Default Chrome effect on plastic

Hey all, I'm a big fan of making my own models and creating customs, I'm trying to create a chrome metal effect on one of my models (delta widget 727). Ive read some things about using special foil, does anyone know a good product to use? and where to buy it on the net? Bearing in mind I'm in the UK.
Any help on how to use it too would be appreciated! I read about using cocktail sticks and sharp exacto knives to get the shape etc.. cheers guys!

Istari, I would recommend what's called, 'Bright chrome foil' if you want the perfect look. Personally, I favor foil over chrome paint. However, since there will painting of the fuselage with white to show the Delta m arkings, I would recommend using an airbrush with a mixture of chrome silver. I think there's even a paint known as aclad but I'm not sure, hopefully someone can answer for that. Whatever is used, those paints deliver a perfect metal finish. Good luck on the model!

I'm not sure I'm comfortable using an airbrush yet, I've never used one before and I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing, any info on that from the professionals on here would be great! But i think its best i stick with using the foil for the time being, bright chrome foil you say?

I use silver spray paint. There are some priced a little higher, but have high luminance.

naw anything in the can wont cut it. the best is alclad II chrome. its expensive at almost $8 a tiny bottle but well worth it and nothing else compares unless you use that foil tape but that does not give a smooth finish unless you do it right, especially around areas like the nose that youll need to wrap. if it looks good to the eye, take a camera and photograph it, the camera will reveal all the faults. if you dont mind this aspect go for the foil tape.

airbrush is bonehead to use. set it at 15psi and spray. alclad is forgiving.

i have some chrome models under wraps but heres what ive done in the past with alclad. spray bottles have never come close to the smoothness of finish and mirror effect in my experience. and some spray bottle chromes will dull when you apply a clear coat...image that.

my models were never buffed out. but if you buff the model out you can get some insane mirroring. check out their site: http://www.alclad2.com/

1:200 skymarks AA komen

1:200 eva air bare metal prefactory paint

heres one from airlinercafe that did an excellent job with standard kitchen foil (not my model). super smooth finish but you can still see small smudges and tarnishing

The foils are tricky to use and you need to have some experience before doing this. I have used 'Bare Metal' foil on plastic kits but only for small areas and it looks good. Large areas are really difficult because you are going to get creases and they cannot be removed. In addition, and 3-D curves will result in creases. Alclad II is great and I recommend it. It's user-friendly but has to be airbrushed. They have a polished chromium finish which looks good but first you have to spray gloss black. This must be very shiny and smooth; the shinier and the smoother, the shinier will be the chrome finish. Then spray the chrome. It isn't as bright as real chrome and I think it looks quite realistic and does look like metal. With Alclad II, you can spray different tints of metal finishes as well. Recommended.

Bare metal foil is my preference.
Apply it gently with tweezers into the areas but ensure you have some overlap which can be trimmed off later. Just burnish the foil onto the model with a toothpick (use wood not metal) and the foil takes on different shades of polished effects. Black chrome foil is another good product.
One way to stop creases is to rub the foil down with a icecream stick that has the end cut into a wedge shape and this tends to flatten all the areas. Worst case if you get creases, simply lift it off and start again. I've used foil on many of my 72scale kits with excellent results and effects. I'm going to use it to cover my 72scale B-58 Hustler which has lots of big areas.

I'm still yet to give the foil a shot, but i did find some "Brush 'n Leaf" Silver paint at my local craft shop, and I've gotten surprisingly good results, its oil based but gives a much better result than any silver metallic paint that I've used (guessing Alclad would still be better than this though). Ill be ordering some foil for one of my next projects though.
