Corgi PBY-5A Catalina USAAF, John S. McCain US36109

Got this from one of our forum member Andrer1757, great seller, well-protected and prompt shipping. Thank you for that.

I initially never looked at this model because I have the Black Cat Catalina, but this is a really cool model. The Blue color suits it well. This aircraft was flew by Vice Admiral John S. McCain (grandfather of Senator John S. McCain III), he flew critical supplies in and out of the Guadalcanal Island. It was the very first aircraft to land at Henderson Field when US forces took control of the area. This model is still in stock at various retailers such as the FlyingMule. Enjoy these pictures:

Thanks SKF. That's a great looking model. Can you put in another aircraft, perhaps a fighter or WW2 bomber for size comparison like you did for the Kiowa? That was very helpful.

Sure, here she is next to a Dragon Wings F4F-4 Wildcat in the same scale. The Catalina is a large aircraft

Thanks. That really adds another level of wow. Great choice of companions. I'm not a big fan of the Catalinas, but I may have to get one anyway. It's a very iconic bird, and very impressive the way you've presented it.

Snafu Snatchers would probably be my first choice, but this one looks very nice, and the Guadalcanal history makes it even more desirable.

Those radial engines up high and the details make for a very nice display.

I was also looking at the Snafu Snatchers when I was looking for a blue Catalina, but the blue on that one seems really bright and unrealistic. See the mule's picture here
Corgi AA36102 - PBY Catalina Diecast Model, USAAF 2nd ERS, "Snafu Snatchers", New Guinea: The Flying Mule

With that color mixed with the white color and stand-out logo, it really makes it look fake or like a toy. At least that's my opinion. This one is more subtle like the real thing. Plus it's newer, the Snafu Snatchers was Corgi's second Catalina model so they probably didn't get everything right.

I see what you mean. The blue on this one is much better. The black on the leading edges together with the absence of the white markings on top makes for a more believable model. I agree, the insignia is much better without the high contrast.

Digging up an old thread here--but how is the accuracy on this one?

The wheels appear set pretty deep inside the fuselage. Is that correct?

I am gonna say no. And to be frank,...it looks rather odd. As the other Pooch Amphibs don't look like that.

A friend of mine knows the type very well indeed. Ill ask him.

The wheels should be sticking out slightly if anything

There are Corgi releases without the attachable retracting gear

Yes,..the Catalina has two generic types, flying boat, which are water bound and required a landing gear to be attached to pull it out of the water,....Penbroke and Sullom Voe Cats and the others are amphibians with their own landing gear,.....Black Cat and the McCain Cats.

Corgi did well to replicate both types. But the recess for the landing gear appears to be wrong. I have the Black Cat and it has the same problem.

Hey Kruse,...I assume you noted the discussion on the topic over at the other place mate.

In effect, its a fault with the tooling. It can be rectified, but its permanent.

Learned something new today. I have both the Black Cat and Snafu Snatchers, but they stored away so I never knew the wheels fitted into the body too deeply.

Me too,...my Black Cat is on display,...in flight and I never realised how bad the problem is.

Still,...its a stunning bit of Diecast.

I'm surprised this issue has gone relatively undiscussed. Is it because the last couple of Catalina releases haven't featured retractable landing gear?

That comment has been a couple of times recently.

Sounds about right. The last two were flying boats,..as opposed to Amphibians. I guess on the old DAF it would have been extensively discussed.
