Default Shipping during the pandemic

In a few days I'll be putting up for sale, 21 models from my collection. (All but one are 1:200.) I'm only keeping five. I've never had a display case for them, and if my plan to split my time between America and London each year is successful, they'll never see the light of day.

That said, I've no idea what the cost of shipping is like these days and which carrier(s) is/are more reliable, given we're still in the pandemic. For those of you who sell and ship models, which carrier do you use? I live in Palm Springs, don't have a car, and don't live near a USPS or UPS facility. Thus, all shipping will need to be done by printing a label at home and requesting a pick-up. Just curious which one you guys use, is cheapest and most reliable. Thanks for your input.

I use UPS the overwhelming majority of the time. However, if you need pickups then the USPS is the only one that you can schedule for free. With FedEx & UPS, they'll pickup whatever you have for free if you're already getting a delivery from them that day or you can pay to schedule a pickup -- in which case if you are going to send multiple packages on the same day, I would schedule a pickup for just one of them and then give all of them when they show up.

It's always cheapest to setup an account with UPS or FedEx. Especially with UPS, you can use promo codes or you can setup an account through PayPal to get the regular PayPal discount through UPS. Generally I end up paying about $10-15 to ship a model with UPS.

You should keep in mind to that your box size will impact the cost more than anything else these days. Just about all of your 1/200 models will end up using the dimensional weight rather than the actual weight. It's best to try to find a box that most ideally fits the model you are trying to ship. A 3 pound narrow body sent in a 12x12x12 box is going to end up charging probably 7-10 pounds because of the size therefore it's charging you dimensional weight since it exceeds actual weight. With the USPS, it's just no dimension over 12 inches.

You should also be aware that all of the service guarantees are still suspended with the exception of overnight. So there is no refund if your 2nd Day to ground shipment is late.

Thanks for the tips. I wasn't aware of a PayPal discount with UPS.

I've a couple boxes that will accommodate two 747s and another couple that will accommodate two 727s. I'm hoping someone will be interested in buying multiples so I won't have to cut down those boxes.

It will be cheaper to send multiple models but probably not as cheap as you initially think. I would always price out the box you are going to send before giving a price. FedEx & UPS don't weigh out very often -- they just bulk out. Meaning, they're not overweight -- they're just out of space -- hence why dimensional weight get used so often.

Anyone else having very slow shipping times at the moment?
USA-AUS, China-AUS seems painfully slow.

Hi 747438,

For sure items are taking longer to be delivered, these days.

Sometimes it's taking 45-60 days to arrive from USA to AUS, China and or other countries in Asia.
