Default Canadian All Black Voodoo (EF-101B) - The Details

Hopefully the All Black Canadian EF-101B Voodoo #101067 (the Electric Jet) will be a future Hobby Master Subject.

Canada's 133rd and Last Voodoo (Photo taken April 4,1987 - Just 3 days before being retired and then returned to the U.S. for preservation).

However, this was a "one of a kind" very unique and heavily modified F-101B acquired from the USAF for the Electronic Warfare Training Role. There are all sorts of bumps and antennas on this thing that need to be pointed out if you want a fairly accurate replica.

The EF-101B was a conversion of a regular F-101B, incorporating the electronic jamming suite from an EB-57E Canberra. Only one aircraft was converted before the program was cancelled, and this sole example was leased to Canada as the Canadian Armed Forces 133rd and last Voodoo.

This photo shows #067 on delivery from the USAF at CFB Winnipeg ready for ECM work - but yet to painted black

Here are the differences that I can see so far:

1). There IS NOT an Infrared Seeker on top of the nose behind the radome. Instead there is some type of antenna that resembles the shape of the IR seeker but is much smaller in size. The first photo below shows #067 and the antenna in question. The second photo below shows a standard CF-101 with the Infrared Sensor.

Also note that the radome is not painted black entirely on Canadian Voodoos - there is a thin bare metal band between the radome and where it connects to the forward fuselage (this can be seen on both photos below).

2). Normally Canadian CF-101s did not have the air scoop on the lower port side of the nose - However, #067 actually had this scoop.
The air scoop is seen here just above the forward portion of the gear door on #067 when first delivered (before it was painted black).

3). The Black Canadian EF-101 was also the only Canadian Voodoo to have the STRIP FORMATION LIGHTS (although they appear not to be yellow - but white or light grey instead).

4). The Search light on the port side under the rear canopy is present on this aircraft. (Some photos seem to not show it but it appears to be just some weird reflection angle as it appears in other pictures.)

5). All the pictures I have seen show the Starboard external fuel tank carried only (see photo below). On a pylon mounted on the weapons bay door was an Electronic Jamming Pod that is shaped like a fuel tank but is much smaller (black with a red stripe on both sides).

6). There are no upper wing markings (see photo below)- However there are markings underneath the wings (CAF and 067). (see photo above)

7). The trim around the Canopy appears to be silver rather than the more usual yellow.

8). Aircraft was painted Gloss Black overall. Fuselage roundels were 24" CAF with the white removed. The last three numbers on the nose were 12" red figures, the word C A N A D A on the fuselage side and tail serial number are also red only, as was the flag on the tail. The rudder had four red stripes.

9). ECM Antenna Summary

This aircraft had a number of ECM antennas fitted:

One forward facing on the upper nose (Replacing the IR Sensor).

Two rear facing below the nose with a small blade antenna between.

Three rear facing behind the canopy (plus one small blade antenna for a total of four).

Two rear facing ones below the fuselage forward of the afterburners. (these are actually the Data Link Antennas that were present on all Canadian Voodoos, however although these appear in profile drawings of the"BLACK VOODOO" they are not evident in any photos seen so far).

Three small bi-directional pod antennas between the nose gear door and the weapons bay. The aircraft was often seen with an ECM Pod fitted to a pylon on the weapons bay door.

You seem to be the "Inside Man" with Hobby Master. Have they said anything positive on the subject?

Now if Falcon could make a 414 Sqn CT-133 from the same era that would be something. The two side by side would look great in any collectors display case.

I don't really have any "inside information".

I just wanted to let Hobby Master and collectors know that if they decide to manufacture a black Canadian Voodoo that there is a lot more to it than simply painting the existing tooling with a coat of black paint.

BTW, there is a pedestal mounted EF-101B (painted to represent #067) outside of CFB North Bay. However there are errors on it as well. Notably the lack of red rudder stripes.

I hear you there. The more accurate the better. Hopefully it's something that HM can do. It would certainly be a big hit for us RCAF/CAF/RCAF collectors.

On another note my father was one of the flight commanders with 414 SQN from 1980-1986. He mainly flew the CT-133 and CC-117 Falcon both fitted out for electronic warfare. So the Electric Voodoo would have been in service while he was a squadron member. Whether it was in his fight or not I don't know. Next time I see him I will ask him about the aircraft and see if he has any pictures lying around.

Cheers

Just picked up my BOB CF-18. Great model by the way. While I was there the owner mentioned that Hobby Master will be producing the Electric VooDoo to be released sometime 2016. Anyone else heard any rumors about this? A definite buy for me. Saw the actual aircraft in North Bay when my dad was flying with 414 Sqn. No he never flew it. Was flying the cc-117 falcon in the electronic warfare role.

If the rumor is true, it's a definite buy here as well. Certainly is a good looking scheme.

Just a rumour at this point.

I heard from William and Hobby Master is still deciding if there is enough market demand for this model. It will require specialized antennas as well as the ECM Pod to be tooled which only adds to the cost.

Hopefully it will eventually be given the go ahead - but for those seriously interested it wouldn't hurt to let Hobby Master know that you will purchase the model if offered.
