Default Question Regarding Licensing

Out of general curiosity, how does licensing work when making models of:
1. Defunct airlines? Is it free rein?
2. Old liveries of merged airlines (ex. Northwest, US Airways, Continental, etc.)?
3. Imaginary aircraft/airline combos (ex. US carrier liveries on Russian aircraft)?

I believe I can answer part of your question:

It is my understanding the licensing permissions have to be obtained as long as there is an organization/Corporation/whatever that controls the particular product. For example, even though Pan Am has been out of business for a long time, a railroad company eventually purchased the licensing rights to the name and logo. I'm not sure if they still hold it, but they did for number of years. Same thing with merged carriers. For example, the merged United/Continental retains the license for both carrier names. I'm not sure, however, the time frames allowed for holding them. Delta Airlines retained the Western Airlines rights for a number of years, but I believe that it has expired.

I leave myself open to correction by those who know for sure.

Not quite!

The laws are different in each country regarding that issue; it's a slippery slope, but if you are familiar with the law, you can accomplish a lot more than those who are not.
