For those of you unfamiliar with the Singaporean automotive legislation, you need to pay massive sums of money for licensing and certification fees. It's not uncommon for cars to cost twice the recommended retail price in Singapore. It's an all-new form of hell once your car becomes a decade old too.

Best of luck with the Merc.

I only got those wheels as they were the cheapest available at the store when the stock ones got damaged. But thank you anyway.

And yes, the rules on cars are insane. You need to bid for a certificate that lets you own a car for 10 years. In recent years, the cost of this certificate alone has hit S$60000-S$70000. Add another S$15000-S$20000 for the RRP of the car, coupled with 100% import tax and you have basic 1600cc cars costing almost S$100,000. Once those 10 years are up, you either have to get another one of these certificates, buy a new car, or as the locals say, settle for BMW - Bus, MRT (intra-city rail), Walk.

For reference: USD1 = SGD1.4, GBP1 = SGD2.1, EUR1 = SGD1.6, AUD1 = SGD1

Mercedes may be nice, but Nissan is MORE reliable

All Japanese cars in general have good & reliable engines period. And the best part is that they are not as expensive as the European luxury cars such as Mercedes Benz, BMW etc, etc... You just gotta love them Japanese...

I do agree, though I did have to replace the Engine in my 1991 Accord at 345,000 km.

Never again will I get a domestic vehicle.

I have to disagree. With proper maintenance and care, any well engineered and built vehicle would be reliable.

Absolutely.

Simple things such as changing the oil regularly and thoroughly washing the car (underneath the wheel arches too) on a regular basis can add years to a car.

I'd image Singaporean's are quite proud of their cars and dedicated to maintaining them?

Not true at all, it all depends on what car make & what engine it has period. Taking good care of your engine matters but if the engine was crap in the first place, it ain't gonna matter much if you take good care of it or not... You will always have problems no matter what you do...

Have you ever driven some American model car or truck made in the U.S, some might be good but some are also terrible from the very beginning, the engine & transmission can give you a lot of problems from the very beginning or down the road if you barely own it a few years or so... It's just that the engines are not made as good as your Japanese or European engines & it has nothing to do with taking good care of the engines, the fact is that they are not as reliable...

My first car was a 1989 Dodge Shadow. Nice looking car with nice equipment BUT the Head Cover gasket kept leaking and having to be replaced.

Tranny had to be rebuilt when the car was four years old and had 100,000 km on it, Brakes lasted all of 20,000 km, never bought another Chrysler after this one

Did you buy the car second hand or brand new?

You can't always blame a manufacturer for a bad experience in a pre-owned car.
Example: racer boys' thrash their WRX's and burn the engines out of them. When they put them up for sale, the new, unsuspecting owners have engine problems months later and blame Subaru.

The 1989 Dodge Shadow was BRAND new. 61 km on the odometer when we got it. Purchased and not leased. A week after we took delivery, the windshield wipers stopped working, still was a nice car though in spite of the problems. The dealership we got it from treated us like crap when we complained about issues with the Gasket cover so we took it to another dealership and they were nicer at that one.

My 2000 Dodge 'Chrysler' Intrepid was bought brand new also. Went thru three or maybe four windshield wiper motors in less than a year if I remember correctly. Not just that, other things too that made me get rid of it within a year. No more Dodge products for me.

Maybe it was a shady dealership and they wound the odometer back?

Sorry, ANY car can be a lemon. My daughter bought a brand-new Nissan Sentra that was nothing but problems out the gate. My mother-in-law had a 1989 BMW 6-series that was pure garbage. You just never know when you'll get a Friday car.

While we're on the topic of diesels, has anyone heard of the Sidewinder Project?

That's just awesome!

I've had 4 diesel powered pickups. 2 fords with the 7.3 V8 international engine and 2 of these cummins powered dodges. I definatly like the inline 6 set up better.

Off topic: the new diesels that are appearing in general aviation seem appealing. No longer have to adjust the mixture, less maintenance. TBO's are longer and the fact you don't loose power at higher altitudes is awesome. I'd really like to fly one of these Diesel GA planes and get a first hand opinion.

The Cummins Dodge is a bad-as* pulling mochine!

A man has to have a truck no?

Even if it's a baby truck… a 1993 Toyota X-tra Cab four wheel drive, all black.
The 3.0 V6 is a pain in the arse to work on. Threw a timing belt at 113,000 miles, but it was the tensioner pulley that seized up which was supposed to have been changed out when they did the timing belt at 50,000 miles at the Toyota dealership no less.

Luckily the 3.0 is a non interfering motor and the valves didn't bend, a good thing about Toyotas.

My daily driver is a 2008 Pontiac Vibe, a Toyota Matrix in disguise. Whereas I wouldn't have otherwise bought an out of business Pontiac, you can get them for good prices and you're really driving a Toyota with Pontiac emblems and GM trim.

Good choice from my experience so far. Like to move up to an all wheel drive GT, though the 2009 - on have a bigger 2.4 so less gas mileage.
Pontiac made an early Vibe GT with the 1.8 and all wheel drive. The one to get if you can find one.

Don't know if Toyota made the same versions in the Matrix. A little higher priced because of the brand I think.
