Default Custom KLM Connies

The first is 1:144 built from a TWA plastic model kit. The second is a 1:72 Atlantic Models with some custom work and decals.

Mike Wood did both and added lights to the smaller one.

Great job, great model and great aircraft.

Certainly one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built.

Congratulations, thanks for sharing.

Jean Pierre.

As an aside, I wonder if me ordering the Atlantic one in 1999 as a custom (it is now part of their regular line) caused subsequent releases to use the same registration.

Hogan, the original Western Models, Aeroclassics and now the Schuco one. Although it looks like the Schuco blank is the short nose, no radar. If that's the case I hope they do delivery colors with the blue on the engine nacelles. I'll have to get it then.

I still have the certificate that was given me for crossing the Equator on -LKK. Contains date, tail number and route.

Edit: A couple years ago I got a vanity license plate: PH-LKK. No one knows what that is, but what the heck

Thanks for sharing these customs. They really look great. Don't know Mike Wood, but he did a really nice job. If I had to pick one aircraft I could fly today from "before my time" it would be a Connie. I have both PH-LKK (Herpa Wings) and PH_LDE, an L-749 made by Western Models. Simply beautifully shaped aicraft.

My first trip to the US was on TWA, many years ago. I arrived in the Saarinen terminal at JFK, also a place which breathes the early days of mass aviation. 20 years later there is a Connie in front of the TWA hotel. I stayed there for two nights and visited the plane. Great experience even though I stayed firmly on the ground.

That TWA Connie is very cool. A while back I was in Munich with my dad and we took a side trip to a little air display near MUC. One of the planes was a Lufthansa Super G that you could board and look around.

Sitting looking out over the wing reminiscing about flying on these as a kid, the wind was pretty blustery and the plane was buffeting around a bit. It almost felt like it was flying.

When back home looking at pictures I took of the cockpit, I noticed the registration plate was actually an Air France Connie. Lufthansa must have somehow gotten it and repainted it for the museum.

It's great to see a few aircraft still flying or near flying condition, but their numbers are diminishing.
In The Netherlands we have a restored L-749 which flew until 2009, but then the museum went bust. It's now on static display in KLM colors. It belonged to the US Air Force and participated in the Berlin Airlift. Nice history.
