE & blue. the white one was the original, then they changed it to blue- the version known by most people. the 'red' version is the airfix model, which is incorrect.

Pre-pros up at Pete's. Looking better than I thought it would. It's riveted which was expected, but they seem fairly subdued in those images. I'll wait for more pictures, but at this stage I'd say it's probably a go for me.

Great pics on 17#. my opinion is, it will be better if the panel line could be sharper, now the sample looked like the level of Witty.
