Default Boeing 737-200 Air France 1/100 3D-print model

Hello!
Today, I want to show you a Boeing 737-200 model in Air France livery. The model is in 1/100 scale, with extended landing gear. The model is printed on a 3D printer and painted with artistic acrylic paints with a brush. Decals are stickers printed on an inkjet printer, used white photo paper.
The model size: fuselage length: 295.4 mm, full length: 305.3 mm, wingspan: 283.5 mm.

The model has a well-developed stitch of fuselage, wings and engine, which can be seen in the images of the computer 3D model. But I printed the parts on a FDM-printer and painted with a brush - because of this, it is not visible. To reveal all the beauty of the model need SLA-printer.

The future of model airliner building. Sort of a 21st Century scratch build. Wonderful build, and brush painted, too. Move to the Head of the Class. Doug

Thanks for your positive feedback.
I have not found the Air France liveries history. Do you know the name of this livery or the period when it was applied to aircraft?

I would say - the future is today! Already now you can find many different aircraft models for a 3D-printer. The printed model will never be discontinued and there is no need to wait for it to be reissued. You don't have to wait for delivery and pre-order. You just print it and that's it. The head of the class is 737-100? Now I have a Boeing 737-200, -700, -800, -900, 7 max, -8 max, 9 max, -10 max; Boeing 787-8, -9, 10; Airbus A320 / A321 CEO series; Antonov AN-178.

[QUOTE=Sandman_d;2860814]Thanks for your positive feedback.

Your question is quite interesting.

The barcode livery was introduced in 1976 when the Concorde was delivered to the airline.
All the aircraft received this livery except the Caravelle.

No change until the early 1990s when the Groupe AIR FRANCE was created merging AF, Air Inter and UTA.
A new AF logo and GROUPE AIR FRANCE replaced the old one on the nose of the aircraft.
At the same time the AF titles on the fuselage was slightly modified and the barcode on the fin received minor changes.

UTA livery disappeared.
Air Inter aircraft received AIR INTER EUROPE titles on the fuselage with the AF barcode on the fin, all this was a bit confusing, misleading and unnecessary.
Finally, Air Inter aircraft received the full AF livery without any compromise.

This the livery of your B 737.

The livery remained the same until the mutually agreed merger between AF and KLM in 2004.

AIR FRANCE / KLM logo and later AIR FRANCE / KLM GROUP replaced the previous logo on the nose and at the same time, old style AF logo, the original one, went to the engine nacelles.

In 2009 the barcode and the AF titles were revised.

And quite recently with the introduction of the A 220-300 in the AF fleet a few changes were made ...

Over the time some modifications were applied to the liveries, sometimes subtle and unnoticed : position of the registration marks on the fuselage, or more visible such as the addition of the Skyteam logo behind the cockpit windows.

This is my best answer.

A small book or a document explaining all this would be welcome and could be the reference in this matter, something that I am going to suggest to the AF Museum, not sure they would react positively to my email ...

Jean Pierre.

And a version of the Boeing 737-200 with the retracted landing gear. Livery is also Air France, but different from the previous one.

Thanks for the information. Based on this, I will refer to these liveries as follows:
- Air France livery (Groupe Air France)
- Air France livery (Air France – KLM / SkyTeam)
It may be wrong, but informative.

Excellent work. First time I’ve ever seen a 1/100 3D printed model. As others here have said, this could be a major part of the future of our hobby. Exciting times!

Fantastic looking 1/100 model and excellent paint job. By the way, how much did it cost to produce this model, materials? Thank you, T7

Very nice looking airplane!
I am not very familiar with printing in 3D myself, but sometimes it seems the only way to get an aircraft you want in your collection. The parts fit nicely together in your model.
Personally I am not sure yet which type of plastic can best be used in order to get the smoothest and most detailed finish at the end. I guess the type of printer available is really key to that. Not all plastics take paint very well is my experience.
What combination works best in your opinion?

My first model was a Boeing 787-10 in 1/144 scale, but then I switched to 1/100 scale - it is possible get models with more detail.

The manufacturing cost of the model is very low. One model needs about 120g of filament (plastic) - that's less than $2. Paints, varnish and decals are about $2 too, but I used non-professional paints. So the cost of one of my models is about $ 4 It is more expensive to buy a 3D model for printing, but you can print it as much as you want.

In the near future, a 3D printer will be a common thing, like a printer for printing on paper. I regularly use it not only for modeling airplanes, but also for printing everyday things - kitchen utensils, toys, tools ...
I have several unique models that are not produced by manufacturers, for example, the AN-178 in 1/72 scale (Herpa and KUM make them only in 1/200). Or a Boeing 737-200 in 1/48 scale, I especially like the comparison with 1/100 - it looks like a Boeing 747 with a shuttle.
In FDM printing, the most common 3 types of filament (plastic):
- PLA is a biodegradable plastic specially designed for 3D printing. Features - easy to print, can be handled mechanically, acetone resistant
- PETg - modified for 3D printing PET plastic (bottles for water and drinks are made from it). Features - medium difficulty of printing, not amenable to mechanical processing, resistant to almost all solvents
- ABS and modifications - there is my favorite material for 3D printing. The material is very easy to process mechanically. Dissolve with acetone - I use acetone and other solvents instead of glue. But the material is difficult to print and requires good skills.
I use acrylic paints and have had no problems with PLA and ABS printed models (I don't like working with PETg). Perhaps nitro paint will dissolve the ABS model, I don't know.
You can also print with resin. SLA printers have a very high resolution and allow you to make very accurate and complex parts. I do not use such a printer, but I know people who have printed my models with resin and have very good results. But just like when printing with plastic, the part must be sanded after printing with resin.
In future works, I plan to combine these two types of printing. Print large parts with plastic, and print small parts with resin - this should give maximum results.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply in such detail. I appreciate that! I have taken the info and put it in my "tutorial" file for future reference. At one point I think I will have to rely to this kind of model making. Upto now I have been able to either find skilled model builders or use existing scaled models to create what I want to get closer to a complete collection. Nice pics too!

Fantastic work, Denis! I recently purchased the STL files for the 1:48 737-200 on Cults3D (I had messaged you prior to that with a few questions). I was able to send the files off to be printed through Treatstock, which I much prefer over sites like Shapeways. I was able to order all of the parts except for the wings and center fuselage to be printed in SLA. The wings and center fuselage are being printed in ABS. I could have also had the wings and center fuselage printed in SLA, but that was going to bump the price up substantially. I'm still not 100% sure what livery I'm going to finish this model in, but I'm very much looking forward to receiving the parts in another week or two and getting to check this model out with my own eyes!

Jean Pierre, is Jean Signoret your contact in the AF Museum?

Yes Maurice, my contact at the AF Museum is jean Signoret, I have had many contacts with him but I am having a few disagreements with the AF Museum, their motivation about model aircraft is equal to zero, add to this the fact that Socatec is missing in action.

To make the story short there is no one in France to commission a model with an Air France livery.

I sent an email to Jean Signoret about the little book that could be published about the different liveries of our aircraft.
So far I have not received any answer from him, I could start working alone with the pictures I could find on Google but having an unlimited access to the AF archives would be more comfortable.

I am old enough to say that I remember the DC 3s, Languedocs and Comets which where flown by AF in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

I still remember all the variants of our liveries, I have photos of them, If nothing is done, one day there will be nobody to talk about this and explain the evolutions of the different variants.

A few months ago, Herpa released a very nice DC 4 with a livery supposed to be the 1946 delivery scheme, but as I already said, nice does not mean accurate, sadly, we had a mix of different variants.

When pictures of the model became available, I explained Socatec what was wrong without any success ... and the model was accepted by the Museum ...

Always the same story, before making a model, accepting the advice of some one who may contribute to make an accurate model should not be neglected.

Really ... I am not sure to renew my subscription to the AF Museum ... and I will explain the reasons behind my decision.

Jean Pierre.
