Back in the 60s, we lived a couple of miles from the runway at Stansted EGSS. Being right under the flight path, we used to see the British Eagle Britts, Monarch ones, with their distinctive yellow bellies, BOAC VC10s, Ghana VC10s, Qantas 707s (quite why we saw those I don't know, or the Ghana 10 come to that) I seem to remember my Uncle, who at the time was working as an engineer with BOAC at Heathrow, telling me that the BOAC and Ghana VC10s, along with BOAC 707s, would often engage in crew training at Stansted, and it was BOAC which provided maintenance for the Qantas aircraft whilst at Heathrow. I'm guessing that maybe there was some post maintenance test flying which took place occasionally. I can remember being fascinated by the lowering of the u/c on the 10s and 707s, with all 'the opening and closing wheelwell doors during the process. We saw BEA Argosys, Vanguards, the occasional Trident, but never the Comets or Viscounts. Transmeridian, being a Stansted based airline along with Channel Airways, brought the first CL44s over the top, I was convinced it was a Britannia. All of this stuff would 'circuit bash' for hours, great fun for me, especially in the school holidays!

I can well remember seeing the first BOAC 747 rumbling over the top, what a sight at that time. Britannia Airways used to use Stansted for their crew training flights with their then new Boeing 737. I remember not having a clue what a 737 looked like. After some pestering on my part, I can remember my poor Dad phoning Stansted Airport to find out. No internet back then!

Here's a BEA card, same series by the look of it, that I also got via eBay.

I believe that is a Mini in the pic. The Moggy looked like this:

(edit - my bad, I misread as "had a Morris Minor...") oops

I remember going to Stansted back in the 1960's to see some recently arrived Air Canada Vanguards. Back then you could walk right up to them where they were parked. Unfortunately didn't have a camera then.
After British Eagle went bust, a friend of a friend got me and my dad on-board some Brittania's that were parked at Heathrow. Came away with in flight tray, cup and salt and pepper pots. My mum still has the condiments.
