Default !/500 Herpa stuff for 1/400 planes?...

Has anyone used the 1/500 Herpa Airport sets for 400 scale aircraft? Does it look completely out of scale? I think the 400 jetways from Gemini look a bit big for my 400 aircraft and I like the look of the Herpa buildings. Any info would be of great help, thanks!

Yes, herpa GSE works fine for the most part.
1:400 scale aircraft with 1:500 scale GSE - a set on Flickr

Also look at my other post with other photos on Wings when the subject was brought up:
Little question - Wings900 Discussion Forums

Since most of the stuff is Generic, and the small size that they are anwyays the scale difference really doesn't show up as badly as it would when comparing Japanese/British HO Scale and International HO Scale. Likewise, I've seen people use Dragon 1:400 scale GSE years back (when it was widely available) very nicely with 1:500 scale aircraft.

It works for me.
I put 1:500 Herpa's airport buses and lavatory truck on my diorama.
Seems it fits my expectation.

Example can be seen at: http://www.diecastaircraftforum.com/...l-airport.html

The 1:500 stuff from Herpa fits ok with 1:400 models, BUT I find that the difference in scale becomes much more evident when 1:500 GSE is used with 1:400 widebodies, ie 747 and A380.

I fully disagree, I find that it tends to actually work better than it did on their intended 1:500 scale aircraft, in some cases. The problem is, the case changes with the aircraft due to the non-adjustable nature of the GSE. Some stuff will work great on a 757, but will look silly with a 747.

Strangely enough, IMO the stuff seems to work perfect with wide bodies, like 747s, 767s, and A300s than narrow bodies too. You can see that via my photos. The only stuff where usability gets really bad is the Catering truck. If to be used with 1:400 without modification, then the person would be best off using it with something like an A32X or a 757. Most other types are too high or too low to make it work without looking a little odd. And Belt loaders are hard to work with too, as they're too high (it was a problem in 1:500 too) for narrow bodies.

If one could use GJ or DW GSE, they'd be in good shape, but if they had to find GSE right away, the herpa stuff will pass fine.

For a start, the Herpa tugs and buses in 1:500 are too small to be used with 1:400...the B747's nosewheel is higher than the tug itself and the passenger bus is only slightly higher...the Herpa 'high' stairs only line up with the front (L1) door of a 1:400 767, but is either too high or too low to line up with any other type, in my experience. The catering trucks are far too small too, BUT, I must say the FMC baggage loaders in the Herpa scenix series are just right. I might be wrong with the above or I may just be too pedantic, but I wouldn't use the above with 1:400 aircraft.

OK, got the message loud and clear the GSE will look too small, thanks. How about the buildings? Contemplating getting the large Herpa Airport starter set, just don't want to waste all that money if it looks too small. I they look a bit small, that's OK. Not sure how far off they would be.

The buildings in my opinion are fine. Opposed to the GSE, buildings have a better scale tolerance in both scales.
The terminal buildings, freight centre, car park etc look fine next to the 1/400 aircraft. I use these buildings alongside the GJ buildings and I think its passable. My biggest complaint about the Herpa terminal is the drab grey colours that really don't inspire too much excitement.

The buildings should be OK for 1:400...and I agree with Bangkok Lady La that the Herpa buildings are a bit drab. They are perfect for depicting 'older' 60s and 70s style architecture though.
