Default New Hobby....Well sort of.

Around 18 months or so ago, I stopped collecting model airliners. Instead I’ve moved into the field of acquiring a few 1/18 and 1/24 scale diecast U.S cars. I’ve decided to settle on 1/24 scale, they take up less space. I don’t have too many yet, but I thought I’d show them anyway. All bar one are made by a company called Greenlight. The overall detailing and finish on these models is impressive. My all time favourite U.S car is the 1965 Buick Riviera. The other models are Plymouth Fury finished in various Police liveries, a Ford Crown Victoria (of course!) dressed in NYC cab colours, and a Dodge Monaco, hoping to get the Chicago Police version next.

Neil.

Congrats on these. There was a time when I collected 1:24 scale model cars, too. My collection consisted solely of American cars from the 50s-70s. The majority of the models I owned were produced by Danbury Mint (amazing quality and detail) with a few by Franklin Mint. Neither of them produce 1:24 scale any longer. As the story goes, the factory(ies) they used to produce their models didn't pay taxes so the Chinese government seized the moulds and closed the factory(ies).

Interesting that you posted this today, cos I was looking at Danbury Mint models on eBay yesterday.

Have fun collecting!!

Thanks. I don’t think these are in the same league as the likes of Franklin and Danbury models, they’re very nice indeed. But for the price, these Greenlight and Motormax products aren’t too bad. I also enjoyed putting together the 1/24 ‘diecast kits’ made by Maisto. Are you planning to start collecting Danbury Mint models again?

So, the Riv is a Motormax? They produce some great models. The Riv was always high on collector wish lists for Danbury to produce. I didn't own any by Motormax, but they produced a couple models I wanted. A Ford Maverick and a Ford Falcon come to mind.

I had considered buying a few Danbury Mint models of Ford Thunderbirds because some of them can still be had for a reasonable price, but I think I'll stick to just reminiscing.

The Riviera is in fact a Welly release. It was found by a good friend in Alabama. Despite its name, the Welly models are very underrated. New Ray models can vary a lot, I only have a couple of those.

I've heard of Welly but until just now I hadn't seen any of their models. I especially like their version of the Ford Capri, BMWs, and Bentley. Hee hee. Trans Am looks good. too!

Back in the 90’s along with Airplane models I was heavy into diecast police cars and buses mostly 1/43 scale having hundreds .. As I moved more into aviation I completely sold them all..today I only have 3-4 Smokey and the Bandit Trans Ams and a few Deloreans.
Here is my Greenlight version 1:64..

On a side note the Crown Victoria is all but dead here in the States as far as law enforcement and taxis are concerned. Funny in Orlando where I live, they are one of the few in the States that still have quite a few 2011 models left in their fleet..

I too find myself deep into the diecast auto world as well....started with MATCHBOX and Corgi back in the 1960's and have not let off the gas since...Greenlight, ERTL, MiniChamps, Danbury mint are all piled up in my man cave garage...here is a sampling of what lurks behind those roll-up doors.....

Wow, I had no idea so many members here have an interest in model car collecting. Good to know the Crown Victoria still survives. M404, I love those 1/18 models. I do have a few 1/18 models, a mixture of U.S, European and a couple of East European types as well. Pics coming.

Thanks Neil...I have quite a few 1/18 and 1/24 diecast models and am restraining myself from cluttering up your post with pics of my models. Those PD Dodges of yours look pretty good...don't recall seeing them before in US market. I have only a few Euro diecast models from Maisto and Jouef (and of course Dinky and Corgi)....had a TR4 in 1/18 a while ago but it went to high bidder and boy do I regret that I sold her...looking for her picture

A couple of 1/18 models, both Cold War era East European types.

The first is a 1972 Soviet made version of a Fiat 124 called a Lada 1200. I used to drive the 1600cc version. The second model is of the East German Wartburg 353 which had a 3 cylinder 997cc two stroke engine. My first car back in 1978 was a bright red Wartburg 353. I was the only guy in our crowd to have a brand new car, and it only cost me £750, cheaper than a Mini and just as durable.

So come on guys, let’s see some more pics

I'm loving the '60 Ranchero! My mum owned a '62 Falcon Futura so I have a fondness for Falcons or anything based on them. A buddy of mine owned a Nova like the model!

The Lada and Wartburg are cool. When I visited London in 2017, I was amazed at all the cool compact sized cars there that we don't have in the U.S.

Do you have any Sun Star or Road Signature models?

Neil your collection is awesome and you definitely need Trabant as well
https://www.google.com/search?q=trab...&bih=767&dpr=2

And about 1/18 diecast cars I own a few and actually bought three yes three 1/18 Shelby GT500 Eleanor by Shelby Collectibles. My dream car!! One of the cars has Caroll Shelby signature above the rear left wheel arch.

https://www.ebay.com/c/1524628402

You definitely need a very special Police car
https://diecastsociety.com/review-au...k-interceptor/

And a great resin manufacturer but really great models

I see one of those is an AutoArt model. They produced a beautiful 1967 Mustang GT.

Another wonderful 1:18 manufacturer is Acme, who acquired GMP's moulds. They produced some superb '60s Pontiac Firebirds and '70s Pontiac GTO models.

And if you really want some incredibly beautiful and detailed 1:24 scale models, Automodello produced some stunning models. I owned several of their Lincoln Mark II models. They're made of resin but incredible quality and very, very limited.

I have been a fan of the car from Christine since 1982 (When the movie came out) and have always wanted a model.

We came across a 1/18 scale with working headlights and another 1/18 model of Christine before she was bought by Arnie. LOVE these two.

Only have photos of the regular Christine since Aryelle does not want me to post photos of the other for fear someone will want to buy it.

Very nice Euro collection there Neil. I was hoping you would have a few to share here. Who is the best quality manufacturer of diecast cars in Europe/UK? Here are a few more pics of some of my collection of the 4 wheel variety...

I once owned both of those Danbury Mint models. Do you own more Thunderbirds? On the Bonneville, I had the Continental Kit removed. I liked it much better. Do you also have the stunning Bonneville hardtop?

Neil, love the Taunus, Citroëns and Volvo! I used to want a 1:1 Volvo P121.

Are either of you members of The Diecast Zone?

Thanks. Nice models. Love that Thunderbird. I have a yellow version, I think it’s an ERTL model. I’m sure I’ve also got a very nice Ford Edsel as well, not a popular car I’ve been told! My favourite 1/18 models are those made by Norev.

Not heard of the Diecast Zone myself, I’ll look it up.

Depends on who you ask. I've owned over a dozen 1:1 Edsels since 1995. (FYI, Edsel was its own brand/marque/line. It wasn't a Ford Edsel.) Most of the Edsels I've owned were 1958, but I have owned a '59 and two '60s. The most accurate Edsel model is the Ertl plastic model kit, but of diecast models, the Franklin Mint 1:24 Chalk Pink/Frost White and Turquoise/Frost White convertibles are the most accurate.

I love the Shelby and the Twister! I grew up in a FoMoCo family (my dad was a service & body shop manager for Daytona Lincoln-Mercury) so that's all we had in the driveway & garage.

I had a neighbor in the 70's that had a GT500....he knew what a car nut I had become so he frequently put up with me hanging around his garage and help him with the general care (cleaning and servicing) of this FoMoCo beauty! While I did not have to actually pay for the experience, it was my first experience at "quid-pro-quo" for lusts sake. Numerous high speed runs on the tollway were the payoff!

1/43 1964 Opel Diplomat V8. One of my favourite German cars. The two door coupe version is a stunner.

1/43 Lada Riva 1.5. I’m told that this car was also known as the Lada Nova in certain countries. A friend of mine found this model in a supermarket in Ukraine.

Usually buy models of Cars I have owned
now 1/18 also, which gets expensive eg BOS Opel Monza.will have to get the camera on them.
and would love to be able to obtain the Opel Manta 1/8 partwork, but so expensive to import from Germany.

My all time favourite, only the French could come up with such a beautiful car. In reality it was a joint effort with an Italian industrial designer Flaminio Bertoni, a French aeronautical designer Andre Lefebrve, and Paul Mages, who was responsible for the design of the DS’s unique suspension system.

This model is the pride of my car collection. Made in diecast by the French Norev company, this model is 1/12 scale. The detailing is phenomenal, and my pics in no way do it justice. I’ve included a 1/43 Citroen for comparison.

Using one of your photos, that’s quite an accolade! Nice models you’ve got there. I’m impressed with the Greenlight models, though one or two of them I’ve got, were hard to find over here.

Do either of you have the '67 Ford Andy Griffith / Mayberry RFD squad car? Johnny Lightning also produced a model of his '61 Ford squad car.

They actually do have the UPS and Fed Ex trucks but they are the local double trailer feeders. I am trying to concentrate more on the long haul stuff I see on the local Florida Interstates. Only exception I made was the Amazon no sleeper cab available and the Jeff Gordon truck which I am giving away to a diehard JG fan.

DARON has the trademark for both UPS and FedEx so they are readily available.
