Question Which Manufacturers?

Hey guys.

I'm new to collecting model aircraft and so far only have a couple of airline models made my Hogan in my collection. I can see which manufacturers the members prefer when it comes to 1:200 airlines in the short time I've been a member of DAC

I'm wondering which manufacturers makes the better model over their competition when it comes to fighter planes. I'm interested in 1:72 scale for fighter planes and hoping to get an EA-6B, F16I and F-14D sometime soon.

Cheers!

The only EA-6B in diecast is this 1:100th scale model from Italeri:

Italeri 1 100 Aerei Da Combattimento 47 Aereo ea 6B Prowler | eBay

You knew it was just a matter of time, but alas, you have answered well Ace.

F-14D Century Wings, hands down the best... but the availability is limited. The VF-1 Wolfpack is still widely available, but other releases, including the new Vampires are nearly sold out. Expect to pay $150-$600 depending on the livery. Witty Wings and Dragon have some available for half the retail price of CW, but each has it's problems with accuracy.

The Hobby Master F-16I is just now getting to retailers depending on your location. It is superior to the Witty Wings version, but there is a low production run, and I assume it will be sold out quickly. Contact a retailer soon by phone to try to reserve one or you may miss it. The Witty version is not that bad, but there are minor inaccuracies that will drive purists nuts.

There is an EA-6B from Hogan, but at 1/200 scale. It is highly doubtful that one will be released any time soon in 1/72 despite customer requests. The Hogan model is excellent and comes in a variety of liveries.

CW makes a great A-6. It's the next best thing and very popular. There's only 2 liveries widely available at the moment, but they can be found on eBay and the occasional retailer due to the high production runs.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Ah yes. I've seen the Hogan EA-6B on their website but being 1:200 I may find it too small.

Thanks for the links, Skinner.

The best for me are century wings and hobby master. And I wouldn't say the worst but the least accurate and at the same time the cheapest one would be the altaya line.(although they make interesting fighters that you won't find from other manufacturers.) oh and falcon models, skymax and witty are pretty good as well and make fighters that weren't made by the top 2. Pretty much it all boils down to what particular aircraft you are looking for and who made them. Oh I forgot to mention other manufacturers like gaincorp and avic models from china. They make some fine models as well. Just in case for you are looking for warbirds..dragon and corgi could be your options and the latter is the best for bombers aswell.

Not necessarily.

I'm looking for which manufacturers the members prefer. In the case for 1:200 airliners I can see that the members here go for Gemini and Inflight for diecast, Hogan for plastic. I just don't want to end up with something that looks like it came off the shelf from a Toys R' Us.

I think Alfred said it well:

Let us know which aircraft you are interested in, and you will get better information on who makes the best model.

Century Wings and Hobby Master are probably the best in regards to any aircraft that they make imo, with some minor exceptions. The X-Plus/Air Commander F-4 is considered higher quality than HM's but at a higher price point. I think HM and Corgi shared their mold on a couple models including the MiG-21, so the lines can be fuzzy in some instances.

Century and HM models are no doubt the top 2 manufacturers quality-wise...but CW has too limited types and so expensive for an average collector...compared to HM which has a long list of aircraft available from WW 2 to ultra modern jets like the F-22 and still affordable. Corgi is also a good choice specially for WW 2 fighters and heavy bombers but also pricey...Witty is an alternative to some collectors...and also Falcon which makes beautiful models like the F-86D sabredog...etc

It all depends on the plane. HM's Kate, A-1, P-26 and Buffalo---to name only a few----are great but its Fury is flawed, its Stearman was based on a bad kit and stinks, its FW-190 is a fine tooling, ruined by bad mottling and other marking mistakes, etc. In like manner, Witty's Javelin is awful but its Zeros are the best. And so it goes.
