Oooohh, the legendary Otaki L-1011. Nice! And that's probably my favorite livery on the L-1011. Can't wait to see this one finished!

The best L-1011 model, built by the best builder... What's not to like? Keep those images coming, this will be the ultimate L-1011 modeling primer. Doug

OK, it's apples and oranges, but this -500 I photographed at FLL in 1998 through the chain link fence. Am I correct in that a 1/144 Tristar model is to be released by one of the Eastern European companies? That would be swell in that I sold my Otaki along with 100 other 1/144 model airliners a year ago before I moved to Florida. I miss it, but it was worth more in the box, and it helped me move all those airliner kits. Keep 'em flying, Doug

Looking good Brad! Eastern Express is due to release a -500 in 144 scale sometime soon from what I've read.

R.E.G. Davies in 'Delta, The Illustrated History of a Major U.S. Airline and the People Who Made It', list N737DA as a 'Lockheed' (Loughead) L-1011 Tristar 1. Now I'm totally confused... Where were we again? Doug

Great job so far, Brad.
I am looking forward to finished model. What is origin of decals ? Would belly be metallizer ?
Also, assuming one can be found, how many truckloads of $$$s would an Otaki kit require ?

I believe I used Liveries Unlimited and a detail sheet too. No belly is metallic silver with some silver decals and some Tamiya AS-20 paint too. I'm not sure what the customer paid for the Otaki kit? Maybe a small pick-up load for one if you find the kit.

Lol....yeah, it can definitely be confusing. N737D (no "A" on the end of the reg for this particular ship) was originally a -1, but it was converted to a -250 at some point (not sure when) before it was retired in 2001. I actually got to fly on ship 737 back in February 1999 from ATL to TPA. I loved catching those TriStars down to Florida back in the day. Anyway, what's more confusing is that Delta retrofitted several -1s with the Frisbee fairing under the #2 intake around the late-'90s, which made them look like -250s.

I've got one of these beautiful kits, still unbuilt... Given my collection of Brad's builds (Hawk/Glencoe Capital Viscount, Hasegawa UAL Battleship, and Heller 1/72 UAL DC-6B) it's tempting to commission another build... But which kit and which livery??? Brad, anything you're in the mood to build? How about a retro prop job in 1/72. Maybe a Mohawk CV-440 from the Proteus kit? An AA Electra in 1/72 from Welsh Models? I'll send you a PM...

"Anyway, what's more confusing is that Delta retrofitted several -1s with the Frisbee fairing under the #2 intake around the late-'90s, which made them look like -250S." OK, got it... Wandering further off topic, wouldn't it be great if AeroClassics designed, produced, and released in large numbers the ultimate 1/400 L-1011 mould in Lockheed prototype, and maybe Delta liveries, too, and hold the fiddly bits like rotating tires and aerials that just don't work in 1/400. Yeah, and perhaps get Brad to help out with the design of the mould... What the hey, Doug

Really cool build Brad ... it's gonna be a beauty for sure!

What also impresses me is the amount of engineering involved in the flap systems of airliners, even the L-1011 ... which was designed in the day before modern 3D CAD systems. All the engineering design was done of flat drafting tables using pencil or ink methods, and had to be visualized in 2D and accurate to within 1/1000th of an inch! Going back even further were the triple-slotted flaps of the 727s ... along with leading edge Krueger slats!

Kudos to all the engineers who have worked on these planes - and other amazing feats of engineering that we take for granted!

Brad, you wanna make it 100% accurate? Add "Ron Allen sucks d#$K" drawn by a disgruntled ramp-rat's finger in the APU exhaust soot stain. Saw at least 10-15 different ship #'s with this feature during my ramp days at Delta during the mid-90's! Great build man!

Schould be interesting how Brad does the replication on this weathering to the build.

Brad, do you use an ink wash to highlight the seam lines and panel lines? How do you do the dirty marks across the top of the fuselage too around the join lines? Looks very realistic

Hi, I use a pencil to help darken the re made panel lines. Then if needed I use a colored powder (railroad dust) to shade in the grime aft of the panel line.
