Do you have any requirements like specific scale, etc? :-)

I'd like to bring in my New Eastern Valley International, Newport International and Santa Magdalena Airports. Happy New Year!

I've started 2 alliances over the past couple of years, both failed miserably.

Here's the links

GEA, Green Earth Alliance- Home Page

US Airport Alliance- US Airport Alliance

This is how most end up, just deserted.

Lemme say, you're doing the whole Airport Alliance thing wrong. Your first biggest error is that you started this thing alone. It won't last long like that, you gotta start it in a Chat room or something like that with friends. The second is that it looks like you have no control over what the alliance does, or who gets in or not.

Lemme say, almost 5 years after starting BSA with 3 other Wings members, I think the alliance had mostly died down and there isn't much activity (if any). We were a lucky case that managed to cling onto life as long as we did. We had at least 5 others that lived around the same era. For the most part, there was really no point to it (an airport alliance) other than having a pretty logo or something to say you were a member on your airport website.

Krystian (you are Krystian, right?), BSA is probably the only alliance that ever came close to a sucess!

A group of airports that are together and do fantasy flights from each other.

BlueSphere Alliance - Take your travels further... - is one of the longest running alliances, founded by DAC's very own LOT 737-300!

To be honest, BSA wasn't exactly founded by me, Though as one of the 4 founding members, I think the idea should really get credit to Mario DiLorenzo (Marioair on W900), since it was his idea. We did build up the idea and how the alliance did on the W900 Chat when that was still around though. Looking at that list (which has not been updated) is something, a lot of those people I don't even know if they're still posting around anymore!

But yeah, I think a good part of having it is to show members who it might be a smart idea to Privately message another member to plan a Fantasy Flight (rather than having all that crap posted on the forums, that was actually something that most of the founding BSA members agreed on).

Quote:
Krystian (you are Krystian, right?), BSA is probably the only alliance that ever came close to a sucess!
The main reason that BSA actually lasted as long as it did though was mostly because it was better organized from the beginning. Also included was matters within the alliance to vote on, as well as new members to vote in. In the beginning, we also were scale restricted too to 1:500 scale (sort of a response to the diminishing number of 1:500 scale collectors on the forum at the time) A lot of other alliances seriously lacked any such organization (and no, having a freewebs site and forum is not what I mean), and any such structure, not having more than 1 founding member, any restrictions as to who can join (i.e. just not opening the flood gates for everyone). There is also more, but I think that can be learned by looking around at alliances that failed rather quickly, as well as this one huge alliance on Wings created by some fellow that got too big for it's own good just because he did let anyone in.

My opinion, from personal experience is that posting about it in a forum thread is not the best idea to get an alliance out there. Five years ago, if someone did that here on DAC, it likely would have had the same effect on the person as if they stood behind a Rocket Engine while it ignited. I remember when someone noticed it and posted wanting to know about it here. It lead to some interesting series of flame wars. If someone wants to try to get an alliance out there, they should try the same technique that got Kool-Aid the popularity it has now, through the Silent Salesman technique, and by that I mean just planting a link about it in the signature or some information in an airports website. We often had a policy to not advertise the alliance in their own threads or posts just for the reason I talked about earlier.

I hope that my advise will help those who are thinking about it.

The idea is fairly new to me, and I don't have anything concrete about it. But since the idea came up, why not give it a try. If it fails, it fails. If it succeeds, then good.

A few questions though:

1.) What is the objective for this alliance?
2.) How does it operate?
3.) Who operates it?
4.) Is it stressful to operate?
5.) How will it enhance the hobby experience?

If it doesn't cost members anything material, just some fun time... why not?

LOT 737, you seem to have the experience on this. Can you guide the group into building this alliance? Surely you have an idea of what worked and what didnt.

Most of the big ideas I think I covered, you could try to see what could be found here on Wings and DAC using the search function, where I had given similar, but perhaps more detailed advise.

1) Usually, I guess it's a way for the airport builders who do these things called "Fantasy Flights" to network around, basically one member makes a flight with another member using the same aircraft they both just happen to own. Pretty good, as it keeps this type of stuff off the forum, which believe me, aside from the two parties involved, most don't really care about who is flying where and when.

2) I basically described how a more successful one operates in my above posts. Usually following around with that works out ok.

3) I guess this really can run with different systems. BSA's system was that there wasn't really any one member in charge. We all voted for certain ideas, we all proposed certain ideas. Only certain members were given mod statuses on the forum and ability to update the freewebs site (which we really stopped once we had our forum up) for maintenance sakes. I guess there could be something like the EU Presidency where it's a rotating thing, or just one guy on top.

4) Depends on a bunch of things. The most stress I've had was having to defend the alliance when it came under fire here back in 2005 and also having to weed out the occasional spambot on the forum. In the beginning before the forum was made, it was a bit of a pain having to email out "polls" to different members about who to let in, and what policies to have. Once that was more automated, we just had to adjust how voting was done to make up for those who only come by once every blue moon (despite us sending out an email about that.)

5) If you see point #1, it's similar to that of a forum, actually are almost exactly the same. Basically, it's a way to network with other collectors, and you do get to know some of them pretty well by first name this way.

As LOT B733 just said, it is really needed to have certain rules of the alliance.
I can gladly help in orgenizing it, and help creating the website.
I would also like to add my airport to the alliance:
London-Bexley International Airport ( a link is situated in my signature).

Another question, beside doing fantasy flights, which I've already gotten without being in any alliance, is the airports' alliance has any other positive or useful issues?

Thank you,
Jonathan

I still don't see the point. Why are fantasy flights so interesting to people? Seem pointless to me.

I suppose a centralised webpage for pictures would be useful, so people can get inspiration and ideas from each other. It's all on here as well, but it could be organised better on a separate webpage, so you don't have to remember which thread had which pictures and ideas in it.

Well it's not the fantasy flight it's just the fact that we all come together and form an alliance...its cool. Different people have different point of views.

If you think it's just inherently cool, then more power to you.

I don't have a diorama, but may try in the future. If I'm allowed an opinion, a new website could make a contribution by collecting pictures of good dioramas, as well as information on materials and techniques for custom building. Again, all that is available on this website, but it's scattered across multiple threads; putting some tips together in one place would be useful.

I don't have a diorama, but may try in the future. If I'm allowed an opinion, a new website could make a contribution by collecting pictures of good dioramas, as well as information on materials and techniques for custom building. Yeah that's I like the idea.

I suppose a centralised webpage for pictures would be useful, so people can get inspiration and ideas from each other. It's all on here as well, but it could be organised better on a separate webpage, so you don't have to remember which thread had which pictures and ideas in it.
I am working on it but it takes time once i get the website for the alliance up and running, i will add the pictures and links to each and every airport in the alliance.

I cannot wait to see the site! I think if the organizers at the top stay involved and active, the growth of the hobby itself will support the survival and growth of the alliance. Even if only to create a "one-stop shop" for some awesome airports and ideas.

One question I am curious about is: Do all members have fully functioning airports with links to webpages and such? It would seem that would be a prerequisite or will photos and such be compiled on the site with reference to these locations? Or both?

Anyway very very cool!

WOW, What a list!
I think, that one of the "must" things for members is a airport website, an active one.
It is important for the activities of the alliance to have active members which change or do anything new in their site once or more a week.
I have few questions:
1) I think it also important to do "imaginary" flights between the alliance's members. Do both airports need to have the same model for the flights or is it OK only one of them is?
2) All the airlines and aircrafts located in the airport need to be logical? I mean, can a south-eastern airport has a bmi A320?
I think there is suppose to be a logical view. I lately stopped some of my bmi flights because the airline itself had stopped them. Is it a important for you guys?

I do agrre with you TheCreator, i am requesting that all member airports have a functioning website, in order to be able to link to and from the allaince website, and to be able to create that allaince network so that it is easy to communicate and make major decisions.
