Default My Collection pics with new lens

Got me a new lens, CANON EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM

I am still in the process of searching for the sweet spot on the lens but the result is amazing.

Definitely sharper and the contrast is greater than my kit lens EF-S 18-200mm.

Some post processing were done, such as AWB and dust cleanup.

that certainly does look a lot beter! I need to replace my aging camera lens, it's far too blurry especially angle shots from nose to tail. What are your settings right now? Are you on AV model, ISO? F-stop...etc.

Setting for these shots I used:

Camera: Canon 60D
Mode: AV
Aperture: f/10 (for APS-C 9~13 is the best for sharpness IIRC)
ISO: 100
speed: 0.4sec
Focal: 23mm
EV: +1/3 (compensate more for dark models)
Flash: NO
Light source: Desk lamp
Tripod: yes
trigger: 2 second delay

I also used LightRoom 3 and Photoshop 5 for minor adjustments and dust and lint removable. Some tone mapping was used for lighting.

Great pics with great detail.

You should try using a 400 f/2.8L. That's my favourite lens

There's an alternative to this from Tamron and Sigma, but the sharpness is short of Canon's. Half the cost though. Took me a while to save it up, but it was well worth it. Nice review here: Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens Review

I lurk here often (not participate): Canon Digital Photography Forums - Powered by vBulletin, especially this section:Lens Sample Photo Archive - Canon Digital Photography Forums, to check out the opinions and sample images for a particular lenses.

You may also want to look into Adobe LightRoom 3 or 4. Post processing is vital in all images: sharpness, smoothness, noise reduction, tone mapping, etc.

Wow that lens is definitely really clear. I'm toying around with some of my settings after looking at your photos. The tripod definitely helps in these angle shots, I always just free-styled it since it take so many pictures around the model and it's time consuming to have each shot on the tripod - maybe only special angle shots I'll mount it.

My current equipment is just a beginner's DSLR camera: the Canon Rebel T3i with EF-S 18-135 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS standard zoom lens

I think the best I can do is something like this:

With this I'm on AV mode, F36, ISO100
but it's still not as clear as yours.
I see from your photos your dpi is really high, around 300. Mines only 75, how do I get the dpi higher. Any tips would be appreciated, thanks!

Do you have Adobe Lightroom? If you don't mind, I borrowed your pic and processed through LR3. I did a simple adjustment on Contrast, Sharpness, and noise reduction. LR3 will adjust the image's dpi when exporting. T3i is a good camera, so changing only the lens and post processing program will be sufficient for improvement.

I'm currently using Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 Bit)
I usually just use it to crop and adjust the brightness and contract

I rarely touch the sharpness or noise reduction. I might have to look into that.

I have CS5 also. I use both LR3 and CS5. Depending on kind of work, I may do LR3 first and vice versa. But I always end the work with LR3. And yes, tripod really helps with the sharpness.

For all APS-C (cropped sensor) camera, aperature f/9~13 seems to be at the sharpest. Anything above f/16, the light will start to scatter (I forgot the photography term).

Nice pics A DSLR is great and there are times I miss being able to control shutter speed and aperture settings. Unfortunately I don't take enough pics to justify the cost.

I have this Autoart Police car as well. Too bad I didn't get round to adding the Nissan Skyline versions although I have the street R34 models.

Last year, I took my daughter to Disneyland for the first time and brought along my Sony Point-n-shoot HX7V. After getting home and looked over the photos, how I wished that I had a better camera to captured that moments. Same story with this new lens on how I wished I had a better glass to capture the irreplaceable moments.

Thanks CP for the compliment. .....and I also passed on the Skyline COP car too.

Thank you MJ. I have another lens on the way, so I'll do another sample pic review again. The downside to the DSLR is the weight. Heavyyyyyy....

lol DSLR is pretty heavy, especially when you add more accessories to it. My latest venture is this CN160 LED light on top, that just adds more to the weight. Looks like a badass though

Now that is heavy.

As for me, for additional lights, I use Canon 430 EX II as the main and 270ex II as slave remote.

My ancient CANON FT QL with 100-200mm zoom from 40+ years ago. Still in working order.

Do you normally use flash in your photos? I feel like the picture quality is better with a flash and I use a flash diffuser to spread the light

but thanks to your tips the pictures are getting better, my latest test shot

Your photo is looking much sharper now. I use mostly "smart sharpen" and "unsharp mask" sliders. Sharpening causes mosquito noises so I use noise reduction right after.

I use flash when necessary, such as when taking a pic of cabin interior or an engine compartment. And when I do use a flash, I do either the bounce flash effect or an angular flash using a second flash (slave) to brighten it from the side/rear.

For this example, I used the bounce flash.
EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (my old lens)

Here, the second flash (slave) was placed from the left-rear and main flash doing the bounce.
EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (old lens)

ANA Mohican, those pics are so good, that if Century Wings used them, collectors would have no problem spending $150+ on an F-14 model! Hope you post more pics. Thank You for sharing with us!
