Default My First Airport

Hi Guys,

Starting a thread, on my first ever airport build.

It's in scale 1:400 and is roughly 4 A4 Pages big.
The foil can be found on my site.
It's going to be for display for my work. (see Below). I work as an Actuary at IAG. :P. So aviation is totally unrelated to my work. but yeh i have a lot of models at my work already, and its a great conversation piece. My cubicle is directly opposite the CFO. So it's pretty cool when they stop by for a chat. this also includes the CEO. Remembering IAG is on of the largest companies in australia and im 21. its a huge wow factor for me.. but enough ranting.

Start my project on a MDF board, with foil printed on 12" by 8 " Lustre photo prints, done from photoenlargements.com.au at $2 per page. pretty cheap.

Hopefully it will turn out ok and i don't get to many problems.

Atif

I started to add some lights, using 6v 3mm grain bulbs, since i cbb using LED's even though they look better, oh and not to mention a toy hammer stolen off my mums daycare to hammer in lights :P
Also added first layer of grass and sand, but you cant see the sand in these pics. Sorry for the bad quality photo's there from my iphone, which doesn't seem to capture the colours very well but... in real life they are green red and yellow. i will take more photos once model is complete with a better camera.

combined both taxiway and runway light sets to give an almost completed light set, powering my model with a dc transformer which can give me 9v/12v/18v/24v with 2Amps of current.

Added my Hangar and Firestation to my model, the hangar is currently too bright since im running on 18v-24v output and the lights are wired in parallel with 18-24v going to the 6-12v bulbs. the firestation is wired in series so its dimmer. i will wire the hangar in series with the terminal later to reduce the light produced.

Made my terminal, Its the same design of my site, but i tried to do something different. What i did was print it out on normal paper, i also then printed it on a transparency paper. On the paper version i cut out the windows using my x-acto knife (the sharp metal scapel looking device :P, which i stabbed myself with last week and its damn f%$#ing sharp, anyway back to the topic).
I then used the paper print with cut out windows to mark out balsa wood and where to cut the windows such that if i paste the paper print ontop of balsa wood, where windows would be there would be holes.once i did this for all sides, i then pasted my paper print over my transparency print with pva glue, such that where the gaps in paper where, the transparency version behind it would make up for. (i.e the windows became transparent but walls didn't, while keeping texture of the windows in tact) then on the roof of the terminal i placed a few grain bulbs, i made a mistake here, since the terminal is modern lookingish..and has blue windows i should of used white LED's, rather than clear grain bulbs, still considering to use LED's but atm cbb unwirind the Grain bulbs.:P might do later at the end. will post some close ups of the terminal itself later.

Added a sheet of water effects over the water area's, got it from ebay, turned out ok. Looks good in the night photo's to me looks really realistic with reflections at night. Doesn’t look that good during the day , but that’s my fault, I tried gluing it down with superglue, big mistake since it dries white, so never use super glue on anything transparent . i should of used PVA since it dries clear. noobie mistake. Did some fashion photography, just looking at some angles.

I've realised ive just posted a lot of night shots, here's on in some light. i put in some 3v lamppost which are about 35mm tall. they are meant to light up but currently aren't , dunno why :@.... working on it. let see if i can get it fixed anytime soon. any suggestions why not would deeply be appreaciated. apart from that also put in some fences, and in these photo's your able to see the water affects sheet and sand.

Future to do list:
- add apron lighting
- fix lamp posts
- modify a first choice control tower
- add my planes and people and gse
- add fire trucks
- add fuel tanks and station
- add airconditioning units to terminal building
- add backdrop
- and some other stuff i cant remember

and a poor quality video

Amazing lightning work!
I would be happy to have something as proffesional as this in my London-Bexley.
Well done mate, and I'm sure we all want to see this airport in service.
Put some models, get one stuck in the hangar and take some shots!

Cheers mate,
Professional Hardly... im sure you can easily do the same, all it takes is a drill and some grainbulbs of ebay. you dont even have to worry about any resistance calcs. although leds look better.
I wish to see the airport in service, but until i move it to my work, i wont be able to put any on... at work i already have all the planes gse and people ready and waiting. who knows you might even get another alliance airport :P i think ive put shots up before of a model in the hangar before.

will post pics up shortly. cheers

Thanks, much appreciated, feels good after spending a few full days fidling with tiny wiring with fat hands, that somebody appreciates the work. the real test will be wen i put planes on the airport to see how it looks. im worried apron lighting wont be enough.

1. Pack the clothes you will need. It's better to have more clothes than less clothes, unless you want to spend your nights washing them.
2. Bring toothbrush, toothpaste, (etc). If you're staying at a hotel, they will provide soap and shampoo. You will have to bring everything else.
3. Bring a brush/comb, etc.
4. Bring something to read/do on the plane.

What happens:

1. You will get to the airport, and you will go to the airline checkin location. You will then get a boarding pass. They will tag your luggage.
2. You will take your luggage to TSA, who will scan it and send it to the airline for you.
3. you will go through security, at which point you will have to remove your shoes, put your metal objects in a bowl, and all your carry-on items in a tray. These will be scanned, and so will you.
4. You will go to the departure gate, and wait for the departure time.
5. The airline will annouce that the plane is loading. They will have different methods for loading the plane - usually either by row or by "section".
6. Board the plane and find your seat. Your seat is assigned, do not move to any other seat at this time.
7. Once the door is closed, you can move if you need to (between two fat people) if there is an empty seat somewhere.
8. When you get to your destination, debark the plane (don't forget all your carryon stuff).
9. Go claim your baggage at the baggage claim area.

Nice little diroma base there... However you really don't want to display your precious models on office walls, very very dangerous...

Hi guys,
Just some updated pics, taken with a Nikkon D300 Digital SLR camera, rather than my iphone, so quality is better and you can actually differentiate between light colours. Enjoy.

Default Re: My First Airport

I was expecting two or three more size increased the project after long time. I'm really sad about to leave model hobby, now I'm feeling like the same, I reboxed all 1/400, my airport box is empty now and waiting to go trash. (my airport is not like that looks like only crowded simple apron)
I hope you can find time to get start once again, you really deserve it. "Planes love" is one of the good things in life.
