Question What finish is best for airliner models?

Hi,

I recently started doing some custom models, and I'm painting the base color with flat white. I plan on clear coating this with gloss clear in order to provide a good surface for the decals to adhere to. However is gloss the most appropriate finish for matching most standard models or getting the most realistic finish? I was thinking a semi gloss might match the other models best? How do you like to finish your customs?

Any input would be great appreciated!

semi all day long (keep the laughing to a minimum please)

personally i think it looks more realistic, but its down to personal preference. i like to weather customs as well. only in large scale otherwise it gets messy.

I use gloss most often (Mr Hobby Topcoat gloss). However have used semi gloss as well (Tamiya Semi Gloss Clear).

As stated above, it is down to personal preference.

Thanks for the replies, will see how they look after a gloss coat. I was considering weathering them as well. Are there any particular techniques you can recommend that work well for airliners? Most of the material I can find online relates to model trains or larger scale vintage aircraft.

i tend to use track oil colour, thinned down in an airbrush so you can add thin layers untill you get the effect your looking for. its a lot of trial and error.

my advice is study pictures of weathered, dirty planes and try on a cheap rubbish model. also think of the direction of how the dirt got there, use this when deciding on the direction of spray. Last but not least is time, its not a race, chill out and take all the time you need.

Wouldn't there be a possibility of yellowing/fading over time by using a clear coat?

Thanks, I have some cheap models I could try this on. As for the yellowing I don't think its a major issue as most clear coats I can find are UV and yellowing resistant. Happy to be corrected on that, but have been using clear on many things and haven't run into issues so far.

Okay cool. Just making sure you don't get problems later on.
