The pitot on one of my F-111s has also disappeared, mysteriously since I don't have any cats :-) I just noticed it was gone one day, and is nowhere to be found.

Are you going to replace yours or doesn't it bother you? When my F-105's pitot snapped I got a replacement nosecone from HM and it was an easy fix, the old one came right off. The problem is that the F-111's nosecone seems stuck fast. I wonder if you or others have some hints or tips for removing it. I guess the only other option is cutting the pitot off a replacement nosecone and glueing it on.

Those CW Intruders are very cool to, just bought 2 of them a week ago.
The Eagles and the Green knights one, did you noticed that on the green knights Intruder the name of the pilot is the same on both sides?
Hope to see more from u soon if ur wallet survis

Nick.
Thanks Nick. I knowingly overspent last month, so no new models other than a couple I'm watching on ebay, for a while. My house insurance came due last month and put me in a holding pattern. It's funny how my house is worth 40% less than 4 years ago, but my insurance has gone up 20% in one year.

I didn't notice that on the Intruder. I don't pay that close attention. They could write Adm. Tom Cruise on one and I wouldn't notice...

Sorry. I'm clueless about how these models are assembled... where they're glued, where they're screwed, etc...

I would just get a wire roughly the same diameter and stick it on with epoxy. That would give you a little working time, a strong bond, and could easily be sanded and painted. I'm not going to worry about mine unless I decide to sell it... then I would fix it or tell the buyer that it's broken. I would tell them that it was a code 3 if I did repair it. For now, I'll just believe a bird hit it and tore it off, and maintenance is to lazy to fix it.

I'm sure SKF or other verteran collectors could tell you the best way to fix it.

Speaking of which... where are Swept Wings, Eagle Driver and ChairmanMilo? Haven't heard much from them lately.

Thanks Scott. Could manage to make one along the lines of what you suggest, probably more cost-effective that way.

Was wondering about SweptWings, would be good to see more of his photos.

Hi Scott,

In one of your posts, can't remember which, you talked about fixing the problem of the gap between the weapons pallets and the fuselage on CW F-14's? Something about a "hair dryer" fix? I've got a Fast Eagle and a Bounty Hunters with this problem and would appreciate any advice on how it could be corrected?

Thanks
Steve

Hey Steve.

I can't remember who told me about it, but I basically held the rear of the pallet with small pliers and heated the forward 2/3 with a hair dryer while applying pressure to the bottom (visible side) by holding the front of the pallet against a table. This heated the plastic enough to soften it up to curve it slightly.

Just heating it without pressure was not enough to work. Maybe my hair dryer is a wimp?

While it was very hot, I put it on the model and held it tightly in place with insulated gloves in front of a fan and allowed it to cool in that position. I had to apply a good deal of pressure, and used a couple folded towels to support the plane while it was upside-down to prevent damaging anything. This allowed it to close the gap between the forward fuselage and the pallet.

It's not perfect, but it's much better than original. This didn't work with my VF-31 Tomcatters as the posts were too long. I will one day file them down and seriously try to fix it, but the gap is much greater, and I'm afraid of overheating the pallet too much where the weapons pins won't line up with the holes. I hate to do a real code 3 on it, but may. I definately don't want to putty it and try to mix the correct color, although the salt air environment regularly discolored these beasts. Also, there is supposed to be a slight gap there, but not enough where you can see the pins.

I also had to do some of the rear pallets as they were slightly bowed, and rocked back and forth on the plane.

I hope this helps, and it definately won't hurt as the plastic is very rigid. Just be careful and take your time.

Previous discussion thread, although there isn't really any info on how to fix the issue other than "heating them with a hair dryer".

Thanks for taking the time to give such a detailed explanation. I'll hopefully give it a go in the next few days.

Many thanks for your advice

New Arrivals. HM3802 F-16CG 555th FS Aviano and HM RF-4B Playboys

There are a few quality issues with the RF-4B:

The F-16 is a great new addition. Minor problems that have already been pointed out, but I'm very happy with the purchase.

I found this HM Pershing on eBay for $20 shipped. Amazing detail.

Great! Pete is having a 4th of July Sale. I thought I might save some money this month. Oh well....

Nice, particularly that RF-4. Was a little underwhelmed by the F-16 when it came out, but doesn't look bad at all here. Definitely getting the Polish release with CFTs but if I see the Aviano one around I'll take it based on this. Thanks for posting.

My first Corgi medium. Corgi AA38403 Bristol Blenheim MkIF - Summer 1941.

I love it. No fiddly parts. All I had to do was put on the main landing gear and stick it on the stand. Fantastic quality.

I got this on sale for $35 at the Mule. Had to get another model to meet the $75 free shipping requirement. It is on sale again right now. I highly recommend it.

On the shelf with a Spitfire for company...

I agree it's a very nice model. I got the desert camo Paramythia release which I think was quite unpopular, but I love it. I plan to add this as well as a Mk IV. The Mk IV's nose section makes it a better looking aircraft to my taste.

I was kind of struck by how small an aircraft it is, particularly for two engines. It seems less substantial, almost delicate even in comparison to a Beaufighter. Compared to an Invader for example it's a remarkable difference.

The Mule is having an excellent sale as well, Scott. I just ordered 9 (well technically 10) models for $220! That's insane! Bought quite a few WWII birds as well so i'll be posting some pictures soon

The Mule is getting a lot of my money recently... Great sale that just ended. I was so tempted to get that XP Sundowners Phantom, but talked myself out of it.

Thanks Bill.

Just ordered some planes from OB's Diecast Planes. These prices seem a little too good to be true. OB´s Diecast Planes : Scale model airplanes, diecast aircraft, model military vehicles, Thousands of Products - Competitive Prices, Highly-detailed, historically accurate diecast airplanes

I was cruising around Dave's Hobby Master Collector pages when I ran across them in the military retailer section. Hobby Master Retailers for Military Models index

Products

1 x HA1201 TBM-1C Avenger President Bush VT-51 San Jacinto 172 Scale(HA1201 Avenger 172 Scale) = $36.95

Some new arrivals this week. I traded my X-Wing Fighter for some diecast models and have been watching eBay.

The first four unboxed are:

Skymax SM5003 Japanese Val Dive Bomber
Corgi AA34212 British Chinook HC1B, Beruit, Lebanon
Corgi AA36706 German Ju-88A Operation Steinbock
Hobby Master HA0113 German Ju-87 D-3 Stuka, Ukraine 1944

The Val is colorful and rather large. It has very fine detail and stands out from the other Japanese planes in my collection. I may have to get a couple more of these.

The Chinook is awesome. My first Corgi helicopter. The only thing I don't like is the way they attached the upper-rear cargo door to the bottom ramp. This ruins the option to show the common way crews leave the top door open during flight.

The stand gives the helicopter a slight downward angle while in-flight mode. Is this normal? I know this is the attitude they typically fly in, but I remember seeing many people display them with the nose high. Is there a way to adjust this?

The Ju-88 has a very cool camo pattern. I'll have to be careful. I can see where they can get addictive. I like the cockpit detail and the fact that all I had to do was put the stand together and set the plane on it. The undercarriage looks good, but I like the in-flight mode for most WW2 bombers.

Stuka! My first of many, I think. HM did a great job, and I like the Russian front camo.

I updated the shelf arrangement, trying to keep things in a logical position. It doesn't always work, but it sure is fun figuring out how to position them.

Misc shelf

Navy & Marines and USAF shelves:

Fast Eagles and The Bugs:

Tomcats and Intruders:

Phantoms and SEA shelves:

Luftwaffe shelf:

WW2 and Early Jet shelves:

Modern Fighters shelf:

Pre-order arrivals.

Hobby Master HA3704 CAF Hawk One CF-101 Voodoo. This is simply an astounding release. The level of detail is great. I was initially wary of the colorful nature of this bird, but I think this will be a classic. It has a unique appeal. The only problem is with the stand. I have the other 3 Voodoos, so it's probably just a manufacturing defect. The top of the stand comes loose from the middle part very easily, as I found out when it quickly dumped the model backwards onto the table. Added white glue, but will probably add super glue for piece of mind.

Hobby Master HA1930 F-4C Ubon Thailand, July 1965 "First USAF MiG Killer"

I love any MiG killer, plus it's a Phantom, so therefore a must-have for me. The livery is very nice, and original for my collection. Simple is sometimes the best.

This release has pretty bad canopy fit, as you can see in the photos. Phantom quality has been going downhill for me lately. Is anyone else having these issues?

The RIO sits higher in the cockpit... so this is an improvement over other Phantoms. The paint is crisp and the markings are very well done. Huge insignia on the wing... I like it.

These 3 arrived last week. What a great deal. I've been wanting a 3 color Avenger. I never would have thought to find President Bush's. I'd been outbid on eBay at over $60 a couple months ago.

The Mirage 2000 and Stuka are also wonderful additions.

That Voodoo is a real charmer. I think you'll be very happy to have it.

Plenty of space. I can now move some up with the eagle on top of the shelves. I'm really liking the WW2 subjects. Thankfully, they're smaller. I have the first Canadian and Recon Voodoos in the boxes for now, but they will take their places shortly.

I have another hobby collecting Statocasters. I just sold '62 reissue for a $300 profit, so now it's just a matter of downsizing that collection and reallocating resources to afford the upcoming F-4 Chico, F-106 Montana, Canadian F-18 Showbird, Polish F-16, Deal of the Century F-16, and the Corgi Lancaster and maybe the Stirling. Guitars are popping up in the local pawn shops, and occasionally they don't know what they are worth. That's when I pounce.

Some new arrivals.

I thought I was getting a kilo of something illegal when this arrived. It got some interesting looks from my co-workers. Now they're wondering what I'm up to with all these packages arriving from half way around the world...

I found this on eBay for US $2.99 + $14.91 shipping. No box, but packaged well and a great addition for my Luftwaffe collection. I haven't researched this Corgi release, so I'm not sure of the specific model number. It's a fine model with excellent detail. It seems smaller that the Gemini Aces Bf-109 I have. The fuselage didn't change sizes between variants did it? Regardless, a great little bird for the money:

I am excited to get this Corgi Chink 69 Sea King. A superb mold and great story behind this bird. I got it from parsig over at the DHP for US $85 shipped, which may be a bit high, but I am happy, and they are kinda hard to find.

My first He111. This is a wonderful plane and an icon of WW2. Aikens still has this one in stock, and I noticed it going for a little more on eBay. Very heavy and great quality:

I also added a Corgi Stuka. Here it is with my 3 HM versions. The quality seems the same as the HM ones: great.

I found this Dragon Wings F-14 Miss Molly on eBay for US $41 shipped. The quality seems nice, but it's no CW. The paint is a very dull coat low-vis that chips off very easily. Overall it is a great addition. I wasn't sure which one to get: the Dragon, Witty , or FOV.

The fiddly bits were a nightmare. I hate the way the sidewinders mount, even with the special tool included for installing them. I had to file the holes to make them fit, and broke off one pylon when mounting the Sparrow. All fixed now, but a PITA.

The main landing gear is by far the worst scale model engineering I've seen by far. The hole for the main strut is a flexible rubber, that will not allow the gear to stay vertical. I had to super glue the strut to the fuselage side to keep the bird from squatting down, like it was trying to lay a Phoenix egg...

The markings are exceptional, the detailing sharp, and I am very happy overall with this colorful Sundowner. It's a love/hate relationship with Dragon.

Awesome Scott! I think you've been on a bigger shopping spree than me!

With regards to your Chinook and stand, you can move the little tab (that actually inserts into the helicopter) and play with the angles.

I love my Chink 69. One of my favourite helicopters. Unfortunately, I haven't read up on the history of this particular aircraft

Hi peetrick,

They shipped quickly and the only problem was they had the Avenger part number wrong (HM instead of HA) and sent me an email asking to verify if that was the model that I wanted. I replied and the models shipped the next day. Very good communication, I would say.

I did use PayPal for my checkout, so that keeps retailers on their toes, but credit card companies will be just as diligent if you call them.

They have some great prices and a few models that I couldn't find anywhere else.

I wouldn't worry about it. Let me know how it goes.

Edit: I got my orders confused. The Avenger problem was with OB's Diecast, and it was resolved quickly. My order from Collectable Jets is scheduled for delivery tomorrow via FedEx tracking. I'll let you know then if anything is amiss. Sorry for any confusion. Brain fart.

You are correct sir. The pitot tube is missing. As there is no hole, I would assume this is a production error and may be present on other Dragon Tomcats. No biggie. I will stick a toothpick on the front with bubble gum and let it ride. j/k

Dragon never sends me any pilots or RIOs. Kinda like Skymax and the early HM releases. Guess I'll have to get the HM pilot set if I can remember.

All the planes I ordered at the Collectable Jets 35% sale arrived in excellent shape, so no problems with order accuracy or shipping.

I just got my first F-15. The Witty F-15C is a very nice model. I've been keeping an eye out for the IS release and got it on eBay... a week before The Flying Mule got all those wonderful old releases. Needless to say I have some Dragon F-15Cs and one E on the way.

I hear that the Witty E is pretty bad, so I've steered clear of it. This C is excellent for the price and now I have the whole operational teen series.

I also got a Dragon P-47 and a HM Helldiver. While reading about the P-47, it said it was the second largest single-engine WWII warplane. I never realized it was so big. I have some comparisons below with my Avenger (the biggest) and the Helldiver. Mean machines.

The Helldiver is great. Wonderful detail and very interesting.

Rats. The P-47 antenna fell out.

The B-25 doesn't seem to sit correctly on it's landing gear. Either the front gear is too short or the main gear too long. The parts are snug... I checked and re-checked. I hope I didn't install them incorrectly. Any suggestions or info on this issue?

I picked up a Witty F-104 stand after reading the Witty Stand Compatibility thread over at the DHP. Great info !!! I'll be buying many of the stands. They offer a great deal of variety in displaying my models.

I stuck one of my HM Mirage 2000s on the Witty F-104 stand. Simply wonderful:

Fine new additions Scott. That is possibly the nicest B-25 available. I don't have information on the landing gear issue but it wouldn't be the only Corgi model to have a suspect stance, the Vampire is totally wrong and the downwards angle of the Meteor seems exagerrated to me.

Glad to see the B-24 unboxed, it looks really nice. It's one heavy piece of diecast. The Mosquito has to be one of the most beautiful aircraft of all times IMPO.

Thanks for posting.

Finally. I've patiently waited for a Corgi B-17G and found this one on eBay for $208 shipped. I love the bare metal finish and colorful livery. I was also watching for 'Sentimental Journey', but it looks like it will be out of range of my budget unless I get lucky.

BoL is simply amazing. It looks great on the shelf and being such an icon of the era, I feel like my collection is almost complete... ( like that's gonna happen ).

My cat approves and didn't eat the tail guns:

Chico is here !!! All the great reviews are on par. It looks great on the Witty F-14 stand:

Sorry for the lousy pics. The sun was coming through the window making them a little grainy. Plus, my photography skills are still lacking.

Here are some with the planes on the shelves:

I have been a little on the fence about Bit O Lace, but definitely think it is worth adding after seeing the photos. Chico is a awesome Livery definitely worth it.

Nick, yeah those b17's are very addictive, I hope Corgi or someone starts making them again, but where to put them.

That Witty F-15 was inspired from your shelf. It is the best looking livery to me. It took a long time to find one a a decent price. I think I paid ~$40. I do get my C, D, E, and Fs mixed up...

Thanks Nick. I think I'm done with the heavies unless a really good deal comes along. I would like another B-17 and/or B-25 in the standard AAF scheme. I also have the Corgi Lanc and Sterling on pre-order. The B-24 popped up on the Mule for $119, and the B-17 and B-25 were both Buy-it-Now offerings on eBay around the same time. $208 for the B-17, $150 for the B-25. Best prices I've seen in a while. A BoL sold for $355 right as I got this one.

I didn't like BoL when I first saw it, but it grew on me. I also noticed how nice these more colorful birds make the collection look to me. It breaks up the monotony of camo schemes (which I absolutely love).

I'm planning a Desert Storm shelf, so I'll be on the lookout for some armor and unusual liveries to break up the two-tone gray that will be prevalent.

I don't think I've achieved fanatic yet... I still haven't sold the girlfriend. I do get inspiration from others collections... so yes, it's all your fault. There's just so many earlier releases that I wanted to get caught up on.

I didn't want to wait for a uber expensive Strike Eagle from HM, so the Witty C and D were on my list. The F-15 is needed for any serious collection. The IS livery looks great. I had many chances to get the Japanese or aggressor releases, but the standard low-vis was essential to me. About a week after I got it, the Dragon F-15 C and Ds appeared on the Mule. Such great prices (under $30) I had to get a couple of those as well.

After the Corgi Lanc and Sterling arrive, I think my heavies will be complete. There are still a few medium bombers that I'd like to get, but I am very patient. I can wait for the sales. If I see the He111 Doodlebug, I may pay more for it, but again, I think patience will pay off.

There's a Corgi Apollo Recovery Sea King on eBay right now, but it's already over $100, so I won't be getting it. I got the Chink 69 for $49.99 and that is filling the role of a US Sea King for now.

I'm really hoping Falcon fixes those intake issues on the F-1 and Mirage III molds because they look awesome.

I want every F-100, F-101, F-105, and F-4 HM ever made, but it's not gonna happen. To me, they are the best models available right now. The CW Corsair IIs and A-6s are next IMO. It's a great time to be a collector.

I was eyeing that Apollo Sea King too, but the price is steep. That is a "one-day" for my collection though...

A couple new arrivals made it to the shelves. A Dragon Tiger Meet F-16 and a Huey from HM. Both great additions.

I also cut the main gear of my B-25 shorter. It was two pennies to high as you can see from the before and after shots.

With pennies:

After chopping of and refitting the gear post to the base of the main landing gear pieces:

[QUOTE=Skinner67;977145]Chico is here !!! All the great reviews are on par. It looks great on the Witty F-14 stand:

My Chico crashed.. Dropped it when I was fixing something on the under carriage. Starboard stab and broke clean off (luckily I was able to snap it back on without any glue) and the pitot head broke. Somehow I'm missing one set of napalm (?) and gun cannon- they just disappeared - really weird. It's just sitting in it's box as I'm too ashamed to display it (or fix it for that matter).

Nice new additions, keep it up!

Sure... you were fixing something... and not doing strafing runs on a family member? That sucks. You need to hurry and do a recon mission to locate the MIA pieces before they end up on the black market. That is too sweet of a model to sit in it's box.

I couldn't find one of the main gear doors for the Mitchell after I had redone the undercarriage. I looked around my kitchen table... where I do repairs/fitting on a nice stable surface to avoid mishaps It was nowhere to be found. I even cleaned up the area and was about to sweep the floor, when I saw it in it's appropriate place on the model.
