Default 1:200 PanAm Boeing 747SP N533PA Billboard

(posting this thread so that i dont forget to show pics, a reminder to self)
After my singapore is finished, all my attention will be to completing this bird. im just so sick and tired that no manufacturer (other than FM) has released a -SP that im taking the matter into my own hands!

its also pretty hard when i only have one picture to work off of . if anyone stumbles across B533PA in billboard colors please post here in this thread to help me out and help me make this model as accurate as can be! thanks!!

whenever i get off work, ill post its current state and make this thread into another one of my "in process" threads. i already have the decals so after i smoothen out a couple of bumps ill be ready to alclad its belly, this should be a smooth rather "quick" project

stay tuned. this is the hallmark of what ive been waiting for: to finally have a -SP, not to mention have a PanAm billboard model...a BIG ONE that shows off the billboard PanAm type and all its glory!

Will this be "Clipper Young America"? Will your model have the "50" title aft of the cockpit windows too?

alriteeeee nice and white and smooth! i put some lead weights into this bird so it feels nice and solid!

tomorrow i plan to mask top half off so that i can paint the silver underbody. wingbox is going to be a headache to mask and paint! i hate masking off curves!

I'll be interested in seeing this finished. Where did you get the mold, or did I miss something above? Did you remove the flap canoes on the wings? Nice job so far!

ah yes, i havent moved on this much since that picture. i wish i didnt have to work and can work on models all day long!!!

the mold is a flightminiatures panam 747sp
Pan AM (OC) - Boeing 747SP 1:200 Scale Model
i had originally bought it thinking that i could add landing gear to it and it be a great model but it had so many imperfections (such as upper deck windows placed so low to the pan am markings) that i decided just to strip it and buy some Platz decals from japan and do a billboard edition of it with my own accuracy.

platz also sells a 747SP kit too but their kits are not cheap at all!!! but highly accurate.

i didnt strip the canoes, they are still under there. the -SP had much smaller ones compared to the regular 747s

sorry for the lack of updates. the dreaded work excuse has kept me real busy!

this is so far so good! i thought this alclad aluminum would look like crap but the results were excellent and spot on with what i had in mind.

the storm isnt over yet though, the hardest part of building a model is doing the masking right and i still need to mask that wing root/box flaring! dont know how ill accomplish that. anyone have ideas how to mask those curves?

i see a couple of knicks in the paint that ill need to smoothen out in the end.

Kai you're doing fine. Let there be at least some flaws in it. Nothing can turn out picture perfect.

Just do what is the best of your ability. If you strive for ultimate perfection then you'll never be satisfied and if you end up letting it go then that will be even worse.

N533PA rolling out for preliminary checks!!!! no corroguard, leading edges, or completed engines yet!!

something about this mold bothers me. maybe its the shape of that upper deck bump. i already know the wingbox flaring isnt too accurate which made the top of the silver belly a bit low comapred to the pics you see above...

this has the feel of a -300 because of that upper deck. supposed to be rounder and shorter?

oh well you give and you take. i guess thats what i get for using a FM mold instead of the top of the line stuff. but pricewise this is definitely a better value.

I just got this one as well but I'm leaving it in the original PA livery.

@Kai: Did you try angling the wings upwards a little? If so how did you go about it?

i was going to leave it in the original livery but the upper deck window placement bothered me so much that i couldnt keep it the way it was

yea that dihedral on my wings on this FM is corrected. gonna be hard to explain here online but you need to shave off and level off the bottom of the wing where it inserts (shave it down to the angle you want the wing to be at). and in doing so you will also need to take a bit off the top so that it will fit.

ill try to draw a diagram in a few minutes

ok heres a quickie diagram

you will effectively reduce the wings' ability to stay inside the hole and will need to glue the wings together. just a warning

Ok, thats makes sense and what I was also thinking. However I don't plan to glue the wings together but after shaving off the required amount, I'll apply a little glue around the bottom of the wings across the shaved off area and let it completely dry and cure. I'll apply enough so that when the wings are pushed in, the dried glue at the bottom sort of creates a bit of 'lift' and a tight fit which will keep the wings held in firmly. Its difficult to explain but its always worked with me.

ALMOST DONEEEEEE im so excited!

added some corroguard. got some more leading edges to do and my own custom detail decals. sorry for the spots on my lens!

i found the microSol eats through some paint, especially my gray ones. oh well i think the clear coat will cover up those defects.
