You seriously think Zvezda is a crappy model maker? I thought this model quite realistic and the mould is very accurate. Look at the detail on it.

I don't think that IL-96 or TU-154 are the EE kits, but what I can do is dig them out (you really got me curious now) and take pics of them and post them here. I think I'll do that.

Well, those were poor words to use. Actually, a lot of the detail is quite off i.e. The engines fans. The fusalage halves did not fit together at all! That was a pain in the butt. The middle main gear doors were awful to work with. The windshield did not fit at all!

Please do take pictures, I would love to see them.

Hi! I also have Il-86 from zvezda, An-124 from Revell and not ready Il-96-300 Domododevo airlines from EE. I agree, the moulds are very ugly, but decals are even worse! There are many mistakes on it. I'll post here pictures of it. From Braz-models you can get better landing gear for it (made of metall :-) ).

Ok here are the pics of my 1:144 IL-96-300 and 1:200 TU-154. As you can see there is no manufacturer listed on the boxes except that the models were made by the Tupolev Aviation Corporation and Vaso in Russia. They didn't cost me much either at the time I got them which was about 10 years ago for around GBP 15.00 for the IL-96 and GBP 12.00 for the TU-154:

Ok here are pics of some other 'odd' kits I found over the years. This is a 1:300 scale Iran Air 747 which was made in Iran with the instructions printed in Persian and English. A friend got this model for me when visiting Iran 6 years ago. Hardly cost him $10:

I also found this 1:300 scale 777-200 kit here locally for $5. The pics don't indicate much but its quite a nice mould. There was also a 747-400 by the same company which I also got for $5. Now if only I could find decals for these 1:300 kits:

Wizz, welcome to this forum! Yes, they are ugly. I forgot to mention what a nightmere it was to use the decals in the Zvezda kit(AHHHHH!). Braz also makes replacement engines for the IL-86.

Mjabbasi, I do envy your russian models. Thanks for the pics. Check ebay every now and then to see if and 1/300 scale decals come up. Zhengdefu and a Canadian company also made 1/300 777 kits.

Thanks Billy. So have you seen these IL-96 and TU-154 models before? Are they the EE kits?

I have 2 Zhengdefu kits of the Qantas Wunala and ANA Marine 744 and I hate the moulds, but you've given me an idea as far as using their decals are concerned.

Mja., the IL-96 does look like the EE kit, but I would have to see more detail first. I dont know if the TU-154 is an EE kit, but once again, I would have to see the parts. I am guessing though that they are EE kits.
I dont own one, but I know a lot about these kits.

Glad I gave you an idea!

EE=Eastern Express. I'm not sure though if thats the name of the manufacturer or an airline.

Wow, ok Jason, I will help ya!

Things to buy first: Sanding sticks, bottle glue, masking tape, plastic cutters, xacto knife, scissors(if you want to cut out the decals), paint of your choice(I recomend Tamiya acrilyc paints), spray cans(suggested for start), paint brush or airbrush and any other things that you think you might need.

Paint: For the PA shine I would go with a paint called AlcladII or Model Master Metalizer paints. These will get the shine you want, with some extra sanding. Also Tamiya Gloss Aluminum will get a very nice sheen(comes in spray can).

Putty: Putty is used for filling gaps, holes and windows; pretty much anything you need filledl, it will do the job. I suggest Milliput or Squadoron brands of putty.

Decals: I usually use the kit decals but there are some exquisite decal makers out there. Draw Deacl, TwoSix Decals, Liveries Unlimited, etc. It is really who you want to pick.

Airbrush: Yes, indeed you can get by without one. I built my IL-86 with no airbrush help, but instead using spray cans. I love spray cans, they are very effective, and get the job done(highly recomended for beginners). Once you get more advanced, you should get an airbrush.

Model/decal preservation: To Seal my models and decals, I use future floor wax(mentioned in the tutorial). This stuff is amazing! All you have to do is take a fat paint brush and just stroke even strokes on the model, and there you have it. Some other, more "professional" brands are Testors clear cotes and Tamiya clear cotes. These come in two different sets: Gloss cote and Flat cote. The gloss will give it that shine that you would like. Oh yes, the Future will make the model unbelievably shiny!

I will add something to this. For products to buy i will add very usefull Talens liquid masking film (like masking tape, but you can mould it in any shape), Parafilm wax masking foil (only in medicshops). This thing can help you making canopies.

Paints: I prefer Testors, Pactra or Revell (all acrylic) for use with paint brush (only, i have never used any airbrush!). For aluminium look i do so:
1. I paint it.
2. After drying you must polish (don't mislead with my nationality - Polish) it with dry, little soft cloth or towel
3. Then i put on it level of clear gloss paint.
4. Now is like a mirror!
or
1. Buy special aluminium tape for models.
2. Cut piece of it to put on the part.

putty: i use revell (like sandstone after drying) and humbrol (like grey plastic)

decals:---

airbrush: wtf?... but seriously i never used it

special parts: In poland you can buy metal photoetched parts for airliners from extratech. They look very cool! but they need to use superglue. You can also buy resin parts (for wheel bays). Of course you can also buy plastic rods, sheets and pipes for customize your model.

tips & tricks:
1. Use round toothpick for painting wheels. Put wheel on a top of it.
2. Before cutting small parts put the plastic frame into small plastic bag. You don't need to search this parts on your floor.
3. Use masking tape also for safe cutting of photoetched parts.

I think that's all.

For a first build I would suggest a Hasegawa 737 kit, very easy and the results are spectacular!
Wizz!, I wish we could get Revell paint in the USA(without having to pay an arm and a leg).

Jason, it is the exact same kit as the -30. I have a "-40" kit from '83 and it is the exact same(just put -40 on the box to make it look better).

Jason, do NOT go to Michaels! They have the worst products, at bad prices. Find a local hobby shop in LA(should be dozens!) that carries supplies and stuff in that manner. EMAIL for any other questions and for a list of products.

I Think Bill-Ay's Ego Has Been Stroked Too Much & Boy, Look At The Number Of Replies Bill-Ay Posted!.
Neverththeless The Model Looks Good. (Bill-Ay Please Don't Reply Or I'll Delete This)
Never Understimate The Model Abilities Of A Kid. By The Time I Was 12 I Had Over 300 Model Kits Painted Without The Use Of An Airbrush.
My First Model Was A Sail Ship The Cutty Sark At 6 Years Old! Got Thread From My Mom's Sewing Kit & Followed The Box Art To Do The Rigging As No Rigging Was Supplied, Nor Was There Any Instructions! Turned Out REALLY Well!
I Also Did Intricate Paint Schemes On The Likes Of FW 190s, ME-109s, RAF Wellington's & The Like By The Time I Was 8. Never Could Master The US Navy Planes Though...You DEFINITELY Needed An Airbrush. Somehow The Hard White Lines Against The Navy Blue Just Din't Look Right.
Never Bought Any USN Planes Beyond A Single Wildcat For That Reason.

Job Well Done Bill-Ay.
