Default Cold/ hot temps affect models?

I recently moved and now have to have my collection and airport in the unheated/ non air conditioned space above the garage. I'm wondering does the extreame cold or hot affect diecast models like paint and such?

Humidity and heat are not good. Cold is not that big of an issue unless below freezing.

Anything 'oil based' will discolour with temperature changes as oil is naturally brown in colour. Therefore anything made of white or clear plastic may discolour, such as the inner box cradles of some models. However, as the models are diecast alloy and use acrylic paints, you shouldn't have to worry as these shouldn't deteriorate or discolour through temperature changes. Extreme heat may melt plastic wheels etc, but that would have to be very extreme!

I would think that extreme cold will make the models very brittle and fragile. So maybe let them set to room temperature before handing would be a good idea. Also, I don't think a humid and damp environment would be very good either.

well we used to have our own food business. after 24 years i packed it in and worked for one of my suppliers. they rented a double lock up garage. I kept all my 130+ models there. I had a handicapped son at home who could fly off the handle at any time. so obviously didn't want to risk them getting damaged. I had a big 16 x 8 chiller unit in there. in the summer it was 30 degrees plus a times with the heat from the compressor. in winter it was minus whatever. so one extreme to another over the year. in the few years I was there NONE of my models suffered any damage/cracking/paint fade. but maybe I was lucky. 90% were diecast. as said, direct sunlight would cause more damage. but hard to say if kept permanently in the cold they would suffer too much.

If they are stored where temperatures can exceed 130F the plastic in the models can warp and the cradles can stick to the models, damaging the tampo printing. Plus, the paper boxes will be damaged by humidity and possibly insects like roaches and silverfish. Zinc rot is not caused by heat, cold or humidity, but if the model already has this problem, it will accelerate it. Zinc rot is caused by impure metals contaminating the zinc alloy.

Extreme variations in temperature, from hot to cold to hot, like when shipping models by air, will cause the adhesive to lose some of it's characteristics, hence wings, stabs gear etc. may fall off.

Hello all. New member here. Apologies for digging up an old thread but i found a reply that describes a "virus" that destroyed my beloved CX 346 (I do not know the material it is made with, but it is the same one one can find in their shop).
The environment in which the 346 was parked is in a dark, humid room. rarely does the room see light, unless I turn the light on. one side of the model has been discoloured with brown stains (similar to the one described by Adrian) while the other side, facing the room, is not affected.
My question is, is there anyway I can remove this brown stain or is it a permanent marking on the fuselage?

Thank you.
