If a manufacturer were to release "blank" models so that skilled artists like some of those here could make their own planes ... how would you like them to be released?
Please keep in mind that such a model would have to be generic enough so that the majority could make use of it ...
Printed please! Would love to see the Airbuses released in the all white ser. from Dragon. Would love to get Vikings to make me a BI (Royal Brunei) A340!!!!!!
I like the idea of decals for the cockpit and passenger doors/windows. Masking is a BIT¢H!!! If you want it to come out looking REALLY good, the ONLY way is to do all of your painting first and then apply the windows LAST! I'd also want the details like hatches and vents all on the same sheet, indexed for location.

How about both printed and decals in the same box?
The relative final cost difference should not be too significant.
Printed seems to be popular with most of you but if you have a colourful scheme there's no way you can mask passenger or even cockpit windows that easily. The decals would be quite handy. And if you are `anti-decal' on the basis of old kit decals what you had when you were a kid, then you haven't seen the excellent quality (i.e. invisibility when applied) of current aftermarket decals.

It also help to know how to prepare the model's surface, how to apply the decal and how to finish the model after decaling. I voted for the printed cockpit / decal for the side windows but I like your idea better.
You have to release a blank white plane with a decal sheet for the cockpit and window sets and maybe 1 or 2 alternate configurations. It is virtually impossible to mask around printed windows and doors.
The wings should remain unpainted because anyone wishing to recreate for example, a 707 from the 60's and the 70's, will find that a lot of airlines painted stuff on the wings or the entire wing itself.
I think it all comes down to the type of livery you want to do. For example, if you were to make a model of KLM, you would prefer the windows to be decaled as it is very difficult to go around each printed window. Then again, I find decaled windows a pain to apply. When dragon wings were releasing the 1/400 plastic kits, the dealed windows would always rip a part. I would prefer everything to be printed. Mabe having both versions being sold is good?
I voted for decals. Today's decals are invisible when properly applied and overcoated. While you're at it, why not include two sets of decals, just in case... or a way to get replacement decals.
I am unfortunately not a skilled artist, but starting with your first option "white, with cockpit and passenger windows/doors printed" would be my preferred choice.
I would like to see printed cockpit, but decals for windows and
doors... It's impossible to cover windows and doors...

I have to say both. If you have a bland livery the printed windows/doors/cockpit looks best, but if you have a complicated livery or you do something to screw up the printed items, you can always use the decals.

I have been through all answers & suggestion so far.
May I add as an old modellor that if you really want to do your own modelling you better take a plane being ready to be painted & decorated .
I mean no white painting nor any color just plain. I just finished a 747-200 which has the belly silver & the roof white so I was better of with a plain fuselage.( As often I had to wash the entire fuselage & wings of any colors)
Now the windows & cockpit are another story. Suppose you want to do a plane having a deep blue sheet line! If you try to put decals having black windows it's a lost case! you need white or silver windows. Look at one of your models in your glass cabinet and you will see what I mean !
My suggestion:
Plain fuselage and wings
Cockpit and windows in decals having both silver & white colors.
How would you paint the model in the livery you wanted though???
Okay the main part of the aircraft is going to be easy because most of the time you are just using one colour but when it comes down to the small details it's going to be tough. If i wanted a model that hadn't been released the first thing i would do is send the manufacturer a picture and ask them to make a new release. If nothing was able to be done then i think i would leave it rather than fiddle with the paint work.
Secondly if you painted the Custom Model with white and adding windows it's going to be difficult trying not to muck the windows up!! The same goes for the doors and the cockpit windows. The only thing i don't know is "Decals". What are they??

You know, you guys might want to consider using other modelling groups for help. One way of making decals stronger is something new I heard from a modelling buddy. He said that you can purchase from Walmart for 2.97 per can; an Acrylic Clear Gloss or Clear Satin spray made by Krylon. He applied 6 light coats, and that in his words was way more than enough. This helped the older decals keep from cracking and I'm thinking it would help strengthen newer decals as well. Another good cheaper alternative to expensive decal protectants is Future Floor wax which I have used on my plastic models repeatedly. Just some suggestions. Patrick
