The tsunami warning are in effect here too, in Indonesia, for this evening, including the places near my hometown.

I hope everything will be ok here. Hope the death toll in Japan won't be as high as it seems...

We have tsunami warnings, but I would suspect those far away will just have higher than normal tides. Even after the indonesian tsunami we in Aus just had higher tides.

Good luck to those in Japan.

That footage was pretty damn scary too, watching the tsunami sweep across the ramp and swamping the airbridges was incredible. I wonder if they managed to get any aircraft away in advance, couldn't see any in the tv pictures so far...?

Looks like they're quite worried about one if not two nuclear reactors too, let's hope they can contain those...

I woke up in a great mood until I turned on my computer and TV to see the news about Japan and the subsequent tsunami. Caused me to become pretty emotional. We're on a tsunami warning now and the water levels have already risen. The peak is expected between 9:00-10:00.

R.I.P. to all of those who have perished.

Its a logistics thing Kai. Just think the wonders that all those choppers and Greyhounds can do to bring relief supplies to the inland.

From what I've heard, there are helicopters on board the carrier, which will help lift people out of the hardest hit areas.

The rural area was just swallowed by this massive slurry of water and debris. You would think the wave would stop after a while, like most waves do but it keeps on going. The area looks completely devastated. Tsunamis are, in my opinion one of the more bizarre and natural disasters with very odd characteristics. It looks terrible, but I am sure Japan can manage the situation. They are no strangers to Natural Disasters.

Hard to feel bad for dumbazzes who go down to the beach to film a tsunami...how stupid do you have to be to ignore repeated warnings about the unpredictability of those waves? I feel very badly for the people who lost their lives in Japan, though...they had almost no warning. It's heartbreaking to see the destruction there. My daughter tells me that a commuter train literally vanished with an unknown number of passengers...all swept to sea.

Geez it's been a bad year so far....first the floods and cyclones in Australia, then the quake in New Zealand, and now this in Japan and to top it all off, a 6+ quake in Tonga today. I hope that is it for the Pacific region for the time being. We need some time to get our breath back and get back on our feet. For those that have been directly involved in any of these events...hang in there, our thoughts and good wishes are with you all.

It's so depressing seeing the video footage shown on CNN and BBC and a 6+ quake just adds to all the problems they are already undergoing
May all our thoughts and prayers be with the Japanese people.

Newer estimates show that the death toll has risen to almost 10,000. The nuclear plant just adds to the problems.

Man, I hope that the survivors will be okay.

Saw the graph charting the plume of radiation if the power plant has a meltdown. It will sweep across the Pacific and smack right into the western US after about ten days. We'll be getting back some of the radiation we gifted the Japanese with 65 years ago. Karma may be coming. Let's hope not.

This disaster just seems to be getting worse and worse and with the threat of the meltdown now is worrying, i believe it wasnt the quakes that caused the initial trouble it was the back up power that failed after to keep the core cool.....my god this has so many knock on effects its hard to comprehend what could happen its looks something from a movie truly worrying

I 100% agree. If I have to see another Facebook status referencing "bi-winning" I'm going to puke.

But I saw all of the footage and photos on different sites and all I can say is my heart goes out everyone over there. What a terrible event.

Did Tsunamis hit Indonesia, Hawaii, or New Zealand as warned? I haven't heard anything.

As might be expected, aviation has been hit badly in the area also.
Yesterday, the TV news report showed smashed up light planes at what was an airfield and aerial views of a Japanese Air Base with Mitsubishi F-2As and Kawasaki T-4 trainers smashed into a hangar by the force of the water. There is not one aspect of life that hasn't been hit. Anyone seen any footage of airliners caught up in this on the ground?

Unsure about the countries you mentioned, but the Eastern Seaboard of the philippines did get a couple 1-1.5m waves.

What is frightening is that video starts with a dry road and a trickle of water. In just 5 minutes the force of the water is ripping buildings from foundations.
