Default KLM '70 vintage fleet 1/144

Herewith my KLM ’70 fleet in 1/144. This weekend I finished the DC-9 and the DC-10 cutaway (see separate post) was finished last month. Both the DC-8-63 and B747-200 were finished some years ago. And with this last edition the KLM mainline fleet from my youth is complete.

The B747-200 was the famous Revell B747 Cutaway from the ’70 with a re-release in 2003. The decals are from DrawDecals with aftermarket GE CF6-50E2 resin engines.
It depicts PH-BUO, second generation B747-200’s in KLM’s fleet. These B747’s were remodelled in the 80’s to 747-300 specification with the extended upper deck as most striking difference. The official model designation after this thorough renovation was B747-200SUD (Stretched Upper Deck). The SUD’s were replaced at the beginning of 2000 by B777’s.
Of my four models here, it is in my opinion the least successful. It was also the first airliner I made since a long time, back in 2008.

The DC-8-63 was a Minicraft kit with Avigraphics decals. PH-DEA was the DC-8-63 prototype and KLM was launch customer for this model. Unlike the record suggests, this is the second "long eight" in KLM service. Echo Bravo was the first in the summer of ’67, while Alpha Echo still took part in the certification program and joined the fleet in November that year. The delivery colours were the "horizontal stripe” pattern with a white roof. After the first 747’s joined KLM, all the aircraft were fitted with the now traditional 'blue top' livery. The DC-8 lasted until 1986 and left the fleet after 27 years of mainline service. They were replaced by Airbus A310 on the high density European routes and by the additional B747-300 on the intercontinental routes.

The DC-9-30 was build together with the DC-10 cutaway as pictured in this threat. http://www.diecastaircraftforum.com/...l-1-144-a.html
I hope it shows the progress I made as model builder over the years. And I am still learning, so al the comments are more than welcome!
The good old Airfix DC-9 was full of dents near each joining pin. With patience, filler and sanding it worked out. Like all the models the blue top was done by Xtra 302 old KLM blue with a little white added. The decals were from F-Decal. Beautiful, but the cockpit windows were to large. So I used other ones from the minicraft DC-8 kit. Who can tell the difference? I learned a lot about weathering on the DC-10, so on this model; less-is-more. Except for the tail-cone. That should be dirty on the DC-9 ;-)

KLM is the only airline that has flown all McDonnell Douglas types. From the DC-2 (DC-1 was only a prototype) till MD-11. The latter has only singed out last year.
25 DC-9s have flow for KLM between 1966 and 1989 and without any noteworthy incident. From 1984 there were gradually replaced by Fokker 100 and Boeing 737-300 aircraft.

Thanks for the interest and taking time to watch this threat.

Kind regards, VJ.

Fantastic collection there, love how you managed to get all them seats in that KLM B747-206B!
That with 26 seats in the upper deck? Quite a lot for such a small space

Many thanks for sharing these pieces of historical art, great craftsmanship too!

Actually its the Revell 747 cutaway model, with a modified upper deck. I had cabin plans from the '70 and was fascinated by the colorful interiors of those days. That led to the DC-10 with (complete custom) visual interior.

Thanks for looking!
cheers, VJ

Glad this old thread was dug up VJ It is very impressive. The rainbow colors of seating were very indicative of the late 70' early eighties. love the cutaways. Thank you for digging deep Gold Leader

@ VJ

Anytimes man! I just love such builds, yet a KLM B747-206B with the Upper Deck Lounge would of been fabulous , I am a Lounge nerd for that part hah
Ook een NL'er zo te zien hah buutegeweun!

@ AIR FRANCE 340

No worries man, I always inspire such people

@ AussieJets

Hey no probs, I too used to do modelling before my illness slowed me down, the chronic Sarcoidosis, causes heavy arthritis like pain attacks in my joints and the shakiness is not pleasant can't make anymore modelkits so diecast was my cure, as aircraft modeling went.
But anyways such threads always put a smile to my face, lots of time, patience and love put in to such builds, so I thank you once again VJ for showing us these <3

Awesome work. My dad worked for KLM back then and as a kid got to fly the brand new -63s.

When the 747s were introduced with the white tails, KLM for a short while had the same livery on their other planes before going to the blue fuselage.

Jazeker, zo Hollands als maar zijn kan ;-) Sorry to hear about your health condition by the way. In my stash there is one more cutaway 747B that will become the first KLM 747 once. Indeed, with the white roof top and high polished belly. And with a full lounge of course.

Actually, when F.H.K. Henrion developed the modern KLM corporate identity with the stylish crown in 1961, sales and promotion departement insisted to keep the two tones blue stripes cheat line and tail (sometimes referred to as 'pyjama stripes'). With the introduction of the 747B in 1971 the stripes were removed from the tail because KLM came to the conclusion that the logo and brand name should be more recognizable. But with the huge fuselage of the 747, the adjusted company image appeared to be very white. And all that white needed to be cleaned as wel. So, half a year after the introduction of the white 747 it was decided to paint the roof tops light blue: the start of KLMs epic blue livery's.

cheers, VJ

Didn't Martinair keep the stripes on its 747 tails for a bit? Or is my memory playing tricks on me.

Martinair introduced its stylish M tail-logo, including single tone red cheat-line, in 1971. The first MP 747 was introduced in 1987, so there were no stripes on the MP 747 tail. However, in celebration of its 50th anniversary in 2008, Martinair had B767 PH-MCL painted in the Martin's Air Charter retro livery, including red/blue pyjama stripes.

cheers, VJ

Ah niice the PH-BUA was the first B747 from KLM I am an ex-passenger of the PH-BUA , this was also the world's first B747-200B to have entered service
It was named The Mississippi

My family & I flew the PH-BUA on December 21, 1980 with this flight route:
Amsterdam - Dubai - Singapore - Melbourne - Sydney.

Boeing 747-206B
KLM "KLM White Top Livery from 1971-1982"
"The Mississippi"
PH-BUA
Scale 1:200
Inflight 200

The Flight Attendant made a cabin shot and gifted me the KLM Equator Certificate, they gave that to my parents but assigned to me
Which is this card:

And during this flight the Lounge was still on the upper deck and we had KLM's 1971 White Top Livery.
This all was changed in 1982, to the Sky Blue Livery and the upper deck had been given 38 seats with a 6x 3-3 config + 2 = 38 seats, in 1984 the SUD upgrades were done.
