Quite impressive. I like the ground foil you've used, where did you source it from?

The terminal foil is sasmd90's by the looks of it. Great job!

Very impressive job for your first attempt. Will look forward to see more pics when you expand your airport.

I was thinking the same, but it looks slightly different to the ones I have from sasmd90...

I'm still looking for the 'right' foil that will work with my setup.

The ground foil is indeed by sasmd90. I used photoshop to bring them into this layout, and make some alterations of my own. I love the fact that his foils are editable... so you can customize them to a certain extent. The whole thing is about 46 inches x 42 inches, which cost me about $30 to have printed on photo paper (in one piece) and laminated at a print shop here.

Yes, it's ever so slightly different... Like I said, I made small changes. I was thinking of weathering it, but then I didn't want to spend money printing it and then realize that i don't like the weathering, so I thought the airport should be nice and new :)

This is what the finished foil looks like.

nice behind your terminal is it wood? WHat type of wood and where you buy it from?
Great model airport by the way.
What did paper did you use also for your ground.
Howd you inter the jetways?
How do you combine all the ground mats together to make it a big thing?
What's the link for the terminal again?

Re: My first attempt at a 1:400 Airport...

Wow lots of questions... ok here we go:

The Ground Foil: It is sasmd90's foils. I brought them from Word into photoshop, where I combined them together into one large foil, plus made some changes like the gate numbers etc. The ground foil is 46 inches by 42 inches, printed onto photo paper and laminated. You can do this at a good print shop, that's what I did. It cost $30. Since it is photopaper and is laminated, you don't need to mount it onto wood.

The Buildings: The buildings are made of lego, not wood. Rock solid lego pieces! I raided my younger brother's lego and made the buildings - few reasons for this: first, I'm not very good at making things out of wood. Secondly, using lego is not only easier, but it makes the buildings very heavy and therefore very stable. The building facades and roofs are also from sasmd90, glued onto the lego. I used HP printing paper for this (not glossy photo paper).

The Jetways: I cut off the little connectors at the ends of the jetways and simply glued the jetways into place.

For the buildings facades and roofs, I used UHU Glue Sticks which worked quite well, whereas to join the jetways to the terminals I used the stronger UHU Liquid Glue.

You can see more pictures of the airport by clicking on the My Photos link in my signature and going to the Airport Diorama set on my Flickr page.

Re: My first attempt at a 1:400 Airport...

nice very clean airport... I suggest to expand the terminal and on the space on the back put a hangar or a cargo center, but I would recomend a hangar...

Great job for a first timer! Love to see more from you.

Re: My first attempt at a 1:400 Airport...

Thanks everyone for the comments... I was quite pleased with it myself but its good to know you liked it :)

jonatan47, I've been thinking along the lines of a hangar myself... but this was largely accomplished in a few days that my business wasn't very busy... With the holiday season over, work has started again and I have less and less time for my planes :(

Thanks for the suggestion though - has anyone made hangars? Any tips or ideas? I was thinking of something large enough to fit two widebodies - is that too unrealistic? For instance, I know that the PIA Hangar we have at Karachi easily swallows a 747 and two 737s...

Excellent job!! You should be very proud of your accomplishment.

How many scales do you collect besides 200 and 400? Or just those two scales?

Re: My first attempt at a 1:400 Airport...

It's a very nice CLEAN airport try to "dirty" it up a little bit add some tire marks here and there to make it a little more realistic. Other than that it's a nice airport and I can't wait to see it when it's finsihed!!

Shanghai 01-06-2009 05:45 PM

Re: My first attempt at a 1:400 Airport...

Following what Swasky said, dirtying it up will make it look much more realistic. I used artistic charcoal for my foil, but you can get creative with your resources.

For an example, look at my airport.

Re: My first attempt at a 1:400 Airport...

B773ER: Yes, I only collect 400 and 200 scale models...

Swasky & Shanghai: You're absolutely right, it looks too pristine! I just haven't had time at all to work on it. By the way, what would be a good way to weather it? Its a photoprint, with matte lamination on it.

jmoegh: Yes, the jetways are glued onto the buildings using liquid UHU glue.

What i did i i took a charcoal pencil and rubbed it on a paper towel or napkin then i took the napkin and rubbed it on the taxyway and runways and what not. However you said that yours is laminated so im not sure if this technique will work for you. but you can give it a shot.
