Well, looks like we are going to find out what happened to Maverick during the past 30 years! Guessing he'll play the part of the Instructor this go around.

Hopefully Iceman will also be returning in the sequel. Val Kilmer's health has not been the best the past few years.

I am guessing he is going to be a check pilot or something that go's to senior military pilots. If accurate,no F-14's this time. Hornet's and F-22's I would imagine. He doesn't need the money,so I am guessing he likes the story. Which I hope mean's an OK movie. I bet he will have flashbacks to "Goose"?

If I was the writer for this movie my storyline would be the following:

1. Maverick has a long lost daughter; she shows up on his doorstep
2. Goose had a son, who is now a budding fighter pilot and is sent to Top Gun school; Goose's wife/widow is now shacked up with Iceman
3. Maverick is one of the instructors and takes Goose's son under his wing; feeling still guilty of what happened to Goose 30 years ago
4. Maverick's daughter hooks up with Gooses' son, much to the dismay of Maverick and Iceman
5. A conflict in the Middle East arises and both Maverick and Goose's son are sent to the area
6. The son of Goose is caught in the cross-hairs of a missile and is about to be obliterated to join his father
7. Maverick flies his F-22 into the path of the missile and sacrifices himself
8. At the funeral, Goose's son and Mav's daughter are at the cemetery along with Iceman and the widow
9. All four say their peace; Iceman throws a flower on the coffin and says 'You'll always be my Wing Man!'

There you go! Top Gun 2 above! Hee hee! T7 ( I feel the need; the need for Speed! )

Send it to Hollywood. They may like your script more. Copyright it of course. You will have more model money than you will know what to do with.

Just put Goose in the darn movie. Act like nothing ever happened...he never should have died in the first place.

I made up that script in 2 minutes; mind you I glossed over some sub-plots in the movie (strained relationship between Maverick and his daughter; Iceman's strained relationship with his step-son (Goose's son) because he's a carbon copy of Maverick from his young Top Gun days; the great bond between Goose's son and Maverick, etc..)

Would be a cool script I proposed, but I heard reports they are borrowing some of the plot line from a very, very, very horrendous jet fighter movie called 'Stealth'. Something to do with Drones. Oh well, good luck with that! T7

Well, Goose's demise in the first movie contributed to Maverick's downward spiral (no pun intended ) The movie then showed how he had to get to his lowest point and then take some steps to fight his way back to the Top. He made peace with himself, Goose and Iceman. Unfortunately, Goose had to bite the dust for the storyline to work.

I vividly remember the scene when Maverick goes to see Gooses widow after the accident. "He loved to fly with you. If something had happened to you,he would have kept flying" I think that is pretty close. We are talking 30 years ago,and a great deal more snow on the roof.

Pretty stupid to wait 30 years for a sequel. Cruise would be an admiral by this point if he was still in the Navy, no captain would be in for 37 years (the 7 years are for him to reach the rank of lieutenant from the start of his enlistment, plus fighter training). Obviously, this movie would have to take place 15 years ago to be credible if Cruise is going to be a grizzled instructor pilot. Dunno if I want to see it.

Funny you should mention that. My wife asked me earlier "what has Maverick been doing for 30 years?" Like I said earlier,it must be a great script, because Cruise doesn't need the money.

Problem here is... it's been 30 years... and very rarely do re-makes or part 2 story lines cut-it with audiences anymore. Star Wars is about the only one to achieve this and even then we rarely talk about 4,5,6 or is that now 1,2,3..?

Remember recent releases Ghostbusters and how it bombed..? The 2016 reboot of Ghostbusters earned less than one-quarter of the original's 1984 hit movie
Or howabout Conan the Barbarian reboot..?
Footloose anyone, or how-a-bout Robocop. Even worse was Zoolander 2

Bigger problem is today hollywood studios put out around 700+ movies per year, In the 1980s the number was in the low 400's.

A quick google search shows that original 1986 Top Gun only had to beat Crocodile Dundee to take the number one spot in 1986. Geez even Rodney Dangerfield's Back to School was in the top 10 in 1986... Ghostbusters 2016 only just got to spot 21...

While it's probable that us who were kids from the 1980s will go and watch Top Gun 2, will we watch it at the movies or on DVD or even download it from Netflix..? I don't think the kids of today will really bother tho.

What was for the time an amazing action film filled with death defying stunts made in the days before digital effects, which meant true blockbuster competition was rare due to the costs involved. Top Gun needed to pay the Pentagon to get realistic in-flight cinematography. Today, even independent films can be crammed with impressive action sequences. Hell even my daughters playstation 4 games are more realistic in many ways. Why pay to see something at you can interactively play at home for free?

Still.. producer Tom Cruise can spend his money however he likes. I'll go back to counting my 20cent pieces as I accrue the amount needed for my next purchase of a 1/400 model plane. Maybe Qantas this time..?

well if you're feeling nostalgic, there's always the 1/72 or 1/200 tsm model tomcats to add to your collection (sorry, no 1/400 scale)

I'm looking forward to this, Top Gun was the movie that got me into aviation. I'm not optimistic it'll be any good, but Cruise really doesn't swing and miss that often with his movies. Val Kilmer will need to lose a lot of weight and poor Kelly McGillis, what to say about her? Will she have been killed off? She looks pretty bad nowadays and her acting career seems to have tanked as well. I say bring back Goose too, or at least have another wacky character that takes his place, maybe reprise Tim Robbins as Merlin. He was a lot of fun. Mav: "I'm bringing him in closer Merlin" Merlin: "You're gonna do WHAT??"
The biggest question for me is...will that "hit the brakes and he'll fly right by" move work in a Super Hornet, which is Fly By Wire. Hmm...I think not. Mav will have to patent another go to maneuver. I also wonder if the Russians will still be flying that F-5 knockoff, the MiG-28...so many questions

Was it already pointed out that Maverick would not fly the F-22 but rather the F-35C?

I think it depends on how big a part Tom Cruise actually features in the movie. If it's a few scenes then yes can certainly see the audience not being interested. The last "military plane" movie I recall is Stealth and don't think that did particularly well even with Jessica Biel and Jamie Foxx

As for the Maverick character, not sure he would want to be Admiral. More likely retired running his own charter flight business or he's taken over Tom Skerritt's role aka "Viper"

Interesting no one mentioned Kelly McGillis... perhaps she turns up at the end of the film like Luke Skywalker did on The Force Awakens... although it would have been quite scary had Jar Jar Binks showed up instead

One thing to keep in mind about following up with a sequel; is that it is very rare to have the sequel come close or even exceed the original. However, I find the following movies to be the exception:

1. Aliens vs Alien - Aliens was just kick butt from start to finish; roller coaster ride from opening credits to the end. James Cameron please take a bow.

2. Terminator 2 vs Terminator - The visual effects/stunts at that time were just stunning! Again, James Cameron comes through again!

3. Star Trek 2 WOK vs Star Trek MP - Again being on a roller coaster or watching paint dry!

4. Superman 2 vs Superman - General Zod and his 2 Krypton buds seeks revenge on Christoper Reeve/Supes

5. GodFather Part 2 vs GodFather - this was a tough one; I found both to be excellent

6. There are a list of other movies, but just wanted to make my point with the above releases.

Then you have some serious box office bombs/duds for sequels:

1. Speed 2 vs Speed - Keeanu Reeves was smart to pass on the sequel

2. Independence Day 2 vs Independence Day - Will Smith did right to pass on this bomb. (20 years later this sequel was made from the 1996 release of the original)

3. Godfather Part 3 - Why did they just not stop with Part 2?

Plenty of more to list...

So I am hoping that the time difference of 30 years of the sequel will not harm Top Gun 2. T7

My bad.

I think the 'Empire Strikes Back' was an excellent sequel to 'Star Wars'! Never forget the line 'I am your Father'!

Yes a valid point, I think they have quite a challenge on their hands. We shall see assuming the film does get made.

The duo of Tom & Jerry Bruckheimer have both agreed to start filming in 2018. Jerry has stated that CGI effects will be used sparingly for the upcoming movie.

Just remembered that Tron Legacy was a sequel that was released 28 years since the original Tron movie. All I can say that Olivia Wilde in the sequel wearing that black outfit was mesmerizing.

I do strongly believe that Maverick's character should bite the dust in the end; this would be a great send-off and he can join 'Goose' in the here after. I think it would be one of the very few movies with Tom Cruise that his character actually dies.

Nah, it will truly be an embarrassment if it made "Hot Shots!" look like a 10x Academy Oscar winner

I am a big fan of Clint's movies; but this Firefox movie was a huge DUD! I guess every legendary actor puts out a stinker during their career. T7

I think Clint also directed or produced "Sully" Haven't seen it yet so can't comment if the movie is good or not.

Clint was the director of Sully. It received a 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes; which is pretty good IMO. I thought the movie was entertaining with Tom Hanks as Sully.

Folks, c'mon. Maverick's been freelancing for the IMF as Ethan Hunt over the past 30 years. No coincidence they look alike.

I agree that post also gave me a chuckle.

Tom has been very busy since his 1st movie back in 1981. He usually rolls out a new movie every year or so. He has about 46 actor credits/movies he's completed so far. He's a workaholic actor! Does not look like he's slowing down. He's playing another pilot for the movie 'American Made'; about a pilot working for the CIA as a drug runner.

Well, it looks like USA Today has 6 plots they would like to see in TG2, they included 1 with the son of Goose and another with Maverick's demise.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/...see/102407590/

A female pilot kicks*open the boy's club door
Top Gun was overwhelmingly white and male, summarized by*Iceman's (Val Kilmer) jab at Maverick: "The plaque for the alternates is down in the ladies' room." But this time around, Maverick is*the senior flight instructor dealing with a genius pilot who has a chip on*her*shoulder. The military has evolved, allowing*women to train*as fighter pilots since 1993. So, too, has Cruise, welcoming*strong female co-stars such as the sensational Emily Blunt, who knocked him around as*Rita*Vrataski in Edge of Tomorrow.*We need that spirit in the cockpit.

Maverick faces Goose's son
Carole Bradshaw (Meg Ryan) was heartbroken*but understanding*when her husband, radar*intercept officer Goose (Anthony Edwards), died ejecting from the jet. Maverick was cleared of wrongdoing in the incident. But Bradshaw's young son, glimpsed in happy family moments,*could understandably still blame the brilliant-but-once-reckless pilot for a life without his father. Maverick, still pained by Goose's death, must deal with the guilt resurfaced by the presence*of his now-grown and resentful offspring.

Russia pays for its hacking
The Russians weren't the main story line, but they*were the foe that fueled the Cold War-era original.*Sure enough,*Russia has re-emerged with*top villain status, worthy of a screen return. It's not just their meddling in the 2016 election, it's the global attitude. They have the ambition, the antagonism,*the*jets and swagger.
The*sequel could be ripped from the*2016 headline about the*Russian pilot who pulled a Top Gun-like barrel-roll stunt over a U.S. reconnaissance*plane, a maneuver stolen from Top Gun's*playbook. But in Maverick, this aggression spills over into a threat that*requires mobilization. Think payback Hollywood style.

Drones can serve as a faceless menace
The Internet is obsessed with the prospect of a drone story line*(though Cruise has dodged the question of whether unmanned flights will factor into the sequel). Are drones the next level of dogfighting? Maybe. But not without a last stand against*human-flown jets instructed and flown by Maverick. The drones can fly, but they need to be robotic*foes our pilots knock out of the sky. This time.

Maverick goes out in a blaze of glory
Goose's death provided the original movie's emotional punch, allowing for*the full triumph at the end. The only way to recapture*that resonance is if it's Maverick's final flight. He needs to go down heroically.
Maverick has matured and*succeeded in his dreams of becoming a*Top Gun*instructor. But in our*final conflict, the teacher*is forced back into the cockpit,*taking out foes with his young crew —*but giving*the greatest sacrifice of all to complete the mission. It's a fitting*end to the*character*arc, leaving fans*in tears and quashing*another 30 years of*Top Gun*sequel speculation.

The volleyball scene returns with a twist
Sure, it's a moonshot. But Cruise did say that this would be a "competition" film.*He didn't say what kind of competition (though he has suggested there might be a volleyball scene). It's time to reprise the iconic and oiled-up sandpit match.
Maverick would be wearing jeans (again), but now Wrangler Relaxed*Fit. His teammate would be Wrangler spokesman Brett Favre, with Tom Hanks toting his Wilson volleyball. Their foes: Three-time Olympic champs Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor. It's not pretty how this ends.

Hmm not a good idea imo, I don't see how this sequel which takes place 31 years later can be as good as the classic first Top Gun or even better, such movies never did well imo the past 31 odd what years., but we will have to see I guess.

Hee hee! T7 ( I feel the need; the need for Speed! )

Looks like my Number #2 is halfway there with the plot. However, I can't picture Meg Ryan as she looks today (plastic face) with Val Kilmer as a couple.

'Top Gun' sequel: Miles Teller cast as Goose's son opposite Tom Cruise

The one positive is Jerry Bruckheimer is going to be involved that might make a difference... however, Michael Mann was behind the Miami Vice movie and that didn't turn out so well.

So Val Kilmer is in this one huh.. Wow. I guess we should be thankful that Cruise's career took off gigantically after TG, and he wasn't desperate enough to do Part Deux in the 80s. We got 33 years of fond members before they "crash and burn" when this sequel hits my small screen.

So what? Gets you out of your house for a couple hours, you get to see some decent F-18 action, no Kelly McGillis, and it takes 10 bucks out of your pocket. Don't be such an HFT200, HFT200!

I agree with the following:

- gets you out of your house for a few hours = definitely a better and more immersive experience to see this movie on the big screen/possibly an IMAX screen

- decent F-18 action = based on some clips from the trailer, very impressive actual real life flight scenes from the F-18s and no CGI effects.

- no Kelly McGillis = she has not aged very well based on the photo link, and she is only 3 years older than Tom https://i0.heartyhosting.com/radaron...92%2C446&ssl=1 (actually she could have come back in the sequel and played Iceman's wife, since they do sort of resemble each other now! )

I actually missed out seeing Top Gun on the big screen when it was released many eons ago, but not this time with Maverick. Cheers! T7

I will watch this sequel for sure but i will still miss the Navy Grumman F-14 Tomcat from the original movie..

Don't really care about Kelly McGillis by the way, is she not dead? anyway we got Jennifer Connelly in this sequel and who can complain about great actor Ed Harris.. i just wish this movie was made a little sooner because all these actors & actress don't get any younger as we shall soon see with actress Jennifer Connelly, she's still hot but unfortunately she's starting to show her age..

I, too, am looking forward to seeing this movie. However, I always thought the film, "The Final Countdown", did more justice to showing off the F-14 than Top Gun. The Tomcats look great (as do the other Navy aircraft) in all their pre-low viz glory.

Producers should have contacted the iranian air force and rented Tomcats.
Then i would spare 10€ and take a chance.
