Question Opinions wanted: Do you think we're alone in the Universe?

After seeing a lot of good science programs over holiday break, I was really intrigued about where we are as a race in the Galaxy, Universe, cosmos, etc. It's my understanding that we're all made of the same ingredients as Stars, so how probable do you think there are other life forms (self aware, sensioned, and non-sensioned), in other Galaxies?
For me, I don't believe we're alone on both counts. This is just my opinion, so no hating please.
Where do you fellow DAC'ers weigh in?

That's an interesting subject for sure. I am not sure, but I do believe we may not be the only forms of life in this Universe. There is so much out there we haven't even seen it does seem improbable that we are the only life.

But until we have a federation, and a large fleet of intergalactic star ships with fusion cores, and the ability to travel for long distances at warp 9.6 we may never know. Just like how we will never know how many licks it takes to get the center of a tootsie pop.

Engage!

I'd like to think that out of the billions of planets in the galaxy (and most scientists believe planets outnumber the stars) there are other species of sentient life pondering that same question. Maybe there's even an ET version of the Prime Directive and that's why for the most part we've been left alone. I say "for the most part" because there sure are a lot of unexplained UFO and "Ancient Alien" events. One reason I enjoy "Star Trek" and the rest of that genre is that it makes for a hopeful future, where humans get their shtuff together and start exploring the stars. You and I won't be around for it, but maybe someday our great-great-great-grandkids will be attending a Starfleet Academy.

Yup ... just us Earthlings™ here on this little primitive planet in this solar system within our galaxy within our Universe ... there simply cannot be any other reasonable possibility!

Some interesting films investigate this. One was with Jodie Foster called "Contact". So many coincidences from the Maya, Egyptian, American Indian, etc., have made illustration references to flying vehicles, astronauts, etc in the far past. I would like to believe the human race will evolve enough to reach other livable planets (and live in peace), before the Sun goes Supernova...well..mini-nova as it is a small star.

I didn't create a poll; just an open dialogue. It's kinda cool to think our toy airplanes come from a supernova.

Ah yes, but the prices are ASTRONOMICAL!

Interesting topic. I believe we can't be the only life forms in the Universe. It's just too big and too unexplored to be able to say "we're the only ones".

I can't say I've ever had any UFO type experiences, but I certainly can't say I don't think its possible that there's other life out there.

It's a matter of speculation, either way. Astronomers do seem to be finding planets that are Earth-like in some characteristics, so that maybe helps.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were something living somewhere. It could just be bacteria-like, which would be very hard for us to detect unless it were in our own solar system. But even bacteria would still be fascinating, given that we still have not come up with a complete scientific theory to explain how life came to exist on Earth in the first place - there are some ideas, and some interesting experiments have been done, but there is still a long way to go.

The boxes clearly state they are NOT toys.

Back on topic -- there is no way we are not alone. We just haven't been discovered . . . at least during our life time.

or have we????

If we are alone then what a waste!!

One thing that annoys me about a lot of these scientific programmes is that they always go on about how we need to find water as only life can survive with it.

....ONLY LIFE AS WE KNOW IT!! (Jim)

Who knows what could be out there!!

On a similar vein, people say that we couldn't possibly have been visited by Aliens as they are too far away to have reached us yet.

These predictions are made on what we know about physics and technology, but, hey, I do hope that these faster than the speed of light readings recorded in Italy recently really ARE correct, as it will just show how much all these so called 'Experts' really know about it!

If Aliens really have visited us, they must be pissing themselves laughing at our complete Earthling stupidity, like this, one of the classic Smash adverts :

Cadbury Smash Mashed Potatoes - YouTube

As I remenber, Smash tasted truly awful however.

From a statistical view our planet shouldn't be alone with inhabited life. As posted there are billions of other star systems. Hard to envisage there isn't another earth like planet.

However the important question hasn't been asked. Is intersellar space travel possible? Do the laws of physics dictate it will always take years perhaps centuries to go to another solar system? It is accepted our sun will explode one day and the earth will be gone Presumably extinction of the human race will occur unless somehow we can leave and inhabit other planetary systems.

Yes, I think it's out of the question for humans to travel to another solar system; it would simply take too long.

And yes, if nothing else, the progression of our sun will eventually end life on earth. We've got plenty of time until then, though.

That is what I was saying about the faster than the speed of light readings. If true, and we somehow had the technology to utilise it (and can survive the speed of course), then, who knows what we could do and, who knows what Alien civilisations have done if some UFOs really are genuine.

Of course, who can ever answer that until it has been proven to be more than just science fiction/quackery??

Incidentally, regarding faster than speed of light travel, they got similar results somewhere in the U.S in the mid '80s, but they could never say whether it was genuine as the equipment used wasn't as sensitive, meaning that they couldn't examine it properly.

Unfortunately, I think the sceptics will be proven right, but wouldn't it be so cool if it actually were true??

Of course we aren't alone, I mean, the supermarkets seem to think that self service automated checkouts (which don't work properly) are a good idea.

Whoever came up with that clearly IS from another planet!

Yes, it is commonly called "customer service ALIENATION", so I guess it is fair to say that we are being influenced by forces from another planet.

I think that there is another planet out there with beings similar to us, I just think that it is the same thing for them: They do not know we exist, and we do not know they exist. I don't think that there are little green aliens that fly saucers, but somewhere there are other "Human-Like" beings out there. Why not? There is an "earth-like" planet that is "confirmed" to sustain life.

I know for a fact that there are over billions of star systems in our galaxy and the fact that there a billions of galxays clusterd just forming a small peice of the universe. The fact that there is no other life oxygen, silicon or hydrogen based is completley impossble the odds are there should be a few thousand other plants that hold some type of lifeform just in the milky way. Keplar 22B for instance might have a potential to hold life.

I'm totally into UFO's, Area 51 and all these space programs and documentaries and judging by the number of solar systems, galaxies and the size of the universe, if you're going to tell me that we're the only ones out there, you're wrong because we're not, I'm convinced of it.

People used to believe the earth was the center of the universe, until some brave souls challenged that notion.

They recently discovered a form of water on the moon, why that isn't bigger news I don't know.

People resist things they don't understand. My parents did not trust microwave ovens for the longest time.

There is life out there somewhere. There's probably simple life in our own solar system. Right now all of this is beyond our technical reach. Obviously the space programs of the world feel it's worth searching for.

Somewhere I read or heard this words

"If we where alone..that would be a lot of wasted space"

I do believe that we are not alone.. and they could have been visiting us and studying us like now, as what we do with other organisms.

The frightening question is what will happen to humanity if we discovered something or we have been discovered? Will it be a progress of the human species or it's extinction.

History will remind us want has happened to less advance civilizations, when they have been discovered by explorers looking for resources...

Imagine what will happen to humans... being colonized,...forced to slavery to do there will..or to be exterminated....

well, it's been a few months, and I think it has been confirmed that the sceptical view was correct; the neutrinos were not going faster than the speed of light. there was some error in the measurement.

physics as we know it survives.

Doing a little anniversary digging here? I have to say, I'm pretty angry the aliens didn't stop to pick me up on Dec. 21st. Dammit, the directions were pretty clear--take a right at Pluto, a sharp left at Jupiter then straight on past our moon. Must have gotten lost, took a left at Albuquerque or something.

I still can't get my head around the universe being a virtual example of infinity. How could something go on forever without actually reaching an end or a start!?
With that in mind - that pretty much means no limits to what is possible out there. Somewhere, something exists - whethers its ancestors of life on earth or its an independant existence - surely the odds of us being alone is absurd.

Do I believe in UFO's and regular visits.....there must be something to it as there are too many credible sources and witness's to not discount it.....

...but still no concrete proof!! Only blurred/out-of-focus images, 'witness reports' and still no hard evidence that can be touched and evaluated as not being from this earth.
