In China and HK, they sell the dual sim version of this phone. Was thinking of upgrading from my Notes 4 to the S7, but then I noticed that I can either use the second (GSM) sim or the expanded memory card. Can't use both at the same time. On top of this, the base memory is only 32GB...so I passed. If it was 64GB, I would have upgraded.

Hoping the new Notes 6 will give us at least 64GB, and/or dual sim that can be used with the expanded memory card.

I've been too satisfied with the iPhone (currently own a 6) to consider changing to something else. And I'm not even an Apple junkie; I've never owned an iPad or an Apple laptop/desktop. But I'm loyal to their phones.

Interesting and very enlightening. Thank you for sharing that first hand experience. I agree with you on the Notes 6 request. Cheers! T7

That's cool you have pledged allegiance to your Apple phone!

I have a younger brother who is an Apple Junkie/Addict, Anything new from Apple he is on it. Whereas I am more into the Android universe (tablets, phone). But, my daughter has an Ipad2. Well, at least our family isn't biased to either Apple or Samsung! Cheers! T7

My first smartphone was an Android. The "Droid Pro" by Motorola. This was back in 2011, so it pales in comparison to current smartphones of course. I liked it at first, but it had some quirks and quickly got really buggy and slow. I got an iPhone 4s as soon as I was eligible for an upgrade, and never looked back. I gotta say though, I did like the BlackBerry-esque tactile keyboard of the Droid Pro. I could type faster than a mofo on it, completely error free and without looking. I'm so much slower on a touchscreen keyboard. But It's a small complaint. Overall I'm much happier with the sleekness and simplicity of modern, touchscreen-only phones.

I had series of droids with my last one being the S5. After the S5 I went to the iPhone. I'm not sold on everything Apple but I do like the iPhone. I've had a 6 for I guess a year and a half now and it still works like it was new. I always noticed my droids would slow down after the same time period.

Hhmmm. Maybe I should venture over into the 'dark side' and look into an Apple phone for the 2nd time. I had the Iphone3 many years back, so maybe it's time to check one out for the wifey. She is using the Oneplus1 right now.

We had to go thru some 'invite' system to get that One Plus 1. Bizzare way to get a phone.

I don't know how it is in Canada but I keep going to Best Buy for phones now. Last year, I got my wife a S6 and got a $250 gift card. I also got my mom and iPhone and got $200. Even when I got my iPhone 6 back when the 6 was about a month old they gave me $50.

I'm with AT&T and AT&T doesn't offer anything like that but Best Buy always seems to want to give you some money.

Interesting. I had the same issue with 2 droids before switching to iPhone a couple of years ago. They do seem to slow done after a year of use.

The iPhone has always been very reliable. I've had the 6 a year now and it runs like it was new. If you are part of the Apple system with iCloud, it's even better. I have an iMac, iPad Pro and Apple Watch and I like the way they all stay in sync through iCloud. Photos upload and storage on iCloud is also nice.

I'm considering switching to a 7 Plus when they come out later this year.

I currently have the S4 which I've owned since December 2013 and plan to trade up to the S7 soon.

All relevant and enlightening posts above. I would like to make sure that we don't set up any camps here = Apple vs Samsung, ! We do enough of that sparring over in the 1/200 section with JC vs IF, etc. So, let's all be cool here! Much appreciated. Cheers! T7

Well, you're only inviting that type of "sparring" by starting a thread of this nature... People are going to express their opinions and allegiance.

Yeah, you do have a point my collector friend.

That was not my intention, but just wanted to inform those DAC members who may be interested in looking for a new smartphone this year.

By the way, what are your thoughts about a 'model of the week' thread? You think that would be a knock down "battle royale"?

I started a thread over in the 1:1 section for Airline Quiz/contest. That didn't invite any opinions, but was rather fun and my way of giving back to the DAC.

Which I hadn't planned to do because I just got my S4 paid off a few months ago, but I read the Consumer Reports article on Monday and I thought maybe it is about time to upgrade.

That, and more nitpicking...

Yes, and I was quite surprised someone was able to get the answers correct so quickly!

Competition and options are always a good thing, and it gives more choices for the public to choose from ... so I'm all for that ... smartphones have become such a quality commodity these days that I don't really think you can go wrong either way ... comes down to preference of OSes and personally I'm an Apple loyalist so that ends this discussion.

However, I'm NOT sold on BIG phablet phones either! I still use my iPhone 5s and am SERIOUSLY considering upgrading to the new iPhone SE, which is still a 4" screen but with A9 processor and 12MP rear camera. Also the battery life issue seems to have been resolved, so I will have the best of all worlds at the 4" screen size - I honestly prefer the smaller form factor, which fits better in my pockets etc ... also they have reduced the price of the 64GB model to $499 which is WAY WAY cheaper than $849 for the iPhone 6s Plus (64GB).

Lastly, I prefer the design/look of the 5-series much more than the rounded 6-series ... not that that matters to most, but it does to me ...

Wow, $849? And I thought the price of the S7 was crazy at $669! ($779 for the Edge version.) They are making money hand over fist on these phones. It wasn't that long ago I still had my trusty LG flip-phone.

Haha! My flip-phone worked out fine for me until I started receiving texts from friends, etc. more frequently. It was difficult to text on/with. I finally gave it up in December 2013 after having it since October 2007.

When I switched from the iPad mini to the iPad Pro, I really got sold on the benefits of more screen space. I use the iPhone 6 while traveling to do emails and look at spreadsheets, so the "plus" with bigger screen looks like it will be more productive for me.

Excellent choice for her, based on the CR report above. Coming from a 'Droid' buff. T7

I Agree! You pulled that 'Razr' out of your pocket and "flip it open" when they were just rolled out that year = people all around would instantly stare at your 'communicator'! They would say = That's way too cool!! You just don't get that reaction anymore with today's smartphones

Ah. Fond memories of my black 'Razr' Hello Moto! T7

The galaxy is too big for me. The bigger is better craze doesn't really fly with me as I want a phone I can put in my front pocket. I've had both apple and android phones and I will be picking up an iphone SE when it comes out based almost purely on form factor alone.

Very cool on your part for going with the dimensions/design measurements. I miss that with that Razr, you hardly noticed/felt the thing in your pocket. Smaller than my wallet. Hello Moto! T7

I've had the first generation moto x for 3 years now and it is starting to noticeably slow down. I really like the phone but time for a new one.

I also had that Razr until I got my first blackberry years ago. Was probably the best flip phone I have ever had. My brother in law used his razr from 2006 as his personal cell phone until just a couple years ago when he finally replaced it with a smartphone. He did have a blackberry from work though for a few of those years.

OMG, the Razr...in the beginning all my cellphones were made by Motorola. Up until 2009 when I bought a Dell with what I thought was Android but turned out to be their own OS. Quickly switched to HTC...which was great!

After HTC, went on to Samsung and haven't looked back since. I like Samsung's address book, lets me write both their Chinese and English name, and everything is sorted together based on the pinyin alphabet. Don't like iPhone's address book....too simple.

These are not just cellphones. They are pocket computers. The phone function is only a small portion of what they are used for.

Hubby was eligible for an upgrade with Rogers (Our provider) and because Aryelle was having issues with her phone, he had her phone replaced with the new Samsung Edge 7.

It was a $0 upgrade too. She is quite pleased with the new phone.

I'm trying to decide between the regular S7 and the Edge. I need to visit a retail location this week to decide which is the best option for me. At this point, I don't know if the larger screen is that important to me and it's slightly more moola, too. And I'm uncertain if a phone cover will fit it. I'm also reading the LG G5 is a great phone, too.

We have seen several phone cases for the Edge7.

She had the LG G3 before, she liked it a lot but prefers the Samsung

I've had the iphone SE for 5 days now and don't regret getting it one bit. Form factor was the big reason for choosing it, but boy this thing flies and the battery life is great (~2 days of normals use between recharges).

Total disclaimer that I would not consider myself an apple fanboy. Up until now I have mostly had android devices.

My biggest concern about buying an iPhone (or any Apple product, like a laptop) is unavailability of certain apps and software. I once owned an Apple MacBook and I had a lot of difficulty with certain software not being available and I've heard the same problem exists for their phones. I had several problems with my MacBook, as well. The front edges of the bottom case started cracking and breaking off. Then, I had to replace the hard drive within 18 months of owning it, then the CD/DVD drive went out after two years. But in all fairness, it was a first gen MacBook and I assume Apple has improved product quality and longevity since then.

On the flip side, Apple products have several useful features such as iMessage and Photos (formerly iPhoto) which are far superior IMO to anything on a Samsung. I know many people who are left out of group messaging simply because they don't have an iPhone and texting off iMessage is far slower and less reliable. Furthermore, I recently tried to transfer photos from a Galaxy to a Mac and it was nearly impossible while an iPhone only takes on plug in.

Yup, there's always a trade-off or compromise no matter the product chosen.

I really like their Facetime app. Comes in handy overseas with my father. Also, great video app when my family are Face Timing with my brother's family in Bermuda. Cheers! T7

I'm on my 3rd iMac, I upgrade about every 5 years. This latest one is the 27" 5k. Each one has been very reliable.

I also run Parrallels with Windows 10 on my iMac, so I have no issues with software compatibility.
