Default Brad Shinn British Airways Concorde

Hi,

Here is the start...(again) of the 1/72 Airfix Concorde. G-BOAC will be sporting the last BA livery flown by the Concorde. British Airways consider Alpha Charlie as the flagship of their Concorde fleet as it carries the letters 'BOAC' . She's the first Concorde in the BA fleet and her maidan flight was on my Birthday Feb-27th.

Regards,
Brad

I look forward to seeing that large Concorde finished. I'll send a picture of a Doyusha 1/200 Concorde I built though still needs work. I have it in the Landor scheme, which I like best on Concorde jets. While building the kit, it was noticed that the fuselage was of the prototype and that the nose was not as thin as the latest aircraft built were. I had to modify also the exhaust panels of the engines since it seems they look larger than of the prototype. Good luck on the kit Brad!

Will you build the working nose-drooping mechanism? I've heard it's almost impossible to get it to work, due to being molded in the same brittle clear plastic as the windshield.

Hi David,
I have yet to see a working nose/visor that doe not look like a cheap Corgi suppository....I'll see what I can do if possible. More likely she will be at 5 or 12 degree angle. I will also make the visor smaller so it may sit properly on the wind screen.

Thanks Brad for the response, sounds like a lot of modifications too on the Airfix mold. Currently, I'm putting black decal lines on the edges of the wings and will attempt to give the look of the 'broken line' look with cuts in the decals. In otherwords, if given a close up look of the real Concordes, there are all of those dotted lines when looking at the wing surfaces. I noticed in the latest BA livery that the black lines were more of grey than black. Also, I noticed that on the top of the wing that there was a section that is outlined in markings which I will assume its the main landing gears. One thing I also did was cut in half all the exhaust panels to give the extended look of them in their latest appearance since I mentioned earlier they were of the prototype Concorde. Again, good luck Brad!

Thanks Charles...Yes the panel lines in the plastic are cut way too deep with the Airfix kit. I'm filling them and then later touch them up a tad.The cockpit will be seen just a little from the outside.

Brad, that is one stunning piece of work.

You should offer it to British Airways to see how much you can get for it.

They would be stupid to pass this up.

Love seeing your work. keep it up.

Great work Brad! I'll post a pic of the current Doyusha 1/200 Concorde I did work on. Although it was a prototype model, I had to carve plastic from another Concorde for the tail piece, get a 1/200 decal from Draw decal for windows and then use Revell 1/144 BA 737 decals on the tail, cut to size, what a mess that was just to cut to size just to do the Landor scheme. Not to mention, I had to get an old sheet of NASCAR decals with red stripes. The tail piece 'needle' in the back needs to be extended and somehow, I've got to figure out a way to carve a 'needle' for the adjustable visor instead of the prototype version, seems a little fat compared to the latest Concorde produced. It's no big deal, but if there is some suggestion you can offer, let me know. Again, great work!

I am impressed with the tires on all of your planes. Seems like a small detail but for someone with such attention to detail I am not surprised you make them look so real and life like. Can you describe what you do to them?

Thanks Smoothjazz. I still have to weather the belly and other sections.

..really 1 1/2 so far. Not to mention the styrene to fill in areas too. One the most time/brain consuming builds.

You should offer it to British Airways to see how much you can get for it.

They would be stupid to pass this up.

Love seeing your work. keep it up.

Thanks DLmd11 VERY MUCH!!!!

Charles
Hi Charles,
The prototype was very different indeed. Engine /tail/visor/cockpit windows. Send me a pm about the needle...(antenna)? Look forward to see the pics too

Hi Matt,

The tires on this 1/72 scale Airfix kit are made from rubber. I scuffed them up and removed all the un wanted flash from them as well. I also bought a set of Airwaves Detail set tires and wheels for the kit. They are made from resin and are suposse to represent the actual size of the Concorde tires/wheels. However I could not see any size difference and went with the kit's rubber tires. The tail skid gear wheels are too small and replaced by a set of 1/200 B737 nose tires.
