Default Help Needed with Landscaping

Hi guys,

I am just wondering if someone could help me with a landscaping issue. On an airport i am plannig, a certain section needs to have a small gradual hill/outcrop. i was initially thinking of paper mache or some sort of plaster to do this, but then have realised i am going to need to put wiring through the hill. How do you guys overcome this?. and also generally shape airport surroundings, as i dont want to build a flat airport and keep some realism. any idea's?

Should be very interesting to see! When I did some landscaping a while back, I just layered cardboard into the shape I wanted and then covered it in construction paper before coating with grass.

It sounds like you need a bigger hill though so if you have any sheets of styrofoam, cut and layer them in the same manner before sanding them smooth and then coating in whatever you want.

Hope that helps!

Hmm styrofoam... nice idea.. easy to work with i guess , but what about the strenghth of the model. and still doesnt help with the level of deep drilling i need to be able to reach and penetrate the mdf base...

I'm not quite sure what you mean... Why does it need to be strong, if it's on an MDF base? And what's this drilling thing you're talking about?

I mean if I put styrofoam ontop of the mdf, I have heard that styrofoam dents really easy or if theres a bit of weight put on it it can compress. The drillin I need to do as I will need to drill through say "styrofoam" through to the base mdf such that i can put wiring through to the top of the landscape. its ok for big drill size but i dont have a 1mm 2mm or 3mm drill bit thats longer than 10 cm. so its hard to drill all the way down on a big hil. just wondering how do i apply lighting on a hill surface. or unless i make an empty shell ontop ... hmm that could work.. THANK YOU...

For the shell idea you could maybe make the styrofoam hill and then cover it in plaster or cement or something before cutting away the styrofoam after. As for drilling through it, you could try drilling through the top and then the rest of the way through the bottom. If It's still too long you could hollow out the bottom/inside first or just poke through with a pencil.

As for lighting, what kind of lights are you putting in? Just LEDs poking out the top or something?

I like the idea of styrofoam then plaster over, will give more realism and then yeh can take foam off after. will look into it. its for my st maarteen model. and lights will be lamp posts and lighting for houses etc.
