Default Parking rental cars

So, we've all seen the photos/stories of how planes are getting stored. I saw an article last week about parking excess rental cars at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. The article below shows some aerial photos of some of the lots.

I passed the speedway today. I only snapped two quick (and not very good) photos of the one of the grass lots but when I was on the way into work, it was still dark and I saw the taillights reflecting as I was coming over the hill and remembered the article so I took a somewhat better look on the way back home.

There are a combined 70,000 rental cars stored here in Orlando at 4 different sites by the airport. I went and saw them last week and it was overwhelming. One storage field pictured at the bottom of photos runs nearly the entire length of the runway here.

I'm sure the airport area is packed here. The photos I took are about 30 minutes away from the airport.

So fast forward to today and the lot is mostly empty now. I think they were all driven to the lot but they’ve been running multiple auto trucks for the last two weeks to clear them. I guess they’re flooding the used car market by now.

thanks for the update, I will have to check out Orlando today to see if they have unloaded that area too. Ironically my lease runs out next month on my car and I am having issues finding a new car I want due to inventory shortages.

So fast forward to today. In case you haven't been following, rental car companies have obviously significantly reduced their fleets and now with a new car shortage, prices are sky high.

I booked an Avis prepaid rate for a standard for $500 for 4 days last week. That is by the far the highest price per day I've paid and the rates have gone up. My Delta itinerary has Hertz offers at the bottom offering a compact for $180 per day. A guy at work is going to go to Bozeman and they wanted $400 per day.

Yeah I heard that too. I've got a WDW trip planned for the fall but we'll be staying on property so fortunately, I have no idea what MCO wants because I don't care.

Well, if you are visiting Hawaii and need 4 wheels to get around and keep it on the cheaper side. You might try U-Haul.

I read an article that people are renting U-Haul pickup trucks for $19.95 a day to avoid exorbitant car rental rates now.

In Canada, I think you're going to see that happen with airfares in general. Unlike the US where domestic travel has started coming back, it's still super slow here as we wait for further vaccines (coming along so-so compared to the rest of the world, but really slow compared to the US).

We're going to get to a point where people want to travel again but the planes are still parked, crews are untrained and there's not enough supply for demand.

It's then going to be "I can't believe how much the airlines are ripping us off!" (after having lost billions in a year)

Airfare has gone up. I’m going to Denver. The route is usually pretty cheap because Delta, United, Southwest, Frontier and Spirit all fly it non-stop out of Atlanta. I want to say you usually get it for around $200. Well Southwest was at $300 and Delta wanted $350. I ended up using miles on Delta. Now the flights I’m on are $700 but you can still get other flights for around $400. They also increased capacity. When I booked, all Delta flights were 737-900’s. My two flights are now A321’s and they upgraded two other flights to 767-400’s.

The car has also nearly doubled. They now want $960 for 4 days and that’s a prepaid rate.

Delta said 75% of their passengers responded that they are or intend to be fully vaccinated by early summer. It started off slow here but then it picked up real fast. I actually ended up going to a different state because the neighboring state was taking my work group regardless of where we lived. Then my state opened up after I already had my second dose scheduled.

I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday. She said she is paying $800 roundtrip from Atlanta to Portland. Insane.

I guess traveling is really up everywhere. The National Park Service is doing timed entry for the Rockies. They released all June dates yesterday at 10:00 AM. It was a good thing I had a reminder set. The day I wanted had about 300 slots (per car, not per person) each 2 hour entry window beginning at 5am. By 10:40, pretty much everything through 11 had already been claimed and by later that day, everything through 1.
