Default What's Your Career?

I apologize if this has been a topic before, I did not find anything in the search. I notice that some of you get to travel a lot, and it might be your job that allows you to do so. This is not a "how much do you make" thread, I don't care about that, but rather a "what do you do" thread, because I am interested in what others do, I like knowing what kind of jobs are out there as I am undecided on what I want to go into.

So...What is your Career? Why do you enjoy it, and what made you get into it?

Yep - avaition for me to.
Operations Control for QF.
If you like QF aircraft this is the place to be.
From Dash 8's to A380's, its a pretty interesting and exciting place to be and always something happening.
I sit infront of screen most days to watching the movements and making sure everything is running as it should. Also look after carriers like Air Nuigini, LAN, Qantas Link, Eastern,Atlas, Air China and the list goes on.
Its really interesting watching the old aircraft being retired and the new ones joining.
We said farewell to some 734',763 and 744's lately and watch them depart to Arizona etc. In the same week we said hello to a few new 738's and a A333 plus the odd A380 or so.
Everyone is preparing for the 787 now- but Jetstar are having all the fun which unfortunately we have very little to do with......

Would I want to be anywhere else - probably not.
Its great saying to my daughter when a QF plane flies over your head - thats my work!!

academic - mathematician.

what would I be/want to be if I am not a mathematician? not many jobs I could think of. I wish I was a musician, but it's too late now and I may not have the aptitude. Apart from that, running an airplane models shop would be cool .

I'm working in a hospital, at the radiology-department..
I work in a room with no windows and constant airconditioning for cooling the medical equipment...

So there are better jobs in the world then mine...
That is why, every time I come out of my 'box', I look into the sky and see those lovely aircraft...

But like Gosopdin says, it pays the bills...

Television, Senior Cameraman British Broadcasting Corporation. Been doing it nearly 20 years, loved imagery and stuff since schooldays, so went to college aged 17, did a media studies course and grew it from there. Been all over the world with the job, Olympic games coverage last year and looking forward to the 'hometown' Commonwealth Games next year in Glasgow, already rota'd onto that.

It is now legal for me to pour pints with adult supervision, so I work 4 hours for £25 (I'm 12)

G'day,

Started off as a TV producer working in the Comedy Industry, worked my way up to manager of a Production Company and now Proudly President of a Media/Communications Company and Television Station in Melbourne, Australia.

Reason for the aviation bug: First Flight at 4yo, Flew over the Antarctica in 1978 age 14, round the world trips etc, plus started collecting model planes at 7yo, now have over 3,000 of the freaking things! D'oh.

Cheers Lou

Nice start to a career in the family business, Kris. I say keep up the good work.

If any adult in the U.S. 'supervised' a kid pouring pints, they would be thrown in jail or lose their kid to the state!

Manufacturing Engineer in a high volume machining facility. If you own an american made vehicle be it foreign Toyota, Honda, Nissan etc. Chances are your drive shafts came from us!
Aerospace wise, we do quite a bit of work for Lockheed Martin just down the road from our plant. Some "hush hush" components for nuclear subs I cannot talk about. We have an area where cell phones with cameras which are pretty much all phones, are prohibited. This would be the submarine parts. I could go on and on. We machine quite an array of products.

After serving in the military, I continued to serve my country in a special post by scanning flight manifests and red flagging passengers who after investigation, were deemed undesirable or a threat to the country security.
Back then we didn't have the internet so I would communicate with many different countries' foreign affairs and security departments via their embassies or consulates. Anyone that was deemed as undesirable was detained and sent back or arrested. We were harshly criticized for these practices back then. Funny how 9/11 made many countries worldwide adopt these same procedures.

Air Traffic Controller -- center

The shift work sucks - especially the rotating shifts as you usually have at least one quick turn if not two per week and working holidays...but the pros far outweigh the cons. IMO, it's the best job in the federal government.

You guys have some cool and interesting jobs! Right now, being 20, I am a sales team member at Toys R Us. (Yeah, I know, but it's an enjoyable job).

My dream was always (and still is) to be a commercial pilot, but that cannot be made possible anymore. I wanted to go into the Air Force and fly...but when I was 14 I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, so that killed that dream for good. I can still get a Class 3 Private license (which I am still wanting to do), but can't go as far as being a commercial pilot.

I got to thinking about some other job at an airport, maybe an ATC, but don't know what college courses are required. Does anyone have any idea? Keep the jobs coming as well, it's interesting hearing the details of what you guys do!

Sorry to hear about your diabetes. ATC requires a Class II medical. If you can get that then you can look into it. It's a very long, drawn out process to get hired, though right now especially with sequestration.

..... Right now I'm a disabled retired unemployed village idiot.

..... But I've been:
  • 22 years in the Navy (21 in US Navy, 1 in Canadian Navy)
  • locomotive engineer (driver if you prefer) for Penn Central/Conrail
  • tour guide in Hong Kong
  • medical lab, audiometric and pharmacy technician at various times
  • customer service in stores
  • semi-pro and pro hockey player (that ended ugly with injuries )
..... I've traveled extensively and have set foot on every continent (the last one was done when I spent two months at McMurdo Station, Antarctica). The closest to being in aviation was aboard two aircraft carriers.

..... And that's all I have to say about that.

Almost 30 years as a civil servant of the People of Ohio.
I started out as a statistician ... Labor statistics ... Interesting stuff.
Next ... About 10 years as a graphic artist / publications editor / desktop publishing ...
Next ... Another 10 years as a programmer / desktop support (the good old days ...)
The current almost 10 years as a programmer / database analyst ...

It has been an interesting path ...

I despise the way certain elements of the now public look down on civil service.
Some of the stereotypes of civil service were true when I started in the mid-1980's ...
But are no longer true (that I see) ...
We were fortunate to have had a Governor that told us we were "going to do more with less ..." ... And he made it happen ...
(Thank you Governor George Voinovich) ...
And it must be said, he was a Republican and I am a very liberal Democrat.
For better or worse ...

Buddy

Communication Designer / Owner of Design Firm

For the last 10 years now, I've been running my own Communication Design firm helping small and home-based business owners tighten up their brand image so they can access more lucrative prospects. I've spend over 35 years in the design business, starting with a 20+ year career in the advertising agency world. Funny, I fell back on this, as when I was a kid in Grade 8 I was asked by the Guidance Counsellor what I wanted to be in life and I said 'airline pilot', as I was already obsessed with aircraft. "Sorry kid, your math marks suck and you wear glasses". And that was the beginning of my airplane model making days and I don't wear glasses today.

I work at Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing USA in Maryville, Missouri.

I used to work in diecasting, but now I work the assembly line, my job involves putting an o ring on the oil tube, putting the oil tube in and bolting it, then get the joint partially threaded by hand then drive it in with the joint driver, then dipping the bottom of the oil filter in motor oil, screwing it to the joint and using a torque wrench to tighten it. Lastly I install the charge coil, and screw it down.
Ohh yeah, and I do all that in a cycle time of 60 seconds. We do about 400 engines per day.

Just recently clocked up 25 years in the Royal Australian Air Force - Aeronautical Engineer. Currently managing Aviation Safety Training for Defence Aviation (i.e. teaching Aviation Safety Management Systems, Aviation Risk Management and Aircraft Crash Investigation techniques to aviators of all three Australian Military Services), have previously been the PC9 Engineering Manager and B300 Weapon Systems Manager, but my favourite time was 10 years hands-on working on F-111s and 5 years on F/A-18 Hornets.

Don't know how good you are with mechanical stuff, but you can always become a airline mechanic. Or you can church it up and call yourself a Aviation Maintenance Technician. That way your hands on the plane. You'll know the ins and outs of the plane. It can be a very interesting job also. I travel anywhere my companies flies to, to fix the planes if needed. You can get taxi qualified and taxi them. You can get engine run qualified to do engine runs. Nothing like running a 777 right at takeoff power. The pays good along with decent benefits. Or you can get into the avionics side of aviation. The dept I work in we pretty much do all of it except composites. Might be worth looking into if you want to be around planes and an airport. If you got any questions just PM me and I'll give you any info you need or want.

Medical Laboratory Technician for Clinical Pathology Laboratories.

I was a Surveyor for 23 years and now retired. I was in the police academy for a couple of months until I blew two disks in my lower back. So now I am in the medical field.

That was my former profession, my father & I had our own business on the Gold Coast (also known as God's waiting room). When people asked me what I did for a living, I always used to tell them that I was a "celestial travel agent". We sold the business a few years ago & now I am retired.
