Default Bay Creek Int'l Airport 1:500 (Under construction)

Hi everyone,
I wanted to share the construction of Bay Creek International with this great forum, after all, it has been thanks to your wonderful dioramas that I have started this project (both here and W900).

Some may know I built a 1:200 scale airport a few years ago, this one has nothing to do with it. On the contrary to the other diorama, this time planes are secondary, they are just part of the scenery, focusing more on the airport itself.

I am paying a lot of attention to details and I am enjoying every minute I spend building it.
It has been a month since I started, but I had nothing to show until now.

I will be updating this post as I get things done.

************************************************** ***********
Airport layout:

November 4th, 2012
Already designed. It will have a bit of runway, taxiways, 2 Widebody gates (1 with jetway), 4 Narrowbody gates (2 with jetways) and 2 Widebody cargo gates.

************************************************** ***********
Ground foils:

November 4th, 2012
I have just finished making the ground foils, I will be printing them next week.

************************************************** ***********
Airport Lighting:

- Runway lights: White & Green Optic fiber
- Taxi lights: Green & Blue Optic fiber

- Working Approach lights: Red LEDs
- Appron lights: White LEDs
- Streetlights: Amber LEDs

November 4th, 2012
Only missing resistors and more wires:

************************************************** ***********
Airport buildings:

November 4th, 2012
Will have a Terminal with skytrain, car park, a control tower, Cargo terminal, Fire/Rescue, Fuel depot and buildings for GSE and others.

************************************************** ***********
Vehicles and GSE:

November 4th, 2012
I plan to have the following vehicles and GSE (might add more):

- Cars
- Taxis
- Buses (Airport, Urban and coaches)
- Trucks
- Police cars & vans
- Firetruck and rescue vehicles
- Follow me cars & vans
- Tugs
- Conveyors
- Cargo loaders
- Luggage trucks and carts
- Stairs
- Maintenance & Repairs
- Lavatory
- Fuel trucks, refuelling pumpers.
- GPU, Air cond, Starters.

CARS
Still many cars to be hand painted. I chose these instead of Herpa's because they are more (100pcs per set), they're cheaper, and they give me the chance to make custom cars/vehicles. They also add more variety.

1:500 scale.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Now GSE. First of all, thanks again to Claudio Br and SADman since most of the GSE here was bought from them, you can see they ended up in good hands.

I am pretty satisfied with Herpa's GSE, but I have decided to add some details such as wheel rims, lights, improved windows..etc..I know it's such a small scale, although, I am not in a hurry

I will be posting pictures of the finished GSE here:

Quote:
Nothing much to add here except for a red light on the back.

Quote:
Not sure about that orange "light", should I just paint it?
I might paint the rims as well.

Quote:
I am very happy with these little trucks, this is how they were originally:

************************************************** ***********

That's all for now.

Thanks Kris!

****************************************
New updates!

I went to the city and did a successful tour to some hobby shops. I found a 50x50 cms grass mat, grass powder and the best, 2 sets of "vineyards" in 1:87 that work perfectly as trees in 1:500! ( I didn't even know they were vineyards, I had to google it later ).
I also bought the wiring for the lighting.

**************************************

In addition, I kept on improving Herpa's GSE and customizing the vehicles:

Quote:
These follow me cars were really hard to make in 1:500, please excuse the crappy squares

*********************************************

PD: I cannot edit the main post, is there a way of doing that? Thanks.

Thanks guys!

I mostly use permanent markers.
Some of the cars were given a base layer with acrylic paint (sprayed), but most of them got their main color by using permanent markers of many different colors.

I use fine point markers for the windows, wheels, lights and any other small details.

I have 20+ markers with different point sizes and colors (blue, red, black, green, silver, gold, white...) including this useful set:

Right now the project is running slow because of studies but I plan to resume the construction soon.
The base panel is already set and ground foils have been printed and added to it. I have started installing the runway and taxiway lighting as well.

Thank you smoothjazz.

Only 3 days to resume normal construction speed

Some updates:

Background foils have been designed and are ready to be printed.

I have purchased more GSE and vehicles. More cars have been painted and GSE improved. This seems to never end 'cause I am always wishing for more detail. I mean, a month ago I was happy with the finished GSE shown in the pictures above, now I am adding even more details like doors and even turn signals! (Honestly, I think I might be a bit obsessed )

A member from wings900 gave me an idea for making my own tractors and tugs. I used plasticine for the mould and pured hot melt glue to it. The result is of course not as good as his (he used Polyurethane Liquid Plastic in a silicone paste mould), but it fits my needs. The white tractor is the "low cost" custom made tractor . One positive thing about this material is that if you leave some parts unpainted (i.e. windows), they look transparent.

you have patience, to do that work on little objects by hand.

a small suggestion - the black cars need some contrast between the windshield and body.

Thanks! I thought about painting the windows of the black cars with a silver marker, but I don't like to use this color for windows (If the windows are already painted like some Herpa vehicles I leave them like that, but if I have to paint them I prefer black)

Here's a real picture:
http://www.satimagingcorp.com/galler...-houston-2.jpg
The windows look dark to me.

If there's a way of adding that contrast without using silver I'm all ears!

Great work there.
Your right - the Herpa GSE lacks detail but still is great. I use their GSE for my progressive 1;400 airport and I can handle the size differences.
The Marker Pens are a great idea...I'll try that.

here is a pic of my fleet of GSE - mostly 1:400 DW and GJ with a few Herpa pieces amongst them all.

I love the new modifications done to the herpa GSE, it looks very nice, in some cases, even very reformed.

The custom "moulded" GSE that nathanbennett on W900 showed is a great idea, that member certainly deserves a big pat on the back as it helps a lot in making more sturdier GSE rather than the ol' fashioned paper.

Some new updates:

- There will be two main handling companies offering services at the airport. One being a fictitious company run by the airport and the second one being SAS Ground Services.

Most of the SAS vehicles and equipment were given a more adequate base paint:

I am currently painting them, you know, lights, windows, wheels...and so on.

- Background foils are now ready:

You can see the first design at the bottom-right corner. I took those pics by myself but once printed they didn't look pretty well so I switched to the background I got from the net.

- Most of the lights have been installed:

This is just a part of it.

- As a bonus pic, here's a preview of the foils:

Still a long way to go, I have to add wear and marks, some signs, and of course the buildings.

----------------------------------------------

I am now adding the sound system and building the main terminal and the rest of the buildings. I am running a bit slow though (Exams are coming up, again)

Thanks Fiideell.
As stated on the first post I am using the following lights:

- Runway lights: White & Green Optic fiber
- Taxi lights: Green & Blue Optic fiber

- Working Approach lights: Red LEDs
- Appron lights: White LEDs
- Streetlights: Amber LEDs

I forgot to add the building lighting.

For the first two, I made some small holes on the ground and then inserted the fiber optic from the bottom to the top. This is such a tedious work (it depends on how many lights you want to have). You can see this on the third picture. Every fiber optic wire starts from the same place, where a light source is connected, a color LED in this case.

Then for the blinking approach lights, I used a premade circuit with an integrated chip that controls the blinking. In other words, I took them from one of those Christmas hats with LEDs . Although I had to weld some broken wires and added a new battery box. This circuit can also be seen on the 3rd picture.

I wanted to make a circuit connecting the appron lights and the building lighting, using LEDs, but I was able to get some premade LED circuits for Christmas decoration. I am finally using a small reading light modified with a 3mm LED for each flood light, and the premade circuits for the lights inside the buildings and the streetlights (These last in amber color)

I will upload pictures as soon as I have them installed, I can't tell you when though.

Hope I've been helpful.

Hi everyone, after a lot of work I can say that almost all the GSE and vehicles are done.

Cars:

Taxis:

Buses:

Police:

Excuse the sleeping cop

Refuelers:

Fire and rescue:

Seaking Helicopter

I had this Micromachines Seaking from my childhood and after checking the scale chart I realized it was aprox. in 1:500 scale:

I could not use it with those ugly colors and wheels, so I customized it: (Click on the links to see the pictures)

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/o...PORT/seak2.jpg

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/o...PORT/seak3.jpg

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/o...PORT/seak4.jpg

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/o...PORT/seak5.jpg

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These are some of the stickers I am using for the GSE and diorama. All of them are custom made.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next update will include all the GSE , separated into 3 fleets:

- SAS Ground Services
- Bay Creek Handling
- Lufthansa

That will conclude the presentation of all the vehicles and GSE. From that point I will be showing pictures of the actual airport and its construction. As you know, the base panel is set, as well as the foils and most of the lights.

As I said before, this is the last post showing the GSE and vehicles. I have finally finished painting and customizing all of them:

Trucks:

Bay Creek Handling:

SAS Ground Services:

Lufthansa fleet:

Quote:
These are the vehicles they have hired from Bay Creek Handling to assist their planes. The orange De-Icers are not from BCH though, they come from a private company esclusively offering winter services.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The main terminal is completed at 85%. The Fire & Rescue station is nearly finished as well. Hope you like the GSE. If you have any question, lemme know.

I confess, I might be a bit obsessed with the details

Finished jetway:

I have added the following:

- Air conditioning unit (ACU) with hose.

- Details inside the jetway, such as a door, window and even a fire extinguisher

- Adverts, HSBC and a Sixt ad inspired in this:
http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/9355/503h.jpg

- The stairs and door Herpa forgot to put.

- Gate number.

- Passengers and stairs inside the bridge.

I might paint a caution line at the edge of the jetway and ACU.

I am now making the other 2 jetways. Remember this is 1:500!

Well now, this will be an special update, I have finally finished the interiors of the terminal, and I decided to take some pictures before placing the roof.

I am not pretty satisfied with the pictures to be honest, it looks way better in real life, pictures do not show the real size, they show everything oversized. Each red seat is aproximately 12 milimeters large and the total length of the terminal is just 19 cms.
Also, after seeing the pictures, I am strongly considering buying more 1:500 figures, and getting rid of the plasticine people . Anyways, the teminal would be located at the further corner of the diorama, so good figures would't make a big difference.

I suggest you to read the map first so you will know what you're looking at on the following pictures.
One last thing, please forget about anything else on the pictures, the outside isn't finished, and those Tente (it is not Lego) pegs will be properly hided.

Hi all, after nearly 6 months of work (not continuous). Bay Creek International Airport is finally finished and opened to public.

Please read:
I have spent the whole day preparing and taking the pictures. These are only a few, I recommend you to take your time to see each picture carefully as the airport is full of details, I even left some of the pictures at their original size (right click open/view image).
As you might know, they airport is fully lighted and also includes sounds. Pictures and videos will follow up in the next few days.

Only 5 planes you put so much detail into it remember an airport can't be an airport if you don't have the planes.

I am afraid I disagree with that, I do have the planes actually, I have 15 planes and the diorama has 8 gates, I can put one plane on each gate and the rest could be put on the taxiways and runway. However, I think that an overloaded airport doesn't look realistic at all, unless you're basing your diorama on a big airport in rush hour (e.g. Heathrow) which is not the case.

Many airports do normally have a lot of empty gates, and I think that gives the airport a nice touch. But that is just my point of view
