Evie Air Base- The Makeover

For those that may not know, Evie Air Base is a small military airfield created in 2012, that has been featured in previous threads here, usually with Evie in the title and adventurous storylines to match. The presentations are what I have come to refer to as 'Diorama Photo-stories'. This is where each photo or series of photos in the thread are a diorama scene in themselves that are then sequenced together to tell a tale. Due to the multiplicity of shots each scene may not have the same level of detail and attention you may find with a typical sole diorama scene. The style has become my own and which I like to refer to as 'Supermodelnation' - from Super Model Animation. (Gerry Anderson fans should get my drift!)

Anyway this was my pride and joy airfield as it was then (complete with my initial Maisto Tailwinds collection!!!) Insert embarrassed Emoji yourself...
http://i.imgur.com/cloQ0mv.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/SFgfdwc.jpg

It was my very first diorama which accounts for the slightly rudimentary appearance in part. The airfield has, however, seen plenty of activity since then. It has been "brought to life" through several exciting stories (even one with extra terrestrials and a UFO!) so feel free to Search for the old threads if you missed them. What is possibly missed on viewers is the time, effort and patience required to line up those bloody tiny, fiddly 1/150 figures in each shot and don't get me started on the complexity of those 1/144 aircraft mid-flight scenes! Especially those pyrotechnics shots!!! Remember, no Photoshopping, green screens or digital imagery is used for any of my work, only very basic Windows Media edits where required.

However as with all good things I decided Evie needed a facelift. So I stripped her bare and flung her in the garden and she looked like this for months
http://i.imgur.com/pFfILSM.jpg

Feeling quite sorry for her, I took her back inside and following several more months of painstaking redesign Evie has been significantly improved. Mainly using Kits (or modified kits) and some scratch builds for the buildings.
http://i.imgur.com/9wbiXad.jpg

The tiled cork sheet tarmac was extended.
http://i.imgur.com/2AoSUmV.jpg

Now in my typical Supermodelnation presentational style, I give you the new improved Evie Air Base. Keep watching as random unrelated events continuously unfold here.

Daylight finally broke on this special morning. It was the Opening Day of the refurbished Evie Air Base. All was quiet around the base.
http://i.imgur.com/JcHwbhB.jpg

Heavy trucks with trailer loads of goods and supplies for the new base roll past the main gates
http://i.imgur.com/yYDIwbx.jpg

They pull up at the Secondary gates
http://i.imgur.com/GfbMLRU.jpg
They are cleared through security
http://i.imgur.com/CkRGVfT.jpg

and then through the internal perimeter gates
http://i.imgur.com/wCSfMwD.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/pX99OuL.jpg

They soon pull into the maintenance hangar at the far end of the airfield which was the location of the former Project-X hangar where it is rumoured that Evie housed a functioning UFO with extra terrestrials. Suggestions of the relocation of the UFO to a new underground bunker at the redesigned base are denied and information remains classified. The official position is that the Project-X Programme has since been wound down. https://cdn.websitetoolbox.com/image...ilies/wink.gif
http://i.imgur.com/PfnAY4V.jpg

The base remains pretty inactive with no planes, vehicles or jets on site at this time
http://i.imgur.com/HhM2YLp.jpg

The new Evie Air Base looks resplendent in the clear weather
http://i.imgur.com/VB8Mepj.jpg
The design provides much more space for the planes and provides a more spacious layout. I think it looks neater than before anyway. Not perfect...but neater.

The base features a brand new Air Traffic Control Tower and Terminal building. Flags of the three NATO permanent states- UK, USA and France can be seen flying to the left. Flags of an additional 5 main NATO states- Belgium, Canada, Germany, Australia and Italy are also flying proudly in the wind. It has a new Apron stand for up to two large military transports and beside that is a large maintenance/storage hangar. The former Service Entrance building has been relocated to the far Eastern end of the base and is back to its original use as the airport Fire station
http://i.imgur.com/UsYTnrI.jpg

Note Runway 35 is now renumbered Runway 28 following the UK's Civil Aviation Authority's evaluation of shifts in the Magnetic poles, which is a rare but factual occurrence!!https://cdn.websitetoolbox.com/image...es/biggrin.gif
http://i.imgur.com/VFuwXBj.jpg

To the West of the airfield is a new Apron stand for jets and smaller aircraft. Two Hardened Aircraft Shelters (HAS) have been built to hold the Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) fighters that are on 24 hour standby for any potential "scramble" event. 2 new Communication towers and 2 helipads also now feature, together with a split level car park.http://i.imgur.com/NfkVG3A.jpg

Finally, a unique state of the art Security observation bridge has been built beside the Control Tower for round the clock security surveillance of the base
http://i.imgur.com/bETxhe6.jpg

Suddenly wailing police sirens broke the mid-morning silence...

Looks like the airbase is housing some top secret possible black ops projects. Lots of suspicious trucking activity.
Does Lockheed Martin work out of here?

I'd laugh if a Cessna 172 rolled out the hangar :)

Re: Evie Air Base- The Makeover

Thanks for the comment HoRAD. However, the French membership status with NATO is not as straightforward as you may be suggesting.
<O:p</O:p
NATO was founded on 4th April 1949 with 12 original members of which France was one. But surprisingly on 11th March 1966 the then French President Charles de Gaulle infuriated the US and UK by suddenly pulling France out of the NATO’s military command "to preserve French independence in world affairs" and prevent France taking direction from US Generals. France withdrew forces from NATO command and the NATO headquarters moved from Paris to Brussels, but France assured NATO partners it would continue to take part in the defence of Western Europe in event of a Soviet attack. It also retained forces in the then West Germany.
<O:p</O:p
However, in June 2008 a series of French national debates on a White paper on national defence outlined two main objectives – to increase French presence and influence in the Alliance and to facilitate strengthening of Europe’s defences. There were also several conditions outlined for France in relation to NATO. The government having then engaged its responsibility on a foreign policy declaration under article 49 (1) of the Constitution, the decision was subject to a vote in their National Assembly, which was then approved in March 2009. France officially announced its full participation to NATO military structures at the Strasbourg-Kehl Summit on 4th April 2009, Forty-three years after its departure. So it is once again a NATO member.
<O:p</O:p
Hope this helps clarify why Evie Air Base proudly flies the French national flag along with the other key member states.
<O:p</O:p
Don’t you just love it when reality extends, blends and complements fiction!! :D<O:p</O:p

Sirens echo around the base as the Police outriders escort appear through the chain fencing

Bangkok Lady I dedicate this particular post to you. Thanks for the inspiration!!

Thanks for the comments guys! These are always truly appreciated. I hope to keep the thread interesting with new details (and twists and turns) as we watch events unfold on the base.

The doors open just enough to make out what is inside…

A Cessna???!!!
https://i.imgur.com/XbV37mI.jpg

A Cessna (L-19) O-1 Bird Dog to be precise…but this one had truly seen better days
https://i.imgur.com/5OWA9wR.jpg

"Built in 1949, this particular O-1 was delivered to Evie in 1950 when the base was just a short grassy strip in the middle of an open, muddy field. Back then it was the very first plane to land at Evie and formed part of NATO’s first US Army air wing deployed to the UK (by then, the US Army Air Force had not yet been separated)..."
https://i.imgur.com/516uSAG.jpg

"In the early 1950s it saw battle in Korea finding the enemy and orbiting low overhead, usually taking much fire itself, as you can see, whilst directing artillery or attack aircraft fire onto the enemy via its radio..."
https://i.imgur.com/O958DgO.jpg

"In the early 60s it saw plenty of action in Vietnam as a reconnaissance and artillery spotter plane mainly performing front line utility roles". This one's bizarre yellow livery was to make it distinct for friendlies. Obviously, a very bad idea resulting in multiple enemy fire sustained
https://i.imgur.com/IIkGAo3.jpg

The guests listened attentively to the historical background narrative broadcast over the base loudspeakers
https://i.imgur.com/8BjFgPE.jpg

"There were suggestions to restore the body to its former glory days but it was decided that retaining its current bullet ridden appearance with all its battle scars was deemed a more fitting tribute to honour this old bird as the Base’s first"

The symbolic gesture of the old giving way to the new was not missed on the onlookers
https://i.imgur.com/sXwOw1q.jpg

"Following its brief appearance at the 2013 Evie Air Show, the F-15 65th Aggressor was relocated from Nellis AFB to Evie to continue Dissimilar Air Combat Training (DACT) now for NATO over the Baltics"

Re: Evie Air Base- The Makeover

This next set of posts is my small dedication to the victims of the recent natural disasters across the Caribbean and U.S.A. May those lost rest in perfect peace. May those that survived find solace and hope in the months to come. We continue to think of you all.

With the devastating scenes of the recent Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma fast becoming yesterday’s news, the effort for recovery and rebuilding has only really just begun. The Hurricanes were recorded as the most intense in living memory.
Hurricane Harvey dumped an unprecedented 27 trillion gallons of water on Texas and Louisiana. Parts of Houston received almost 53 inches of rain, breaking a record for rainfall in continental United States.
In its wake, Irma left at least 23 dead in mainland United States and more than 30 dead across the Caribbean as it stretched from the small islands of Barbuda and Antigua, through Haiti, Bahamas and Cuba and on to the U.S.A's Jacksonville, Florida, to Charleston, South Carolina, leaving over 1 million homes without electricity, total destruction and human loss in its wake.

Following the call to specific NATO bases to provide additional resources and logistical support, the newly reopened Evie Air Base swung into action with a major relief operation. The biggest Evie has seen to date. It started with the arrival of Military flatbed trucks carrying containers full of food, fuel, clean water and other essentials. These were the last set to be delivered
https://i.imgur.com/jfK0bHc.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/8UKwNLK.jpg

A large Military Tadano GR-500 crane is immediately put into action to offload the goods

This one is also successfully placed
https://i.imgur.com/zRYuX57.jpg

After several round trips the final set of crates are brought in. These contain medical supplies and mechanical equipment for essential building repairs. As these trucks pull in Forklifts are busy on site offloading the containers

Phase 1 of this operation is going well and is on schedule

https://i.imgur.com/wiyheDc.jpg

The Evie Relief Operations Supervisor received a late call from the relief co-ordination centre at RAF Lakenheath to expect an additional hardware delivery to support the relief effort, which explains the second C-17 redirected to Evie

If you're calling me a 'Big Kid' Jan....er...guilty as charged!! :o Sometimes our hobby gets way too serious and a bit of light hearted fun is always a good thing. Glad to bring some form of entertainment.

Some of the buildings are laser cut card kit builds some are plastic kits. I modified most buildings like the HAS hangars giving them quite a unique look. Same with the crates/containers. Some items I just built from scratch. Was fun to build and even more fun doing these creative scenes. More to follow. Thanks for commenting.

This post ends this mini story but I hope it helped maintain our focus and thoughts on the plight of many that suffered and are still suffering today and possibly for weeks, months and years to come.
They remain in our thoughts and we wish them all the very best.

Over the following weeks, a growing concern for NATO was Russia. A call came through to Evie Air Base to step up all relevant counter-measures...

Thanks Grecog70 and to all that have provided some great comments. I too am enjoying this creation very much. You may notice a slow down in posts a little though as I have recently started a new job which is consuming most of my down time. Whenever I can grab some spare time I will continue here.

Following the initial notification calls, a formalised communication memo was sent through to Evie Air Base. Evie Commanders opened up the document to view its contents:

Re: Evie Air Base- The Makeover

Ain't it going a little bit too far into poltics?

Moreover, there are no "Russian Air Forces". Nobody in NATO would use this form, by all means. They will probably speak of the Air Force of the Russian Federation. And there also is no "NATO Allied airspace". They may speak at one moment of the airspace of one or another country which is a member of the alliance.

The "whole, free and at peace" stuff is a really good joke.

If you want to play it like this, than make it look real. Or try to copy a real document. :)

IkeIbekwem 10-16-2017 05:01 PM

Re: Evie Air Base- The Makeover

Thanks HoRad, I giggled to myself when I read your post. But not in a rude way. When I create these scenes sometimes I wonder if anyone is even paying attention, so good to get responses that provoke thought and generate further discussion.

As for the memo it is in fact extracts taken from a "real document". Of course, I did edit some details and incorporate some artistic licence. But the content originates from the NATO Warsaw Summit Communique issued by Heads of State and Government in the North Atlantic Council, July 2016. The document was very comprehensive so my extracts were just a few snippets rearranged into my fictional memo. But the "whole, free and at peace" line is actually in that NATO document!! And yes, I too laughed!

In reality the document I created is a precursor, tee-up for the next few episodes where I will feature Russian aircraft (for the first time in any Evie production) so please keep watching. Note, mine was not a reference to the "Russian Air Force" but as stated, to their 'Air forces' which do exist, but thanks for the fact check anyway.

If this was a movie I'd have shoved in disclaimers all over the credits. But honestly, I'm having way too much fun creating these scenes to even care about perceived political motivation. Admittedly, by its nature, it may reflect a degree of political persuasion. But wholly unintended ;).

This thread does not claim to be "real" but does insist on being entertaining. To put things in context, In a former Evie adventure (not posted on this forum and with the old site design) those 1.5cm figures built and launched full sized Thunderbirds 1 and 2 aircraft AND a Star Wars X-Wing fighter from the Evie Air base runway!! So that's how "realistic", my runaway imagination gets sometimes, so please just roll with it or you'll miss all the fun.

Here's the proof! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMczltklW44

Apologies, I did say I would hit delays hence the long silence...Well on with the story

https://i.imgur.com/3WbOGP2.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/mFqoPui.jpg

The E-3 Sentry, when at altitude, has a top down 360 degree view of the horizon to provide a detect, identify, track and intercept of air and sea targets simultaneously if required
https://i.imgur.com/oW0iS97.jpg

The large primary radar is housed in a huge 30 feet (9.1 metre) in diameter rotodome mounted above the aircraft which scans at 6 revolutions per minute, using powerful interleaving algorithms, with a detection range of more than 320km
https://i.imgur.com/la6VD76.jpg

AWACS radar system improvements means upgraded capability to identify and track land, sea and air target threats with even smaller radar cross sections such as small jets and missiles including stealthy targets
https://i.imgur.com/CzxVxKs.jpg

The E-3 plays a major role in NATO enforcement of air space control, no-fly zones and command and control capability. This one was the first deployment from Evie and is cleared for take off

The Sentry was recently deployed to Evie to bolster the existing E-2C Hawkeye Airborne Early Warning already operating out of the base

Excellent pics....and so very entertaining.
Thanks for posting the story.

Appreciate the comment Bangkok Lady La, and yes each picture scene truly is a painstaking labour of love. Tweezers and sometimes needles are used for positioning. But it is a real joy to create. Thanks anyway.

Been absent for a bit and expect to be for a while but managed to pull together this brief "end of season episode". Looks like there will be a bit of a break but promise more excitement from Evie for certain.

With early airborne warning systems monitoring the skies the base prepped its existing assets as more were expected and already on their way to bolster Evie's defences.

Ground crews worked hard to ready the Fighting Falcons on the apron. At this point further commentary hardly seems necessary as the actions convey the seriousness of their preparations

Yes it has been a while...Apologies. But it's started getting warmer now and with some downtime at work, it means I can sneak in a quick episode...or two.
As always I love to crossover my posts with real-life world events, so what can be bigger than the precarious situation currently being faced in Syria. We continue to send our thoughts and prayers to the innocents, most especially the children, that have paid a heavy price and still continue in their suffering today.

As the world holds its breath in anticipation of the unfolding events in Syria and the impending danger of a Western response and a potential Russian counter to what is already a volotile and complex arena, activities at Evie Air Base are stepped up.

Thanks for all the comment Airlineguy. Greatly appreciated!

Following the weekend's co-ordinated military strike on Syria, Western governments grapple with all the political fallout and the huge media storm in their various countries. The 'whys and wherefores' of military action are being debated with strong arguments on both sides. As this all plays out, the silent Monday evening skies above Evie are broken with the deafening sound of returning fighters from their Middle Eastern forward posts.

Sorry guys it has been, what seems like forever since my last update. Work and other life stuff is making it impossible at the moment and this will be a short one. However, you know how I love to cross-over real world events with this thread so I just could not resist the recent events of this week....

Breaking News of the RAF Tornados final return flight to the UK after 40 years of service in missions over Bosnia, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, Libya, Syria to mention just a few. The aircraft saw quite a lot of action and this week, what was reported as the final return flight from RAF Akotiri in Cyprus into RAF Marham in Norfolk, UK was all over the news and this was an opportunity I didn't want to miss.

http://www.forces.net/news/raf-torna...ions-last-time

However, what you did not know was a small contingent of Tornado jets had just concluded what was, a final secret mission (Operation Overlord) over Northern Syria. So what you see today is the true final RAF Tornado return flight.https://cdn.websitetoolbox.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

The group of three jets was now on its final leg back to the UK as they raced backed over the English Channel.

Hehehe :o Guilty as charged DC-10 Tony! That was Evie 1.0 and as rudimentary as that design version was, I really loved some of the adventurous storylines that came out of it. This upgrade is hopefully a bit more mature but still trying not to take itself too seriously. This hobby is supposed to be fun too right? Sometimes its not just about how realistic your layouts are but rather how creative you can be with it. But definitely no UFOs this time round LOL

Re: Evie Air Base- The Makeover

This last week was indeed a special moment in history. On Thursday 4th April, NATO Foreign Ministers met in Washington D.C. to mark the Alliance's seventieth anniversary. It was truly a special occasion and right across the globe several NATO events were held to commemorate this historic milestone. At NATO HQ the Allies walked together...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yI9uTpFq7zI

At Evie Air Base, during the week, a number of meetings, speeches and ceremonies were held by top military officials to mark the event. This led up to a special weekend finale providing airmen, ground crew their family and friends a chance to unwind and enjoy themselves.

Days before, heavy machinery had been brought in and construction staff worked round the clock on the base to make it a reality.

As the artists performance drew to a close, suddenly the loud speakers were drowned out by an even louder almighty roar...

I think you meant to say 'a couple of hundred' as hundreds is a noun so you cannot say 'a couple' or ' a few hundreds' in the same way you cannot say 'two hundreds', or it is part of a determinative phrase.

But hey...hundred...hundreds...millions...billions... who's really counting?!
