Default My KMB collection

As a kid growing up in Hong Kong in the 1980s I was fascinated with buses, the way it sounds, and the way it looked. Lately I've started collecting 1:76 scale models of buses that I remember from my childhood, and below is a collection of buses that I liked. Of those, my favourite of all KMB buses was the MCW Metrobus - sadly all retired since May 2007 and most (if not all) have been scrapped . There are still other buses that I need to get to fill in the gaps, so eventually my collection spans all KMB buses that have been operated between 1981-1990, a list which includes Dennis Dragons, Daimler Fleetline, Mercedes-Benz O305 etc, which I do not have here.

Anyway, without further ado, here it is:

MCW Metrobus 9.7 metre - KMB fleet number M80
Model by Corgi. Shocking mould, if I may say so. I don't have it on display much.

Front row, left to right
1. Dennis Jubilant - KMB fleet number N364
Used as a prototype air-conditioned bus, but the system was later deemed unreliable and removed.
Model by Drumwell.

2. MCW Metrobus 11m - KMB fleet number S3M145
Used as a prototype air-conditioned bus, but the experiment was a failure and the system was later removed.
Model by Drumwell.

3. MCW Metrobus 11m - KMB fleet number S3M228
Model by Drumwell.

Back row, left to right
1. Leyland Victory Mk 2 - KMB fleet number G544
Used as a prototype air-conditioned bus, but the system was later deemed unreliable and removed.
Model by Drumwell.

2. Leyland Olympian 11m - KMB fleet number S3M228
Model by Buses Model Co.

3. Leyland Olympian 11m - KMB fleet number AL1
KMB's first fully operational air-conditioned bus.
Model by Buses Model Co.

4. Leyland Olympian 11m - KMB fleet number S3BL410
Model by Buses Model Co.

I'm no expert on buses, so can you explain why this one has a terrible mould?

It's nowhere near as accurate as the Drumwell model. The destination display panel is completely wrong - Drumwell does this much, much better. The windscreen is also way too deep. It ruins the whole proportions of the front end. That's the flattering angle of it too. Its rear end is very wrong.

Here's the real thing from a similar angle: http://www.gakei.com/kma/km080b.jpg

You do have quite a bus collection there. I think some of those buses were leased to KCRC before they were scrapped in 2007.

Just curious, do you have any KCR or MTR models as well?

No, I don't, just KMB. I wasn't around when KMB leased their Metrobuses to KCR. The whole idea of my collection was to reminisce about the good old days when I used to live in Hong Kong, so I'll limit my collection to buses I remember being on back in the 1980s, and even then I'll only select those with decent moulds.

..... I lived in Hong Kong for three years in the 1970s. Did they stop painting the buses (and the trams too) in advertisements? I remember there did seem to be no two buses alike. Always very colorful.

They still painted buses in advertisements in the 1980s and 1990s (mostly tobacco advertising), but seems to be less so nowadays. These days, advertising is only on a banner on the bodywork between the two decks.

Update: I've added one more bus model.

This is a 1:76 scale MCW Metrobus 9.7m, made by P&T models. It is not diecast, it is made from resin, and it is extremely accurate.

... and here is the real thing:

Since Facebook mysteriously changed the URL of one of my images in the opening post, here it is again:
