I'm going to give this a try. The Fairfield, CA area is very dry most of the year and the grass goes from green in the spring to brown by mid summer, so this 'burnt grass' mixed with some fine sawdust should get the look I am going for. $8 shipped on Ebay, should be more than enough for my small areas.

Well, I did the grass today, and I'm pretty happy with the result. I might add in a little fine sawdust in the future to increase the sun-burnt look, but for now it definitely adds some depth and detail to the base. Next up is some scale ground equipment to further enhance detail levels.

The grass looks great. Like you said, it adds dimension and a bit of texture that complmients the aircraft well.

Your Nighthawk looks to be taking a nap.

Yeah, unfortunately Dragon didn't mold them with landing gear. This one has the US flag on the bottom, so it's too bad there's no way to display that. I have a second one coming in with an E-3B, and I might put something small like a piece of plexi under them just so they don't look fully on their bellies. One problem I am now running into: no more room on the display. I have a feeling I will be clearing a shelf for more 1/400 stuff and then I can periodically change the look of the diorama with different aircraft. One I definitely want to find is the Dragon 1/400 B-2 bomber with the landing gear, but that sucker isn't easy to track down.

My 2 cents in:

I think that I would pull the whole layout away from the wall till you are at the edge of the table. Then fill in that space anything that looks like concrete. Then by the outlet, you could paint a hanger for a C5 and then do the same for smaller planes.

Ive got some 1/144 hangers you could have.

I am space limited, it is a small overlook area and the table needs to stay where it is. I was tempted to paint a backdrop on the wall, but this is my parent's place and I rent the apartment, so I'm not doing anything permanent up there. Plus, everything is glued down to the tabletop, so I can't shift it, and the table has a raised surface so I'm kinda locked in anyway, and I like the wood border acting like a frame.

A backdrop would look pretty great, and you don't have to paint the folk's wall. Just get a piece of plywood, 1/8" thick, the length of the table and about 12" wide. Use your artistic talent and either paint hangers, trees and sky or have a murel strip made and glue it to the board. Then either prop it against the wall, or if you're afraid it might fall and smush your models, glue a 1"x1" strip to the base behind the backdrop and glue it to the table. I guarantee it will improve an already excellent diorama by quite a bit.

Great idea folks.

Plastruct makes excellent scale building materials. They have corrugated sheet plastic that looks like hangar walls, doors, etc. You wouldn't have to build the whole hangar, just the fronts.

You still would be better to still pull the layout, out to the edge of the table and then cut the other side of the runway off and you gain all that extra room on the wall side.

One 1/8' on the wall with a cut out of the wall plate and then paint the lenght and whatever is the height for the layout.

Last, you should move the biggest out front! like a C5 up in the air with another just behind and then your KC-10s giving more round to the rear.

No one here is telling you to take down what you did, but trying help you to enlarge what you have.

Also, if you were to take the layout to the edge of the left side! facing the wall, then on then on the right side you could take the taxi waik out and make it all grass, runway longer, as well parking area.

And just maybe and small road in the grass for the tower, instead somewhere on the parking area

My 2 cents

Randy

I can't move the layout, it's all glued down to the table. It is what it is at this point. Also, my KC-10A Great White is displayed in flight because it arrived from it's Ebay seller with broken landing gear, so for now I'm stuck with that as my takeoff plane.

Just got my E-3B, Westover C-5, and Air Force One 747-200 in. I had no idea how large the 747 actually was, it's really not that far behind the C-5. What an awesome model too! Pics soon.

Hey: You know planying Q & A with your field brings more questions! Your coffee table, whats under the field, if its glass you could just take the glass out and replace it with new and still enlarge it.

Since its glued down then why not just add more wood around the edges to enlarge the table and then. the field.

I just added these ideas when you said that it the field was glued to the top which means the table is shot and no good for anything else! So enlargeing the top by adding wood around will not hurt the value of the table.

By enlargeing just don't make the width larger then the inside jam of the door, like about 31 1/2". That when you move out you can just walk it out. ?????

It's not glass, it's raised wood and can't be removed. I think for now it will do, and in the future when I get my permanent residence I will build a much larger diorama with more involved taxiways and structures. For $40 invested not counting the planes, I'm happy, it's been fun building it.

Sometimes the members here are a little more helpful than you'd want. You've done a great job with your diorama, but we just wanted to see your talent stretched a bit. Hopefully our enthusiasm for your project isn't annoying you.

I think I might buy one of these and steal the hangar section, then put it on the back side of the display to add some structures. I won't get all 4 sections, but just the face of a hangar on that back wood area will probably add a bunch of dimension.

I'm thinking put it behind where I have the F-117s parked as a fighter hangar. I know it's small.

$43 shipped on Ebay. OUCH! But I had to have it to go with the Low-Viz USMC bird. Gonna cool it on aircraft for a bit, try and focus on the hangar, some GSE, and possibly a re-do of the parking ramp without all the lines and markings...Haven't decided yet.

Yeah, that was the one. Sorry to beat you, but I wanted it to go with the low-viz. I just got a killer package in today, a guy sold me a 1/72 F-15C Eagle Langley AFB and 1/72 F-16 Viper Tiger Meet by Dragon along with the following 1/400: Gemini C-130H "Dyess AFB", Dragon C-130E 37th Airlift Squadron, Dragon C-130H Tennessee ANG, Dragon E-3B Sentry, Dragon E-3A sentry with polished fuselage, KC-10A Great White, C-130K RAF Lyneham, and KC-135E Arizona ANG (missing "stowed" boom) all for $70 shipped. As it works out, my original KC-10A Great White was bought damaged, so now I have a mint one, and my first E-3A also arrived with blemishes, so it has been replaced with a mint one, and I scored a few nice random USAF birds. I have no interest in the RAF Hercules, but otherwise I think I made out good! Only problem is I am WAY out of room on my diorama...

You got the bug, about collecting. I would say yes on the C-130 but not the other 2. Ive been on a kick of late mostly trying my luck at C5s, C-17s and C-130s. Ive got 18 KC-10s and 12 KC-135s.

I got the bug long before hand on C-17s. But my longest bug sofar has been Micro Machines Military, it comes close to 1/144 and I also collect 1/144 WW2 & Modern vehicles and thats where MMM help fill the void that no one at this time makes. Mostly items like APCs, Trucks etc.

Lets do the C-130.

Well I got the Lancer and the Blackbird 1/400s in today. I really like the B-1B, it's a sharp looking model with great lines, and I might just have to get the USAF test program version with the forward swept wings to compliment it. The 1/400 Blackbird is nice, but I'm a bit disappointed to see that Dragon only put 2 tires on the main gear, and not 3. Otherwise it's a nice representation in this scale and should look good on the base if I can find a spot to park it.

I have 8 of the B-1s and 1-71. You have to watch out when you take them out of the box, because the tires like to come off....

How about $15.00 for the C-130
