Default My New Project

Well for those of you who remember I was building an airport that started out as a PHX replica, but in the end was more of just something to display models at. In the end it looked like this.

Unfortunately before i could ever really do that much with it it was destroyed by my cats...

Today I bought the materials to build a new and better airport to showcase my ever expanding 1:200 scale collection. I plan on having a large portion of the main building done by the end of the weekend.

In just about 30 minutes tonight I have put together, and painted the roof of the main building. The general measurements of the main terminal building will be 6 inches wide, by 72 inches long. The airport as a whole once completed will cover a 5 foot by 9 foot area.

It will have 4 regional parking spots, 12 narrow body gates capable of handing Boeing 757-300W or smaller aircraft, and 2 wide body gates capable of handing Airbus A380-800 or smaller aircraft.

This picture shows the roof that i put together and painted tonight. Tomorrow I will add the walls and together they will make the main support of the main terminal, but it won't just be a square when finished. I have some nice tricks in store!

I'll be using my 1:200 ground foils for this project, and when finished it will be 10 times greater than the last airport I attempted to build ever was.

Now I know how everyone is on DAC, they want to see progress, not just talk. By tomorrow I hope to have a lot more done! And will keep this thread updated regularly.

Work is moving steadily along today on more parts of the main terminal building. I learned last time to paint them before i put them together. These 4 parts will be the main walls of the main terminal building which is 6 in. wide, by 72 in. long. 2 of the 4 pieces will be on each side.

Ok so frankly, as can be seen by the photo above my painting skills are not to great. I thought I could paint something good enough but I couldn't so I painted over them, and let a computer do the painting for me.

The result is much much better.

The smaller doors are .6 of an inch tall and the larger doors are .8 of an inch tall.

I will soon be attaching the roof to the walls and will have a good start to the new project.

Ok I now have the walls connected to the roof.

The roof is a little hard to see because it's black on dark green but it's there.

Now the roof you see is the roof you will be able to see when it's done, but the walls will have more in front of them. So the edges look rough but you won't be able to see them once it's finished.

Also it's the ping pong table that bends not the airport.

It's hard to explain what I'm doing next so you'll just have to wait and see.

A Gemini200 Boeing 757 is sitting next to it to help you see the size of it.

Thanks! I'll have more updates tomorrow! The pictures don't really don't do it's size justice. When finished it will be 9 feet long by 5 feet wide!

Ok here are some new shots.

I've added the two ends of the main terminal. Again the rough edges you won't be able to see once finished, so it's fine that they are a little rough.

This end is where the 2 wide body gates will be. So here is a 767 to show a size comparison.

And at the other end is where the 4 regional spots will be.

I found it at Hobby Lobby. It was thin 11 x 8 in. sheets of plastic. I'm not exactly sure what it was called, but it was down by the painting supplies.

Well, now when I'm not working on it or using it, it gets put in the spare room where the cats don't go because we keep it closed all the time. It will be big, but it will also be movable.

In addition to the two ground foils I've already developed (the 757-300 or smaller narrow body gate, and the A380 or smaller wide body gate) I have had to develop a new set for regional planes for the airport. Here are some pics of what is done so far on the new set of ground foils.

Aircraft marks include the ERJ-190, ERJ-195, CRJ-900, CRJ-1000, ATR-72, Q300, Q400, ERJ-135, ERJ-140, ERJ-145, CRJ-100, CRJ-200, EMB-120, ATR-42, EMB-110, Q100, and Q200.

I know there is no ERJ-130. Put it on by mistake.

I can add or take of planes at any time since there are a lot of regional planes I don't have listed. Then again a lot of what is listed doesn't even exist in 1:200 yet.

Here is a pic of the now finished regional gates. With of course enough room for a 757W to get by. This is now what i'll be using for the 4 regional gates at the new airport.

The regional gates are basically big enough for a CRJ-1000 or smaller sized aircraft.

Roof accesses have now been added. There are three that run the length of the roof.

Other roof details I'll be adding soon are pipes of different sorts, venting systems, AC/heat units, lights, antennas/towers, and finally the control tower.

I've had lots of pics of these before but they have been slightly re-worked to fit this airport. These gates are capable of handling Boeing 757-300W or smaller aircraft with a Boeing 757-300W or smaller capable of passing by with no problem.

There will be 12 of these gates at my new airport.

And another with just some different aircraft to show a size difference.

Here is a couple pics of a regional gate next to the regular gate. This way you can see the difference.

When there actually put together in the format they will be when the airport is done the white line will be connected by a in between piece.

I haven't had a chance to update this in a while because of the holidays, and now I just haven't gotten around to getting more supplies since I have to drive over an hour to get to a store that sells what I use.

But I did get around to getting some of the gates put together.

None of those are in the positions they'll be in when finished, but just to get an idea of what it will look like later on.

That would be the Gemini200 Delta MD-88! A great little model!

Unfortunately it's getting rather hard to find now. I'd grab it if you see one, and want one.

Here's staying beautiful.

My first attempt was with your format, I like a lot, but I could not do this kind of airport and connections to the runway and the runway and so I go to this other format

It would be hard to do like the photo but with your style?

thanks!

Well after slaving for hours today the side panels are done! They slant downward away from the regular face of the building giving the airport a more unique look!

It may not look like much, but it literally took me hours to complete! This is a huge step in completing the airport!

The jetways will come out of the main building through the slanting part and to the aircraft.

Now keep in mind that the gates laid out now are just to show in pictures. They aren't where they will be placed when finished. When finished there will be 4 regional gates, 2 wide body gates, and 12 narrow body gates!

Thanks for the link mate,

This is great,

I love how you can fit many planes on it, My diorama ATS only has room for three wide body airliners. My terminal is build from foam board. I love the detailing on the tarmac.

How did you build the jetaways? Ive experimented with card.

Thanks! My goal when building it was to fit the maximum amount of planes in the space I had.

I've actually changed the jetways, and I'm uploading some new pics right now with the new ones. So as soon as they are up in the new post I'll explain what I did.

Here are some new pics!

Some new shots of the new jetways I'm building. None are done yet, but I have a good start. They are made of 5/8" Square Tube - Light Gray ABS Plastic, and 1/2" Square Tube - Light Gray ABS Plastic that can be found here at Kit Kraft inc.

And here is a close up shot of the new (oil stained) tarmac

Can you please point out exactly the "square tubes" you are referring to that you found at that Kit Kraft inc. place? Thanks.

Sorry! Didn't realize they were that hard to find them on their site. I couldn't find them either. I had to do a search for their exact name before i found them again.

Here is the 5/8

Kit Kraft inc., Model Building Materials, Structural Material, ABS Plastic, Square Tubes, 5/8" Square Tube

And here is the 1/2

Kit Kraft inc., Model Building Materials, Structural Material, ABS Plastic, Square Tubes, 1/2" Square Tube

They fit perfectly inside each other, and are the perfect size for a 1:200 jetway.

I considered that at one point. But decided the whole point of building it was for the models I have, so I went with as many gates as possible. Thanks for the comment!

Yup. It's the only place big enough to house it.

Thanks ACJazz! A lot of hard work has gone into it already, and like I mentioned above. Hopefully I'll be able to get some more work done on it now that I'm done with classes this semester.

I like your use of columns for both terminals (includes one destroyed by cats). In addressing the current columns, a base or footing needs to be created for the shaft. This base is the footing that will properly connect the column to the ground. Below are pictures of Norfolk Scope Arena with slanted columns. This modern design does not incorporate the typical crown of vertical columns. Instead, it utilizes the shaft and base to establish smooth continuity. Because this is your custom creation, the sky is the limit.

Ok guys! It's been a while since I had a chance to do any work on my airport. Well today I had a chance to do some work!

A lot of the work went into fixing the roof, where the air vents and such had come lose or were warping. So the roof details have changed a bit since the last photos were taken. I also have made slight changes to my ground foils. The biggest thing I've been working on today is the jetways. I haven't added the ends that will connect to the plane yet, mainly because I haven't figured out how I'm going to do that yet haha..... BUT I've made good progress. As before with the old Jetways they can be moved side to side, up and down, and move in and out. So they can be as high or low as you want them, or they can be as short or long as you want them.

Hopefully I'll have more time this summer to work on this!

Hope you enjoyed the update!

More photos! After I've finished another gate with the improved jetway!
