I have about a day to kill here in DC and I was wondering if anyone knows of any model stores in the area. I couldn't find much from a google search other than that there is/was something called 'Airplane Superstore' at dulles airport. Does anyone know if it is still open? if so, is it before security? Thanks.

It was in '02 when I visited the Airplane Superstore at Dulles and that visit got me started in the hobby. But they left about eight years ago and relocated in Windermere, Fl. Best bet is the Air and Space Museum store.

The best place for models is still online. Brick and mortar stores only carry a limited selection of product and I find most are a waste of time to go to.

Which stores? The ones I have been to usually have a fairly good selection. An excellent example is Grayland Station in Chicago. There are models shoved into every nook and cranny there- I spent 4 hours digging through models, many of which were rather hard to find.

When I was at the air and space museum store, they had some old gemini jets. Didn't buy any though; models selling on ebay at $10 were listed for upwards of $30. No way, just buy online. I've never found a good deal in a brick and mortar shop.

I actually went to the Air and Space museum this afternoon. It was an awesome museum, and it took me nearly 2 hours to look at everything. I saw the same thing as airport1-600 did; the models were horribly overpriced. They had 3 different Gemini models (1:400) a USAir 767-200, a Delta widget 767-300, and a UNITED (nc) 767-300WL. They were all priced at $42, which is awful for easy-to-find 1:400s. Also, I saw a hogan Air Force One that they were asking $52 for!! VERY overpriced.

The USAir and Delta 767's were there when I went in 2009. At that price, they might be the same ones. To the general public, they just look like VERY overpriced toys.

Which is why most of the museum stores I've been too have a very limited selection of overpriced older models. Every once and a while you may time a visit during a clearance sale.
I was just in DC on Wednesday. Took a trip to the Air & Space out by Dulles. All there was (in terms of GeminiJets) was a new colors Delta 767-300W for $42 Their glass case of models was very misleading They had quite a few Skymarks models and some other (expensive) wooden models. I loved the museum (spent 3 1/2 hours in there), but was a little disappointed with the store. The Air & Space museum in the National Mall had a little more variety in the store, but the museum itself just isn't as impressive (but their NWA 747 nose section is pretty sweet).
The best thing about the two Smithsonian Air and Space Museums are the extensive aircraft collections and fact that they are free - probably the only city in the country where the museums are 'free' (your taxes do support them), and the array of museums on and around the mall rival any in the world, and again, the price is right. However, you will pay $18 for parking at the Udvar Hazy Air and Space museum out at Dulles airport. There are some bargains in aircraft books, especially at the Air and Space on the mall, but the scale models and die casts are outrageous. Tupi is right - go the the usual web stores for the diecasts. Later, Doug

Agree 100% with the others. I went back in February, and had a wonderful time at the Air & Space. I did buy a book in the store, but I did not buy any models, as they were outrageously priced and were nothing too exciting.

Whether it's a museum or an airline employee store at the airport, the only way to receive a discount when purchasing models, etc. is to be a member or airline employee. The discount will bring the model to a more reasonable price. The AA DFW employee store had the newest Gemini AA 747-100 priced at $56.00 before the discount. I didn't bother asking what the discount was because I didn't want the model. Instead, I bought some apparel which included:
