Unhappy Asia monsoon floods

I've been hearing news on the radio for several days about the massive floods occuring in China, India and especially Pakistan, with hundreds (if not thousands) of fatalities, and I'm a bit puzzled that no one raised this issue until now as we have several fellow members from Pakistan here. I sincerely hope they and their families are doing well.

Thanks for bringing this up man. Thanks to God none of my family are hurt by the floods but I know many people are. The saddest part is the poor people have to pay most for it. Doesnt help that there are MEANINGLESS riots going on too. This is one of those times Im very happy I live in the US

Well I was in London till today when I flew home this morning. What surprised me more than ever was how green everything was when I was landing. I thought I was landing somewhere in Europe. It was dark, cloudy and over cast and I could actually see clouds not too far away under which you could see the rain shower falling to the ground. We had to do a sudden go-around which was quite dramatic as he suddenly powered up, raised the gear and then suddenly dropped altitude and made a slow u turn for another approach. It seems there was another plane that just took off and he was either too close or not properly lined up. There was second captain on board in addition to the original captain and FO and all 3 were in the flight deck during takeoff and landing. I'll post the pics once I do my trip report. Some friends of mine also took pics of the go-around and second approach and the minute we touched down it started raining cats and dogs. I got home drenched from head to foot.

And then you look at the fires in Russia that are heading toward Chernobyl! Not a fun area to be in at the moment

An EK flight from DXB to KHI was diverted yesterday. The weather must have been really bad, which could only mean heavier downpours to add to the misery of the floods.

It's really such a shame when the poor in Pakistan lose whatever little they have, and sometimes don't even come back to the shanty homes they lived in.

there's a couple dams under some stress right now. if they breach, it could get uglier.

I wonder what steps are necessary to avoid this again in the future.

Well there was an EK 773ER which was taxiing out as my plane was heading to the gate and another EK A330 landed a few minutes later.

Well I have no idea about that but I took pics of Khi airport from the air as we were doing a go around and there was an EK 773 parked at the gate which taxied out as we docked at the gate at around 12.50pm (it actually waited for us to pass in front of it so it could start taxiing) and about 15-20 mins later an EK A330 landed which Hassan caught on camera as he said it was a superb landing and the time was probably close to 1.15pm by then.

Heard today that these floods, and especially the way their consequences were (mis)handled by local authorities, could cause concern and maybe political instability in Pakistan. Does anyone here (moin or others) could give us some insight about this ?

political instability is perpetual there, isn't it. It can only get more or less concerning.

it's unclear to me who is really in control over there. it seems like nobody respects Zardari.

Moin, I hope you live in the south away from the mess that's going on up north. Not enough reliable information is coming to the States, it's making it sound like there's nothing but chaos north of Islamabad.

It started off in the North West, has travelled through the centre (Punjab) and is now in Sindh (the province where Moin is in) that has suffered the most with the floods, but I think some distance from Karachi.

Nobody respects anyone over there. And the media does not help, with there being more tv "interview" shows there then in the US and Uk combined. Anyone who exists there has their own stupid show. Hopefully it does not become too bad in the SIndh, some of my family is there. It breaks my heart that there are so many kids in Pakistan who aren't getting enough food and are craving for things licke chocolate and chips

I'm fine so far. I don't think Karachi, where I live, will be effected.
