Question Acrylic paints and airbrush

Hello all,

I am going to use airbrush for the first time with Tamiya acrylic paints. Just wondering should I use Tamiya thinner with the paint or water in airbrush?

For some reason I tend towards the thinner but I wanted to make sure before using the airbrush and risk damaging it.

What is the best mixture ratio for a double action airbrush?

Thanks in advance

Ben

Ben,
Tamiya acrylic is water soluble. No need the thinner actually

Ratio 3 parts of paints and 1 part of thinner/water would give you a fine mixture.
The good side using the thinner, since it is the isopropylalcohol based solution, it will dry up relatively faster than water.

Good choice on acrylic...avoid enamel if you can

Thanks a lot !

For some reason I thought the amount of thinner should be higher than one part to prevent the acrylic dry quickly while inside the airbrush nozzle. Maybe I understood it incorrectly.

What is the best way to measure the paint and thinner to be put in the airbrush ?I was thinking to use dropper but then paint would get stuck in there.

Pardon me, I have never measure exactly the ratio of the thinner and paint, neither using dropper.

Only rough measurement using "a customized small cup" to measure, and never flush the remaining paint that sticks on the cup wall. Once the mixture is almost-like milk consistency, I am happy and start to spray.

I read that it should be the consistency of full fat milk, which is about right. I always just mix by eye, and the paint wont dry in the nozzle, unless you put it down for about 10min. I would also use water, thinner is expensive and water does the same job. I also agree, avoid all other paints beside acrylic, they are hell when cleaning the airbrush.

I also recommend flushing the airbrush with windscreen wiper fluid to clean it (don't water it down)
