Default Qantas L1011 Tristar

Hi folkes,
This is my custom Airfix 1:144th Qantas Lockheed L1011 Tristar, a classic aeroplane in a classic colour scheme. In the 1970s Lockheed submitted an unsolicited proposal to Qantas. Referred to in these documents as the "Lockheed: Solutions for the 70s", this proposal included a suggested Qantas fleet of up to 12 L1011 Tristars and four L500 Galaxy freighters. As history would show, Qantas never accepted this proposal, but the L1011 500 was short-listed by Qantas for a requirement that would eventually see two Boeing 747 SPs ordered, (the other aircraft on that short-list was the DC-10 30).

Enjoy

That's a great kit build - looks really good, and I wish Qantas and others had supported the L1011. I know all the reasons why others bought the DC-10 (and the 747SP), but the Tristar was the better airplane. Later, Doug

Not bad. Not bad at all. I never knew that Qantas was looking at the Tristar.

Thats a great model.
I wonder how the landscape would of been like if QF had gone ahead with a Tristar purchase.

I am assuming that if Qantas had used the Tristar in their fleet - it might of been used as a 767 type role, serving regional Asia and possible trunk domestic routes SYD/MEL/BNE. But this was in competition with the 747 so she probably was not in the running.

The Qantas L1011 would have come into it's own after the merger with Australian Airlines, as she would have been ideal for the domestic trunk routes which Qantas inherited and found itself operating. Especially given that the best Ansett would have had to compete with at the time was the 767-200, which did not offer the seats per sector or freight uplift capacity of the Tristar. The L1011 would also have shared a common engine-type with the QF fleet of 747-200/SP/300s of the time thereby generating significant engineering/maintenance savings. Once replaced by a new Qantas fleet of A330-200/300s, the L1011 fleet could have then been passed to a start-up Jetstar in a one-class high density configuration...inundating the market with LCC fares and belting a then new Virgin Blue (with their relatively small fleet of 737s), into obliviion before they ever got a foothold in the domestic market. That's one reality anyway lol

Hindsight is 20/20, but most DA.C'ers could run a better airline than most current CEOs, anyway. Later, Doug

Great model and would have loved to see Qantas with L-1011s

These are a couple of 1/400 customs I had made some years ago and still like them.
