Default Dowse National - 1:400 US 1960s Airport

Following on from my previous thread (http://www.diecastaircraftforum.com/...-markings.html) which didn't garner any helpful info I have continued to look at old photos and begun the layout for my new 1:400 scale US 1960s airport.

I've chosen the 1960s because my collection is mainly US classics and because as airports transitioned to the jet-age a lot of new and interesting layouts / gate types were in use - unlike today where simple piers tend to predominate.

This isn't the first model airport I've made (see Imogenia International 1:600 Scale Model Airport) however it is my first in 1:400 scale. I don't have huge amounts of room so am not recreating a real airport but instead am designing my own realistic airport. That means no stupidly small runways. In fact no runway at all. The design is going to be a two pier airport with 22 gates.

I have begun to do the ground foils using MS Word and you can see below the beginnings. At the moment I'm just designing the A3 foils and working out how they can fit together. Here's a general overview from last week. Note there were lots of errors at this stage which needed fixing:

I'll make the terminal and piers out of wood. There will be two taxiways beyond the piers. Gatewise there are:

5 gates for 707s/DC-8s
10 gates for 727s
6 gates for large props
1 gate for a DC-3

As you can see there are several different kinds of gates. On the left are four side on gates for 707s like those seen at ORD, SFO and JFK in the 60s:

In the middle of the piers are the prop gates some side on (like at MIA and others) and some circles (like at MDW):

On the right are pure jet gates at an angle. I haven't decided which gates will get airbridges yet:

These are mainly black and white layouts so far as tests and I have done quite a bit more since these were shot and will post them later on. At present I'm thinking that I'll stick the paper to wood and then cover it with a clear wrap. I am unsure if this is going to be too glossy but not sure of any alternatives.

Can't wait to see it all play out, you could do a lot with this set up for sure.

Here is the second cut of the ground foils. Most of the gates and taxiways are now marked correctly. Still to do is work on some of the jet gates on the right pier and the detail for the gates the Electra's are parked at.

Also I need to modify the taxiway colours and put in some more details.

I have now finished the ground foils and begun to print them in full colour so the next step is to work out how to add aging (planning on using a soft pencil for oil marks) and how to stick and cover them to the wood surface.

For the sticking, try using spray mount. Looking pretty good though are these all printed on A4 paper? what did you use to make it?

Spray mount? Does that stick it to the wood well?

The sheets are A3 and I simply used MS Word. I had some files which I believe are commonly available on the web and I used these as a starting point. The boxes for concrete are text boxes which use an image for their background (garnered as screengrabs from GoogleEarth). The lines are just the usual drawing tools in Word.

It has been easier than I expected actually. The only tricky thing is getting the lines to meet when they cross pages especially as you have to take into account that printers never print to the edge of a page. To get around that I have to treat the first concrete row around the edge as wastage to be trimmed with a guillotine after printing.

Quite impressive you managed that in something like MS Word, very nice. Yes spray mount will stick it to wood, apply the spray mount to the paper. This is what you want:

Nostalgic theme, I really like your airport and classic plane. You have many hard work, need to increase the airport facilities and terminal, unable to buy to these ancient facilities, you can make your own. Wish you success!

Cheers all. I'm still working on it. I've been trying to look into either somehow laminating the pages or getting it printed to vinyl but its too expensive so I think I'll just have to stick with A3 paper au natural.

Probably won't get a chance to do anymore though for a few weeks.

You may wish to get a slightly heavier stock paper. Most "printer paper" is 20lb paper, look for something closer to cover paper or card stock, 60-70lb. Use your printer's pemium settings, the ink will soak better into the paper (and give it a chance to dry before stacking it). A good flat finish won't have the "gloss" look common to printer paper, and the heavier paper will lie down at the edges and want to curl less when you spray the adhesive to it.

Thanks for that. I had been looking for A3 card but I haven't been able to find anything in that size that is good enough (or at a passable price). I'm a bit out of ideas at the moment other than going with standard A3.

Success I have procured 9 A3 sheets of 220gsm thickness A3 card (standard paper is 80 gsm) which are perfect as though cardy they can still go through the laserprinter. The first 3 are printed in colour and look good.

Before printing I also added gate signs to them.

220gsm is 60lb paper in the US. You may want to check stationary/office supply stores or places that sell engineering and drafting supplies.

Hi all - I got some time two weeks ago to rebuild the area holding my prospective airport up and last week to print out the colour sheets of card. At the weekend I used spray mount to stick them to the new now unbowed wood surface. I'm not sure when I'm going to get a chance to work on the terminal buildings - it may be sometime away, however you can see that there is one straight and one angled pier. I do have foils for the currently blank second taxiway area too but haven't printed them yet.

I'm planning on some of the gates having airbridges with the side on gates 1-4 perhaps having front and rear airbridges as there were at a few 1960s ports (like SFO and JFK).

Here are some shots of how it looks:

This got put on the backburner for a time, however I am back at it with some modifications. Between June and now my collection of globals (which uses this space also) has expanded rather dramatically and so now the airport has to share the space it has. That's not a major problem except there is a little less room so I've had to redesign the diorama making the piers shorter and deleting 5 gates.

I have also worked on a background photo to hide the models behind and with the help of airport diorama designs and specifically this background (Model Airport Background #5 | Airport Diorama Designs) I've been able to create one. Its not perfect and I had to modify it to remove modern aspects like the dome, some buildings and the WN 737, but it will do for now.

I have also got a few building pieces in place which need a lot of work. The building layout is far from finished or accurate but gives you some idea of the configuration. I have also purchased my first Gemini jetways which are well detailed but have needed some mods to get them to fit to my terminals.

Anyway this is how the diorama looks at present. You can see how the parallel parked 707 gates on the left will have dual airbridges for front and rear loading. There are 5 gates which can take 707/DC-8s, 8 for 727s, 3 for large props/small jets and 1 for a DC-3 or One-Eleven.

Thanks everyone. I've been thinking that the aprons are looking too clean so have been experimenting in my limited way (using Paint ) with adding some dirt. I'm not 100% convinced but despite its limitations I think it looks better than leaving the tarmac clean. What do you think? Here are some with and without shots for comparison.

Hi all. In the absence of any comments I decided to go with the fake oil/dirt stains and have reprinted and fixed the foils with the marks in the gate spaces. I also added grass using the same grass image from the background. I was going to use textured model grass but the cost and look of it put me off. Plus at 1:400 the grass would be effectively flat.

I have also added window decals to the right side pier and come a lot closer to having a finished configuration for the terminal building also. Photos will follow but i forgot to bring them to work with me today

Looks good. Sorry I could reply to your question earlier. What I did for my layout to achieve a dirty, weather look was to take a single square from tire skidmarks on sasmd90's runway foil, enlarged it, made it into different shapes, varied the transparency, then layered one upon the other. You can see the results here:

http://www.diecastaircraftforum.com/...rnational.html

I tried putting oil spots in them, but it just didn't work for me. Yours spots look good. For now, I'll stick with what I have and try to work on he spots some other time.

Good luck and I look forward to seeing your terminal!

Cheers. I am now working on adding lighting poles and a viewing area. The viewing area will be atop the pier like the old classic US ones so often were. I've got the fencing going in - just don't have any 1:400 people.

Also having a lot of hassle getting EzToyz to deliver the correct number and type of airbridges!

Quick update - the 1:400 people are on their way so hopefully my viewing area will have some spotters soon whilst the rest of my airbridges have aso arrived. Plus I've been working on the arriving roadway and drop-off area and the road is done and in.

I've also been able to take some of the little stairs off some of the airbridges and use them as stairs down from the pier to gates without airbridges which looks really cool. Hopefully next week there'll be some more photos to post.

Still to do are:

  • Attachment of remaining airbridges
  • Signs for gates and airport name
  • Painting and creating windows for the main terminal
  • Some detailing on the apron

Hi Richard

I look interested in the development of your 1960 1:400 airport! If he is as good as Imogenia, then the world is back in order. And it looks promising!

Hi everyone. I had a day off work yesterday and was able to make some good progress. My 1:400 scale Herpa people arrived and they have been placed around the diorama as spotters on the viewing terrace and groundcrew. They are really tiny so I had to glue them down in the end but I am very happy with their addition.

I have also been working on the lamp posts which I have finalised the design for. Here are a couple of sneak peeks showing progress so far. I still have to add gate numbering and lamp posts to the right side pier.

First we have an Eastern Super Constellation as boarding begins. Passengers move towards the airstairs and are greeted by their captain whilst relations see them off from the viewing terrace:

Here a TWA 707 resplendent in her twin globes colours receives attention from various GSE whilst having taken on her fuel the tanker prepares to leave and passengers move towards the airstairs. Note the stairs coming down from the pier to the ground (taken from some of the gemini airbridges):

The right side pier is now approaching completion with the addition of gate numbering and the first lighting posts (they don't light up). I have modelled the lighting posts on those used at Miami and Chicago in the 1960s - see here for the real things:

Here it is early 1968 just prior to the introduction of American's new livery and a trio of their fleet (L-188, CV-990 and new B727-200) sit at gates 12-14:

I've also been making good progress on the main terminal building which is nearing completion.

I haven't had much time recently to work on Dowse National but I did finish the terminal a few weeks back which really leaves just the left side pier to be finished off. In the interim here are a couple of pics of my recently arrived Stretch Eight in the long title widget scheme at one of the twin jetway gats on the left pier. What a beaut:

Your attention to detail makes this a beautiful retro airport Richard. It's the type of terminal layout I always wanted and maybe someday, I'll buckle down and start one. I saved your Imogenia site for reference along with this thread. Look forward to your completion.

Great job and I know it will be awhile before I get to the point of attempting a diorama but

I really do not care for the dirty tarmac as it is right now as it looks grainy.

Maybe it`s just the pics.

It looks like you have an infestation.

Otherwise it`s brilliant.
