Default Anyone here lift weights?

The "How many of you are fat?" thread/poll gave me the idea to start a thread about weightlifting, something I am very much into. But first, in response to the replies in that thread from the self-proclaimed "heftier" members, let me just say:

Why am I not surprised that a bunch of aviation nerds are out of shape? Come on guys, have some pride in yourself and take care of your body! Afterall, it's the only one you've got.

Anyway, In addition to aviation/models, working out and being healthy is another hobby of mine. I've been into weightlifting since I was in high school, and got serious about it the summer after my junior year. In the 4 years since, I've learned a lot and am absolutely determined to keep lifting weights and stay in shape so long as I live. Not like it will be hard since it's something a thoroughly enjoy. I even work part time at a gym right now while I'm in college, which is the perfect job for me right now, especially since I can workout on the clock! There have been stretches of time where I've been too busy with school over the last couple of years to workout as often as I like (a couple stretches of 2-3 months or so where I was only lifting once a week at best), and I always kick myself for the losses I take during those times. The fact that you can quickly lose what takes a long time to gain is a great motivator to keep at it!

Right now, I lift 5 days a week but only work 1 muscle group a day, doing 8-12 sets per muscle. This is basically a bodybuilder style lifting schedule, and the idea is to work the heck out of a particular muscle, then give it a week to recover before it gets directly worked again. I also make sure I base my workouts around the major compound lifts, such as squats, benchpress, deadlifts, barbell rows, pull-ups, etc. I love the challenge of lifting weights and pushing myself to get stronger, plus the adrenaline rush and endorphine release during/after a workout is nice too, and a good stress reliever. And of course, the physical and mental benefits are a big reason why I like to lift...... and the fact that you look better naked.

So anyone else here serious about lifting? Anyone read/post at the wannabebig.com (cheesy name but good site) forums? I learned a lot from the articles and forums on that site when I was starting to get serious about lifting. I encourage anyone else looking to do the same to check that site out. Lots of good information on anything related to excercise, diet, nutrition, supplements, etc. I still check out that site from time to time, though the quality of posters/postings has seemed to dwindle somewhat over that past couple years. (Strange, the same is true for just about ALL the forums I read/post at, including good old DA.C. But that's another story...)

Did they start discussing aircraft models ?????
I think your post would be more suited to a "lonely hearts" forum.

Excuse me for starting a thread in the OFF-TOPIC section about a hobby that is infinitely more mainstream and beneficial than collecting model airplanes.

You are excused.
Please tell me. Do you cover yourself with oil, get very sweaty and wear those tight speedos.

Yes, I look just like this guy...

NOT.

By no means am I a competitive bodybuilder. I throw some weights around in a gym for an hour or so 4 or 5 days a week, like tens of millions of other people around the world who want to keep themselves healthy so they'll look and feel good and live a long life. And I happen to enjoy it. What's the problem with that???

Yeah, when I get around to it I do lift a little. I am more about building endurance and tone than getting "big" so I do a lot of reps of a little weight, usually only around 50 lbs.

Sorry, did I say there was a problem?

As a gym owner, I would be pretty annoyed if one of my customers threw weights around my gym. Let alone several well oiled, sweaty, speedo wearing hunks.
What happened to the phrase "pushing weights".

I'm sorry, you're a gym owner??? I never would have guessed, considering your hostile responses to this thread.

And my god man, do I really need to explain to you that I don't literally "throw" weights around? "Throwing", "pushing", whatever. Semantics. And you still try to somehow insult me with the oil, sweat, and Speedo comments...

I don't know what your deal is man, or what kind of gym you run, but it sure as hell sounds like the type I would never set foot in.

Sorry, I mean't to say "If I was a gym owners". Must be the lack carbohydrates and adrenalin.

I don't recall insulting your or attempting to. I simply asked if you oil yourself up, get sweaty and wear those tight fitting speedos, which by the way you have not responded to !!!

1. No, I do not oil myself up.
2. Yes, I get a little sweaty when I workout. It tends to be the natural physiological response when one exerts effort for an extended period of time.
3. No, I have never in my life donned a Speedo.

Any more questions?

Not much of the weight lifting type, but I do swim. Which works all the major muscles in your body.

Yes, I do have more questions.
  1. 1. How many members of your gym collect model aircraft.
  2. 2. How many of those collectors discus their "model hobby" on off topic gym forums.
  3. 3. Why don't you invest in some Speedos. Speedo Get Fit Kit - Speedo.com

Good grief, you are relentless! Ok, let's see...

1. Not many I would assume. I do know several fellow pilots that workout at my gym though.

2. N/A, but in response to this question, I will ask why you seem like this topic isn't valid for the off-topic section of a model aircraft hobby forum. People here discuss all sorts of other hobbies and subjects here in the off-topic section: weather, the Olympics, electronics, trains, professional sports, YouTube videos, photography.... why not weightlifting? I realize that most people here probably aren't into weightlifting, and that's perfectly fine. There are tons of sports and hobbies that I'm not into either. But excuse me if for once in the 7 years I've been on this forum, I wanna find out if any of my fellow model airplane enthusiasts are also in lifting weights.

3. Once again, I have no interest in owning or wearing a Speedo. I've gotta admit though, I'm a bit weirded out by the fact that a 44 year old dude on the internet suggested I "invest in some Speedos." As I said, I am not a competitive bodybuilder, meaning I don't take steroids, diet down to an unhealthily low body fat level, oil myself up, or prance around a stage in a Speedo. You either have some serious misconceptions about the sport/hobby of casual weightlifting, or are trying to be funny/insulting (which you've failed miserably at) by continuing to bring up Speedos...

Any more questions?

Q1. So you have never discussed your "other hobby" with your gym mates !!.

Q2.Yes it's an off topic thread, but one would expect that it would have the slightest relationship to a "Model Aircraft Forum".
On a personal note. I object to off topic threads that are way of mark, such as: Are you Fat. Do you throw weights, Will the 49'ers win. Is Axel Foley going to save me....

Q3. As a youngster you would probably not appreciate what Speedos have done for ladies of the last 15 or so years.
Don't worry, you are quite safe. Kids aren't mu thing.

Q4. Are you saying that "Competitive body builders" take steroids.
Q5. What's wrong witrh lubbing up with some oil. Especially when you are married to a wonderful woman. AS I AM.

Ok, once in 7 years you want to discucs your "Hobby" of "Throwing weights" on a model aircraft forum. I look forward to your next thread in 2017.

One would like to think that an "Off topic" thread would have some, be it distant, relationship to aircraft models.

Don't worry about being "Weirded" (new word) out. I have more interest in the mosquito that just bit me than I do you. Though I am intrigued why you give this negative "Vibe" about Speedos.

A1. I didn't say that. You originally asked how many members of my gym collect model aircraft. I have no clue. Do you expect me to ask every member (there are thousands) if they collect? It's reasonable to assume the vast majority do not. But sure, my "gym mates" are aware of my "other hobby". It's not like I'm ashamed to let people know I, *gasp*, collect model airplanes. Heck, I surf DA.C at work at the gym occasionally.

A2. I beg to differ that one should expect an off-topic thread to necessarily relate to a "Model Aircraft Forum". The very term "off-topic" means just that: topics that don't relate to the main subject of this forum!!! Holy thick-skulls Batman, I can't believe I'm actually debating this!!! Yes, a lot of off-topic posts here on DA.C do have something to do with aviation/model collecting, and understandably so. That is perfectly fine and dandy. I've read scores of internet forums and never have I come across a rule, written or not, that off-topic threads have to relate in some manner to the main theme of the boards. That's just whacked!

A3. You're right, I haven't the slightest clue what "Speedos have done for ladies of the last 15 or so years." Please enlighten me as to the meaning of this incredibly vague comment.

A4. Many competitive, and most professional, bodybuilders do in fact take an array of anabolic-androgenic steroids. Is this a surprise to you?

A5. Whatever floats your boat...

Not a problem. As a European I understand that your vocabulariy is limited.

On a side note:
I've got 12 UK/Middle Eastern models that I would like to shift.
400 scale and excellent condition.
May even throw a pair of Speedo's in.

I see a lot of threads like "The Vancouver 2010 Olympics thread", " Are you fat?", "Post a Pic of you!", "Mexico" and many others that have very little or no relationship to Aircraft Models or anything noramlly discussed on DA.C.

Well, now that you have told us that you are European, there is a good reason for you to fancy Speedos. In North America, it's not that trendy.

Q1- Why should you, I don't normally discuss collecting Model Airplanes with my friends, they aren't in to it. So I have other hobbies that I do with them that all of us would enjoy.

Q2-Well what do you really think off-topic means on a Model Airplane Forum.? Maybe something OFF TOPIC from Model Airplanes???

Q3- Hey, there are even some older guys that would never wear a Speedo for Various reasons...

Q4- You never Know.

Q5- Isn't that just Fantastic.

I don't usually lift weights. I usually get excerise by Running, Jogging, Swimming or Playing Hockey. Yet, I still fall under the Category of "very skinny".
