Default Best P-51 Model

I'm wanting to get a P-51 model, there are many different out there I have found on Flying Mule, which one do you guys find is the best? I'd like to be able to switch gear configurations and lower/raise the flaps for landing configurations. I know there was one that was a Flying Mule exclusive a while back I wanted to get...but never got it.

Gemini is acknowledged as the best P-51B maker in 1:72. I can recommend "The Hun Hunter from Texas" and “Old Crow” (a Mule exclusive). The colors are much more subdued than the later P-51Ds by other makers, but attractive in their own right. For 1:48, Hobby Master rules.

If ever there is one available, aim for a P-51D 'Glamorous Glennis' model.

When was the last time they made that model?

Definitely.

The Gemini P-51B is great. The Dragon P-51D is just as good, but it is becoming very hard to find.

Dave used to have a good selection, but it's down to 2 Dragon versions now:

Mustang MK. IV No. 3 R.A.A.F. Sqn., 238th Fighter Bomber Wing 1:72 Dragon Models USA DM-DRW50052 - Aiken's Airplanes Store

P-51D Mustang USAAF "The Millie P" 1:72 Dragon Models USA DM-DRW50003 - Aiken's Airplanes Store

I got the P-51D Glamorous Glennis (extra one too), I was planning to sell it on ebay for around $50 + shipping.

EI made some wonderful B/C P51s in 1:48.

Be interesting to hear comparisons now HM has released the P51B.

I have the P-51 Glamorous Glen, but by Witty. It's a very nice model but lacking in extras (e.g. the pilot is not colored). Other than that though, I haven't found any differences between GJ and Witty, and Witty's are usually half the price.

I got a request to post some pictures of the Dragon Wings P-51 Glamorous Glen so here they are:

Although an old model, it's a good model.

I'm a longtime airliner model collector but I'm thinking about picking up my first military model: a P-51, of course. I'd prefer the larger 1:48 scale. Seems like Hobby Master is the best route here, no? Who has them for the cheapest? I see they also offer a "signature series." Having the pilot's autograph for an extra $25 seems pretty dang cool. Anyone here collect these? Flying Mule shows a "Boomerang Jr." up for pre-order, to be released in November. Any thoughts on this?

Sorry for all the questions, but I appreciate any replies on HM 1:48 Mustangs, and pics would be awesome!

You can see a full range of HM P-51D in 1:48 scale here:
1-48 Hobby Master Air Power Series Propeller Powered North American P-51 index page

the autograph would be cool if the livery is also good. Personally I favor the ones that didn't have the signature like Big Beautiful Doll HA7719, or Petie 2nd HA7711

Also, what is generally considered a "good livery" when it comes to P-51s? I'm assuming something with a natural metal finish and possibly with a famous pilot, such as Chuck Yeager's "Glamorous Glen III"?

That is basically your opinion, whatever fancy your taste is a good livery. For me, I like something that has the D-Day stripes like on the wings and fuselage. It looks badass, but HM hasn't made one with those stripes yet - and since I collect 1:72 scale only, I could only resort to Dragon Wings

Still such a great mold after all these years, makes you wonder why nobody else has stepped up on making a a quality 1/72 D model.

I've got this too, much better than the Corgi version in the same scheme.
Mine still hasn't made it out the box.
Thanks SKF for the superb photos.

What would you guys think the estimated cost of a used/displayed (but mint) Dragon Warbirds P-51D Mustang "Glamorous Glennis" would be these days? (The box is virtually perfect, I can't seem to spot any shelfwear on it)

Dragon did a very good P51D. I have this one as well. My only critique is the “forest green” colour on top of the cowl. Other than that, it holds its own very well after all these years. One of my fave 1:72 warbirds.

Thanks for the recommendations, checking and UFalcons. But does anyone have a ballpark figure of what Dragon Warbirds P-51D Mustang "Glamorous Glennis" should command on eBay these days?

IMO, that particular one should fetch between $55 - $65 in MIB condition. But, then again, for a model that is no longer available, the question is “how much is it worth to you?”.

There's also Corgi to consider, if they are going to release a new P-51 tooling it might be worth waiting to see how that turns out. Unless you're absolutely set on owning GG III as an immediate must have.

Isn't Corgi the only one making a P-51D in 1:72 now?

Everyone else went belly up or quit except for the maybe the cheap magazine subscription models?

Marushin does a P-51D as well, in 1:48. Not heard anyone who has experience of them though, but their A6M is supposed to be very, very nice.

And if you have money to burn there is always the GMP 1:35, which is reportedly pretty much the best you can get. But you're looking at over $200 for the least popular model, up to the 500-600 ballpark.

I believe they are as I seem to recall saying it would be a good opportunity for HM to do a 1/72 P-51D considering how ancient Corgi's mold was.

I think HM has pretty much covered the P-51D in 1/48 and also heard Aoshima's 1/48 Zero is very good quality.

What's the consensus on the new mold? Looks alright to me.

Sadly, everyone seems to go for the "same old, same old" stuff..... (Zzzzzzz !)

Always the same predictable scheme(s), like Yeager's 'Glam', or nice ol' Bud's "Old Crow"
(i.e, "no imagination").

ALSO, the 357th (boring, as it's ALWAYS portrayed), WASN'T the 'only' Mustang outfit in Suffolk.

About time someone "showed some love" for the BLUE-DIAMONDS ON RED COWLS 356TH F.G.
(from Martlesham Heath)

I bought THIS bird late last-year = Looks even nicer "in the flesh" too.....
