Default Le Tour De France

Is anyone following it?
It was the team time trial today which Team Orica Greenedge won, and Gerrens is currently in yellow.

My favourite team AG2R La Mondiale* were as awful as ever!

* - I like them because try as they might (and boy do they try!), they rarely ever seem to win anything on the TdF (which can also be frustrating at times). I personally just want them to win a stage.... Anything!.... (The last TdF stage win they had was a single stage in 2010, and before then, 2 stage wins in 2008 and them coming 4th over all in the team standings in 2009).

Also they have different colours to everyone else (White blue and brown, which consistently, over the years has been regarded by many as being the worst team colours on Le Tour, especially for the brown, but I don't care, because its the perfect foil to the gaudy colours of many of the other teams, so you can spot them a mile off because they are so.... Ordinary looking! ).

That said, at the other extreme to AG2R, Team Lampre today in the Time Trial were positively retina burning, FFS you needed sunglas... a welder's mask just to look at them!!

They are luminous pink!!

After all that has happened, its more likely he'd be shot at, rather than given a shot!

Anyway, on stages 1,2 and 3 of this year's Tour, they were in Corsica for the first time ever*, and, well, it wouldn't surprise me if tourism suddenly goes through the roof there, it looked gorgeous!!

* - Apparently the logistics of it are such that they have never even tried before.

Saw highlights of the first 2 days but due to work, haven't seen anything else. As always, I will be rooting for the British boys, David Millar and Chris Froome as well as the Manx lad, Mark Cavendish. I don't follow any team in particular.

Well, you will be glad to know that, with the backdrop of a large crash behind him on the final straight, Cav won the stage in Marseille yesterday with one of his usual 'Manx Missile' performances in the last few hundred years.

Personally, with the breakaway, I was hoping that the two Europecar guys, Reza and Arishiro went all the way, but they were predictably swallowed up in the last few KMs.
In a predominantly white peleton, both Reza and Arishiro stand out from the crowd - A big black guy and a Japanese.... Japanman(?), I'd love to see a lot more ethnic diversity, but I doubt it'll happen soon.

Maybe that's why I like AG2R, I like to route for the underdogs. Incidentally, the crash on the final straight claimed the team's Maxime Bouet (number 83), who is now out of the race due to injuries. When I saw him just sitting on the road making no attempt to get up, I knew it wasn't a good sign. Dumoulin did come 11th though.

Annyway, in today's TdF, Orica Greenedge's Daryl Impey became the very first South African to wear the Yellow Jersey!!

Today, on stage 7, Peter Sagan won the stage, but South Africa's Daryl Impey has held on to the Yellow Jersey.

In other news, Blel Kadri of AG2R actually won the Climber's Polka Dot Jersey today, which is brilliant!! I doubt he'll keep it tomorrow, but hey, its still better than nothing.

Seriously, they should re-instate him. Did he cheat? Absolutely! Does EVERYBODY cheat in cycling? Absolutely! All he did was cheat better than the other cheaters cheated.

Problem is that Pharmstrong really took the pi*s with it though.

To be fair, in the past, it was all part of it - back in the early days, the stages were so long that people often needed a little 'pick me up', and it just continued after that, the stages got shorter, but it had become entrenched. If you wanted to win you had to take something, and people openly took things, Jaques Anquteil (spelling) in the '50s and '60s for example.
That was in the past though, this is now and we can do better than that. I hope we have turned a corner with it now, especially with no nonsense characters like Wiggo (who is injured currently incidentally) and teams like Sky, but I imagine there will always be a handful of idiots who try it.

Personally, yes, ok, bring him back, but only if we can be 100% sure he's 'clean', it would be interesting to see how well he compares to everyone else now!
..... Either that or drug him up to the eyeballs and just watch him go, WEEEEEEEEE!!

'Don't worry Lance, we'll pick you up when you get to Spain!'

The interesting thing to me about any athlete taking performance enhancing drugs is that from the spectator's point of view, it never makes the sport better. Cycling is a great sport without cheaters and so is my favorite sport baseball. It's the selfish athlete that ruins it for others. Of course, even as bystanders we all contribute to the mystique of the superstar and then athletes fall prey to the allure. I am with you Roarer, I hope all sports turn the corner and clean up, but there will always be a few.

We need more wacky but quite brilliant eccentrics like Graeme Obree, powered by nothing but enormous jam/marmalade sandwiches and marzipan on his home made bike!!

He was on a professional team in 1995, albeit very briefly, as he refused to tow the drugs line. That said, he was/is a troubled soul, so its debatable how long he would have lasted anyway, but seeing him go up against his (then) arch 1 hour world time speed record rival Chris Boardman would have been nice to see!

Fellow cyclist Sir Chris Hoy comments: "Graeme is a genius in the true sense of the word. His uncanny ability to tackle problems from an angle that no-one else could have thought of, makes him a one-off. An original. He sees the world in a different way to us mere mortals and comes up with ideas and solutions which make you laugh, shake your head and say 'why didn't I think of that?!'"
An individual beyond reproach, an innovator, an incredible athlete with an indestructible determination are just some of the elements of Graeme's character. To understand the rest you really need to hear it from the man himself - Graeme is a brilliant speaker with a truly captivating story.

Even a lot of Brits don't know who he is, which is a shame:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graeme_Obree

He's currently trying this.... on a home made bike, of course:

Team Sky's Chris Froome has just won today's stage and the yellow Jersey.

The Brit (he was actually born in Kenya and represented them originally, so if he wins the tour, then technically he would be the first African winner IIRC), who was Wiggins's second in command last year now has a sizeable time lead over everyone else, including his team mate Porte who came second.... 51 seconds down.

Sky team has dealt a massive blow with Froome and Porte in 1st and 2nd overall at the end of the 8th stage at Ax - 3 Domaines, the herd has been seriously thinned down.
When are Cadel Evans, Andy Schleck, and eventual contenders going to reply ? They are already 4 minutes late !
While Marion bartoli wins Wimbledon ladies final.
Great news.

After yesterday's exploits, Team Sky seemed to be knackered.... except for Chris Froome.

He was up there at the front without his team, and any of the other teams could have taken him to the cleaners. 1 man against the Peleton. And yet, to his credit, he did what he had to do and made sure he still had a good lead despite loosing time.
He didn't panic, he didn't make any rash decisions, he just sat behind everyone else waiting for his main rivals to try and get away from him. He made sure they didn't.
He didn't win the stage by any stretch of the imagination, but tonight he is still in yellow once more, with no thanks to anyone but himself!

Anyway, Ireland's Dan Martin won the stage for Team Garmin!
