Default Codeshare question.

In my nearly 45 years of flying I have never encountered a situation like this.
For the first time ever, I booked a codeshared flight. The flight is United but operated by Air Canada. My question is, (foolish to some of you) which counter do I go to at the airport? I was told by some, United and others Air Canada. They are at opposite ends of the terminal and I really don't want to show up at the wrong one and be told to go to the other end of the terminal.
Any help is appreciated.

I had that problem a few years ago. We were booked United from YYZ to HNL via LAX. The flight from YYZ was operated by Air Canada....we did go to the United counter but were told since being operated by Air Canada we had to check in at the Air Canada counter. Like wise from LAX to HNL is was operated by Continental so we had to check back in at the Continental counter even though it was a United ticket. So to answer your question it should be the Air Canada counter.

Flight UA1234 operated by Air Canada, check-in at Air Canada counter!!

Always check in at the counter of the operating carrier!!

Exactly, check in with the airline that is flying the plane.
It can be confusing even for experienced flyers.

Thank you all for your replies, I knew asking here would set me straight.
I booked with Expedia and called them twice to ask and both times I was told to go to the United counter. Go figure.

As said go to the airline you are flying on not the one you booked through. Last year I booked through AA LAX-Munich but they codeshared the flights through BA. We checked in at the BA counter.
