Default 1:144 Airfix South African Airways 737-200

my first 1:144 model kit! my first build for a lucky collector!
thought i show some work in progress shots. nothing too glamorous at this moment....got ALOT to work on.

wings ready for engines and further painting and detailing

chromed out engines ready for detailing

currently a very shabby looking fuselage haha. working out the kinks! airfix kits are actually pretty accurate, just has some parts that dont fit flush (like all model kits).

i think this is my best build to date! hows portside looking? added some special detail decals too just for the fun of it. this is just a dry fitting. landing gears are coming soon, they are so hard to work with!

Isn't it SAL - Suid Afrikaanse Lugdiens in that livery? Kai are you going to take a photo of the 737 in the sunlight because all the chroming on the engines are gonna burn my retinas

Well, SAA was a bit 'strange' in handling their liveries, in particular this one.
There are various B737-244 registrations like ZS-SIA/C/E/M that show the SAA title on the right side of the fuselage, while ZS-SIH and SIJ show it on the left side, however ZS-SIK indeed had the SAA logo again on the right side of the fuselage.
It seems as if SAA really couldn't make up their mind on where to place the logo. This already started back with their B707s, which also came in different liveries....

Nevertheless... this is one of the most beautiful models I have seen in a long time. Certainly beats the typical rush for U.S. liveries....

hey guys. that SAA vs SAL i had problems with. This Liveries Unlimited decal set came with 1x SAA and 1x SAL so i assume one side of the jet was SAA and the other SAL with appropriate titles "south african airways" and "suid afri...." etc.

can anyone confirm? i havent done the starboard side yet.

billay, the gray was straight up gunze aircraft gray i believe. in one of the pics you can see it blurred, the small bottle with the black toothpick on it =P. ill have to confirm it later for you. 1:144 because ive started building for clients already. =) 1:144 is actually a very beautiful scale!

Great build Kai, this has to be your best yet!
Did the paint make the dots in the white paint job or did the plastic? I've heard if you don't thourghouly rinse Airfix plastic, the release agents will really mess with the paint.

dots? you mean those bumps or whatever?
if we are on the same page those things must be small dust spots that got trapped during painting/primering.

oooo, ouch. That bird doesnt look too comfy. It would be nice if there was some diecast 737-200 in 1/144 because you could just pop it in the plastic cradle with some extra packing and be good to go!

P.S. Where are you sending this bird to?

Kai, sorry if I sound nosey. I'm not trying to be. I was just wondering because I think it is very awsome that your beautiful builds are now going to be seen around the world. Also, I have bought from many many countries around the world and I just wanted to see if I could give you some feedback on the shipping of a particular country.
Please, dont tell me who you are sending it to.

Bill-Ay,

Not a big secret.... Lynn built the model for me. I had it sitting in my closet for the longest time and am unfortunately not as gifted as some of you, in the art of building these babies.

Once I saw what he could do with the 1/200 B747SPs, I figured I'd give it a shot and contact him to ask for his help and he came through.

I live in Houston, so this model is not going to travel that far

Cheers

in the mail sir. and yes i didnt want to mention it was you without your permission! =) good thing you answered.

usps was a real jerk in front of me. lady just threw that box into a plastic bin, the bin fell off the chair and hit the floor along with my box. then another lady came by picked it up and tossed it into those large cloth shipping bins.

alll this after i said "yes it is fragile" and "please stamp fragile on the box" ....they didnt even stamp fragile even after i mentioned it to them again..

i never experienced such lack of care from usps before...especially right in front of my eyes. if this happens again......

hope it makes it there in one piece springbok!

That's why I prefer to use FedEx (granted that I get a discount with them ), but the level of service with the USPS just doesn't impress me, especially here with my local USPS office. Long lines and employees that seem as if they couldn't care less...

Let's hope it makes it here in one piece, else I will 'bug' you for an online course in fixing models

Ooo, that bites! Just imagine all the other fragiles that go through this poor process. I hate USPS.

Let's hope it makes it here in one piece, else I will 'bug' you for an online course in fixing models
only thing i worry about are the antenna and gears really (which will only break if the model shifts). those toothpicks should keep the model from moving no matter what, and those green plastic ties/strings were backup in case a toothpick fails. everytooth pick i stuck in there has a redundant one in case one fails... shoot. i packed this one like i never packed a model before.

Thumbs up Re: 1:144 Airfix South African Airways 737-200

Lynn,

Thanks for the great packing, the model arrived in one piece with not a scratch on it. Also, thanks to your great skills I have another great SAA model that I can add to my ever growing SAA collection

Many thanks again

Cheers
